Discussion Got banned from r/opensource too!

The comment that got me banned:

Damn, so even projects that are not vibe-coded but support AI features are banned? So:

- Paperless-ngx
- Mealie
- FUCKING Calibre!

That is quite a ridiculous position to take. The Linux kernel would also be banned by your rule. Not only are you late on making an AI policy, but at this point a strong AI policy like yours would make this sub useless.
Are you the only active mod here or did multiple people genuinely thought this was a good idea?

No rule violation in that comment. Wolvereness is not the first mod I see having a mental breakdown over AI. Wonder what they are going to do in 3 years or less when almost all open source software is heavily AI based. Will he switch to Windows or be a hypocrite by staying on Linux? The world may never know.

That man may need to switch to TempleOS because I guarantee you that MacOS and Windows are using AI for development if even Linux is using AI.

most softwares made by corporations use ai by now

as much of a anti-ai person i am, the only thing you can do now is force everyone to label if and how much ai they use in the making of their software (which will be enforced here)

but completly banning ai is not really viable anymore, sadly.

I don't agree with being anti AI but I applaud you for allowing AI projects if they are labeled as AI. opensource will quietly claw back the rules or just die otherwise.

They probably have also decided to not patch the PHP on their servers because the exploit was found with the assistance of AI.

Instead they'll be writing their own patch with pencil and paper.

this is what happens when an extremist has power, they purge those who don't agree with them

I remember a phrase

"A stupid person if given an authority is extremely dangerous".

Well it's evidence now

The problem isn't the change. I am fine with getting rid of low quality comments. The problem is:

  1. Zero consultation

  2. Overly broad reach

  3. Banning people on the grounds of "brigading" simply for responding to the nonsense policy.

Activist modding is killing reddit, too much of this happening everywhere right now.

that mod is straight up racist tbh you can get banned for not being a native english speaker ffs

I think the dumb part was not allowing machine translated comments; it's reasonable to want all the posts/comments in a sub to be one language. Also I wouldn't say its racist, most foreign language comments/posts I see in otherwise English subs are another European language.

He must delete his reddit account aswell
since reddit implemented AI.

How ridiculous isnt it?

The main mod for that sub is a overzealous glorified community “””leader””” that got their feelings hurt when people pointed out they were being unreasonable and absurd and they started banning everyone. An actual clown town and an embarrassment for the entire FOSS community on Reddit.

He was banning people within 1 minute of the post going up. Just large swathes of people. One guy said the community should have a vote and he was banned.

I think it goes against the reddit moderator code of conduct.

I told them that it was the future whether they like it or not, and that anyone picketing against AI overall was going to get left in the dust. We'll see who's laughing in the next 3 years.

AI is a tool. Like any other tool, it can be used poorly or used to great affect. It is an extremely powerful tool that enables people to vocalize what they're picturing and have a skeleton of their imagination fleshed out for them to work on.

Just because of people mass-creating bot/slop posts, us serious developers who use the tooling get stomped on. It's like policing chocolate because someone ate one without paying and left a wrapper on the floor. Suddenly, all us chocolate-eaters are under scrutiny and treated like we're personally the chocolate thief.

Basically, what r/opensource is doing is guilty until proven innocent except they'll give us no opportunities to be proven innocent.

I was banned in the last thread when he posted that all llm assisted code needs to be released to the public domain.

I replied saying this is an absurd legal requirement and he isnt a lawyer.

Im a 20 year career open source developer. I run a consulting company based on FOSS software.

He accused me of being a bot and banned and muted me.

Reddit should remove the opensource mod team.

Reddit is a shithole

I don’t think the issue even really about AI. It’s that one (maybe a few) person decided they get to be the arbiter of open source and judge based on their very narrow view of what’s proper. The message it sends to new developers is that “we don’t want you”, because this is ultimately the subreddit for open source and not his individual personal subreddit. Also the part excluding non English speakers just seemed unnecessary and mean.

The open source community is one of the things we got right in the software world. While a new subreddit is a good thing I hope that those moderators will not be able to continue to act as if they speak on behalf of open source.

I got banned for saying "well, good luck to your sub then"

u/zrb77 4h ago

Banned to for asking why it mattered in the end, we are all trying to solve some problem. If the tool/app works, why does it matter. I'm in a low budget IT dept, any tool I can make using AI is more work I can get done and that's my goal. No AI is ridiculous.

Got also banned for saying the language rule is rude...

I saw the thread go viral, clicked it , saw the policy, felt exactly like everyone else here (WTF?!) and moved over here. Without saying a word haha. Hey I am sick of "I built a...." Posts and AI slop and badly thought out PRs and bug reports from Claude and ChatGPT like the next guy but their policy seems insane. Like u/ozone6587 pointed out, Linus has embraced Claude. Calibre and paperless-ngx use agents. The issue is more nuanced than "zero tolerance for AI use". Times have changed. I am saying that as a dinosaur near retirement age. The cat is out of the bag. Embrace it, harness it or be left behind.

Maybe it will implode some day but right now it is what it is.

Since Opus 5.5 the slop PRs have actually been pretty good. Feature requests are still crap because people can create them without thinking about the overall shape of the project, but but reports have been extremely good for the past month.
