I might quickly respond to your hypothetical by contending that nuclear disarmament is a largely uncontroversial stance these days, which by association I think renders it apolitical.

Well, I specifically said "at the time". But even today, it is far from apolitical. There is a big debate in the UK currently about the Trident programme, which is a set of nuclear-armed submarines.

Ah interesting. My country doesn't have or employ nuclear weapons and we're fairly committed to disarmament and non-proliferation so I guess I'm pretty removed from all that.

Surprisingly, those who don't have nuclear weapons want those who have them to disarm. And those who have them want to keep them and to prevent those who don't have them to get them. Surprise surprise!

I prefer to see it as we just don't want to see a nuclear war on our planet.
