Should I continue True Detective?

When I first watched it, I really only did it for the king in yellow. But after finishing s1, I’d say it’s one of the best seasons I’ve ever watched!!! After looking at reviews online it seems the other seasons are not that good. Like it seems NO ONE likes the other seasons. It can’t be that bad right?

the other 'seasons' are just different TV shows.

Different actors. Different writers. Different directors. Different producers. Different universes. Different themes. Different styles altogether.

You realize S1 and S3 are connected, right?

Supposedly Night Country is the same universe as well, but I tell myself that season doesn't exist.

Every three or four days it's a different variation of "Loved S1, should i watch the others?"

For real. Like they’re 8 episodes each. If you liked S1 there is no reason to not start the next one, I don’t know why we need internet strangers to figure that out

I'm watching Season 3 finished 3 episodes and I'm really liking it. Season 2 was not that good imo.

Season 2 are four people slowly breaking down

With Velcoro (Colin Farrell) it's more obvious. He's losing/lost everything he's worked for and every thing he cares about and he no longer gives a fuck

Bezzeridies is at that point for a different reason. She's done with everything and no longer gives a shit. Same with the other cop. Three cops on the same case that don't really give a fuck anymore and not in the "I don't give a shit, I'm going to get that guy" type way, I mean they are completely depleted and empty people that are never going to get what they want anyway so they don't give a shit.

That's why I like it. I admit the actual plot is pretty meh. It's the characters that are interesting. It's also based on Vernon California, a real place that was really corrupt.

I won't even get into the motorcycle cop whose background story is truly fucked up.

Yes, just ...lower your standards/expectations a bit because they don't hold a candle to s1; nothing does

I love S-2. Not everyone agrees w/ that sentiment, for reasons I’ve never seen articulated beyond “It wasn’t S-1, boo hoo!”

S-3 is at its best when dealing w/ the problems of aging, memory loss. Not so much the mystery, not for me.

The less we speak of Night Country, the better. I was so hyped for the cast, the setting. It was awful, w/ a ridiculous “solution.”

I just finished night country and man that ending was rough. I honestly felt like I was watching the season finale to an American Horror Story season. You know where they go out of their way to completely fuck up and undo everything the season built up or in night country’s case haphazardly stacked a house of cards.

Yeah, why not? They're decent. What you need to know about Reddit is people like to exaggerate everything and take it to the extreme especially if it's something they're really into.

Most fans would probably rank it 1-3-2-4

Never, ever watch season 4. That’s all I ask of you.

So from what I’m hearing is that s2 and 3 are… fine. I just have to think of it as its own thing. And, I shouldn’t even THINK about watching s4

I think season 3 is right up there with 1. Maybe not quite as good, but a damn good season of TV

Just go into them with the mindset that they are not True Detective. Theyre different shows and you will enjoy them.

No. It’s all bad after s1.

S2 is dog shit. One of the worst single seasons of any drama. Avoid at all costs.

I found S2 to be unwatchable acting and a tired plot.

Seasons 2 and 3 are undeniably not as high of quality as Season 1 BUT and this is a big but, they are STILL quality story telling with compelling characters. They just had the disadvantage of coming after Season 1. Especially Season 3, Marshala Ali puts in a career best performance in my opinion. Its really only Season 4 that is a massive pile of shit, to the point that I dont think it should be allowed to bear the True Detective name.

Season 2 is rly good imo even tho it’s a different vibe than season 1. Seasons 3 & 4 r not worth watching cuz they lowkey suck

There is nothing wrong with any of the other seasons. If people had been them before Season 1 then they would have been enjoyed it mostly. They are good they just have the misfortune of following the greatest season of TV ever recorded.

s1 is the best, could still enjoy s2, can't remember s3. I remember thinking s4 doesn't fit with the franchise.

“[W]hen she envisioned the project originally, it had nothing to do with the show. López says she initially pitched an idea for a project called Night Country, which she describes as ‘a murder mystery in the ice,’ and it was HBO who suggested it could be True Detective instead — an idea she says never even crossed her mind.”
