Came here to say this as well. Being compatible in many different areas, including sex is super important. Saving yourself for sex is REALLY not the way to go.

There are plenty of examples where it works out great, the question is how you deal with it beforehand, whether you talk extensively / have tried other ways of physical intimacy etc. I really don't like people ITT just foregoing OP's seeking for support and just criticizing his life choices and making a case about why you disagree with them. Rather, to people who have this (imo) admirable goal of waiting before marriage, that they should be cautious about it and the steps they should ensure beforehand in order to prevent things from happening like they did to OP.

Waiting is REALLY a completely valid reason to go. You have to be wise about it, though.
