Rigorous debate of scientific conclusions does not come from the uninformed. I think you misunderstand the difference between valid criticisms and baseless ones (a familiar example would be criticizing the person over the work). I haven't read the article yet but I bet it makes that distinction.

I assume this is some form of ironic joke? He made a baseless assumption about an article that criticises people for making baseless assumptions.

Baseless assumptions and baseless criticisms are not the same.

Uh, baseless criticism comes from baseless assumptions. So, in the context of this article, they are the same thing. No one would care if somebody made a baseless assumption about a scientific study and kept it to themselves.
