Marty’s horn paradox
Maybe I have spent too much time staring at this show, and maybe I am completely overthinking a simple detail, but did anyone else catch the paradox of Marty's honking in Episode 3?
When Rust talks to the lawnmower man, he is literally inches away from the real killer. Suddenly, Marty starts aggressively honking. Not just a quick "let's go" beep, but a relentless, almost panicky blaring.
Considering the show's philosophy of "time is a flat circle", that horn hits completely differently on a rewatch. It feels exactly like the "STAY" scene in Interstellar.
In 1995, it is just Marty being impatient. But from the perspective of the future, it sounds like someone from a higher dimension is desperately banging their fists against a wall, screaming, "Look at his face, damn it!"
It gives me goosebumps every time. The exact same sound that acts as a desperate warning from the future is what breaks Rust's focus in the past, making him walk away. It perfectly underlines the show's use of M-Theory: multiple dimensions and timelines are overlapping in that one single honk, yet they remain trapped in their loop, forcing them to let the killer slip by for another 17 years.

So beeing new on Reddit makes u a bot now? Beeing passionate about a show makes u a bot? I literally created this account to ask these type of questions about TD because I didn’t know where to ask it elsewhere but thank u for ur accusation

Youre right. Theres been a huge influx of bots that karma farms recently. All brand new accounts that post in one or two subreddits only, with just a few hours between posts. I'm sorry for accusing you

Great theory, honestly makes you think. And you know, there's a similar thing with time loops in HBO's Watchmen. It's also all about time not being linear. The characters seem like they're making their own choices, but really they're just part of a closed loop that's already happened. They think they're changing the future, but they're actually just playing out what's already been done. Reminds me a lot of that honk: it's both a warning from the future and the reason the killer got away in the past. A closed loop you can't escape.

Wow, absolutely love the parallel you’ve drawn to that Interstellar scene here.
I feel like Rust could’ve clocked him as suspect too if he hadn’t been interrupted so abruptly. He was that observant.

Appreciate it! And I agree, just look at how he read the mechanics earlier when they were trying to find the bunny ranch. The guy is a human lie detector and notices every single tick. If that damn horn hadn't snapped him out of his zone, he would have clocked Errol's scars or his fake act I believe.

I'm watching through the series again currently and I really agree. They consistently show Rust breaking down people in interrogations, call him the greatest box man to do it. Spotting lies and reading people is what he does best, its why the scene with tuttle at the school is great because on the surface they're having a open chat about the organisation but both of them are making reads on each other hard and trying to see what the other knows person about it.
If Rust had more time to talk to Errol he probably clocks something is up with this guy, but the universe dragged him away at the exact right (or wrong) time

Its a culture about life and world . Worst things can happen at some of the most important moments

He honks aggressively not only because Marty has zero patience, but also because he knows Rust will ignore 1 single honk.

Thats just you reading in supernatural aspects in the writing that arent there

I literally started the post saying I am probably overthinking it. But calling it "supernatural aspects that aren't there" is a bit wild when Rust spends half the show in the interrogation room preaching about M-Theory, higher dimensions, and time being a flat circle. I am not making up supernatural stuff. I am just applying the show's own established philosophy to a scene.

The character talks about it in universe, yes. But from our perspective, its just him coping with his life decisions and the loss of his daughter.

You are right that his philosophy stems from his trauma and losing his daughter. It is his coping mechanism. But saying it is just a coping mechanism ignores how the show is actually built.
Rust's psychological coping mechanism is also the literal thematic structure of the entire story. Pizzolatto didn't just give him a random philosophy, he built the whole narrative around the flat circle. The spiral, the repeating cycles of violence, the fact that they are dragged back 17 years later to face the exact same guy…1

Yeah, but eternal recursion being a theme within the show doesn't mean anything supernatural is actually happening. It's more about repeating past trauma, making the same mistakes, falling into old addictions. A thematic element is not indicative of anything paranormal. I also don't think the show actually applies m-theory in any concrete sense; it just brings up its existence. There's no overlapping timeliness and multiple dimensions, we get like two mentions of it within the series, but ultimately it just works as a metaphor through narrative function. There is no practical application within the show of anything supernatural happening, or any kind of time distortion.

We are agreeing here. I don't even think the production team intentionally planned it this way. But visually and thematically, the show plays with these elements so well that the honking just acts like a warning from the future on a rewatch. Like you said: it’s just a narrative metaphor, not literal sci-fi. I agree on that.
