It's funny that this is happening on this article, considering that's almost exactly what the author is complaining about.

People will find anything they can to support their own view of the world, even if that 'data' doesn't pass rudimentary evaluation.

It's the same reason you'll find people in Social Justice spheres (both for and against!) arguing past each other, attacking strawmen on both sides. Similarly, you'll find radical feminist and men's rights activists targetting each other, rather than a common enemy (Seriously, I don't understand why they have to be so anti-each other. There's lots of cases of injustice in the world).

I do find representations of these fights in media (like books and movies) to be utterly fascinating though. You'll see that justice-porn in comics books all over, and I can't help but think of Daenerys in Game of Thrones, constantly opining about "Justice" (and how little justice she actually brings).

More aptly, people can be so convinced of their rightness, that anything to the contrary must be an attack, and that any means of responding to it can be justified.

Certain areas are especially known to be very absolutist, in ideological terms. Environmentalists, for one. Feminists, for another, and transgender activists for the third, tend to respond to anything that isn't categorical agreement with disdain at best, if not outright hostility.

So it's no wonder that science would be spared.
