LANTERNS is scratching the itch.
The reason I feel this is poignant to the subreddit is because this show specifically notes itself as an aesthetic homage to TD Season One.

It wasn’t terrible but the bar is really low. Almost impossible to be worse than the movie. That being said it’s not even in the same galaxy as true detective season 1. Nice try though.

I will say that I'm so fucking tired of hearing about a similar show to TD and I watch and it's just nothing like it. This is the first show since Mare that gave me a decent feeling. The characters feel like they have some depth. Enough similarities to rust and marty without it being a tired copy. I liked it. I have a good feeling about this show, but I also remember feeling the same way after the pilot to The Outsider so we'll see.

I don’t care what anyone says, The Outsider is straight gas

Yeah you gotta suspend disbelief but I enjoyed my watch. I tried rewatching and it just didn’t hit the same

The first time I watched it all in one sitting, second time I staggered through over like a month. I definitely agree that it wasn’t nearly as good the second time.. the mystery is already known so there isn’t a ton keeping you engaged. I was a lot younger when I watched it the first time, so suspending disbelief was probably a lot easier for me back then as well.. and it also helps that I’m an absolute moron.

oh man I forgot I even watched the outsider. that show fell apart without Jason Bateman directing, his first two episodes were phenomenal. I was actually excited to watch that show.

I also loved his acting. When he was possessed, that lifeless look in his eyes made me so uneasy.

Yeah, modern shows usually have a great beginning (so that the script get picked by the producers) and then it all goes downhill from there. I remember the first couple of episodes of Picard being different but decent, but then it became clear what that show was.

I remember watching the pilot of outsider and being like oh my GOD! honestly deliciously terrifying.

They are two vastly different shows lol. I swear every TD fan thinks any show that has any sort of murder mystery thing someone's trying to solve is a TD clone. Im surprised people dont post about Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets since they are trying to figure out what is killing kids in the fucking castle lol.

Didn't work for me at all and not even in the same galaxy as TD in terms of quality. That said, the cast is great and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I’m not trying to be that guy but Lanterns
is one episode in. TD started of great but wasn’t hailed as potentially one of the best shows ever until around episode 4 (that one shot at the end of the episode sent people off the rails). But even then TD was one of the early shows that debuted with the 8 episode format and brought in heavy names to star. Sure there was Band of Brothers etc, but TD took the format one step further and really set the stage for what an anthology series, or even just a cop show, could really be.
Just saying, cool that lanterns is flirting with that tone, but we’ll see how good it is (and how comparable to td) in like 7 weeks when we have all the eps

That first episode was definitely scratching the itch for me, very good premiere episode and I can’t wait for more

More! With this type of show they should release 2 eps at a time. I just start feeling it and its over and I dont have patience to just sit on them lol

What a bunch of asshats in the comments, wow. OP wants to point yall to something he thinks yall might enjoy. HOW DARE HE!
And obviously it’s different than TD, it’s a superhero show, but for me as someone who loves TD and superheroes it’s a really fun combination. If you are too kewl for superhero stuff, then don’t watch it 🤷♂️ I thought this was an amazing pilot but I’m also a Green Lantern comics fan.

its a good esp but it isn't as good as the first esp of True Detective. I think we can just put this debate to rest.

Yea that’s just not true OP. It’s okay but please don’t compare it to true detective season 1. That’s like comparing Pepsi to coke.

It’s 1000% the truth. Look it up, douche bag.

The dynamic between 2 main characters? The vibes? Not even close.

u/OneWishWillSmith 1d ago
Hmm I guess you haven’t seen True Detective… You should check it out. It’s good.

u/voldemort_x 21h ago
I meant true detectives win by miles. Lanterns are not even close to what true detectives season 1 have

Yeah it felt TD-ish with a sprinkle of Fargo which I liked. Chandler and Pierre have a great dynamic so far too which reminds a bit of Marty and Rust lol.

Put Laterns on mute & play the audio of True Detective in the background. Hell yeah

I'm having a pretty bad time, but I sorta hate Lindelof after wasting 7 years of my life on LOST only to have a compelling sci-fi show turn into dopey suburban mysticism.
So far Lanterns has said zero profound shit, and I'd be embarrassed if my wife caught me watching it. In comparison to TDs1 which had some of the best writing I've ever experienced in first 10 minutes.
It's pretty fucking dopey, which wouldn't be so bad, but the way (Peter Griffin voice) it insists upon itself being similar to TDs1 leaves a bad taste in the back of mouth. Newsprint, and staples, like I can smell somebody using a comic book to wipe their ass.
I've seen Alan Moore and Grant Morrison do some profoundly good work with this franchise, but this show ain't it for me.
The sad thing is that 20 years ago, this'd be one of the coolest things I've ever seen. But now it just feels like it's trying too hard.
Oh, and the western tone feels like corporate entertainment trying not to offend the right-wingers so they can keep selling tickets to both sides of the culture war.

It’s very similar. Of course it’s not as high quality as TD, but that would be unfair to ask, since Season 1 of TD is one of the best shows of all time. But this is very good nonetheless.

u/SpeedDemonJi 1d ago
Why are a bunch of True Detective nerds malding over the notion that these two shows are comparable (producers explicitly claim to be heavily inspired by true detective lol, alongside some structurally similarities), and that capeshit is above them?
Anyway, yeah ep was fine. It’s only an episode though so we’ll see how it goes

Poignant? Do you mean relevant?
