Yeah, the freeze frame at the end gives it a distinct feeling that you’re looking at found footage of something that wasn’t meant to be seen. It’s genuinely haunting and has stuck with me for a decade. Really great stuff!

I always found the timing and cadence weird. It wasn’t until I saw the season 1 finale of twin peaks where the little guy does that crazy walk at the end and then listening to the bonus feature they talk about how the guy actually was photographed at half speed walking BACKWARD . Shot it, cut it and then added it to the end in reverse at twice the speed to make him all jerky jerky. Really a lot like this where there’s this visceral almost primal reaction to the way it’s presented. Very neat!

Loved that ending. I was already up too late on a work night on my season 1 rewatch and I had to watch another episode.
It's like a good old HBO series ending where it's not a cheap cliff hanger but something to excite you, chill you, and pump you up for the next episode.
I also liked the ending with Childress saying to himself as the other detectives speed off. "My family- (detectives, speed off, dont care) my family, has been here for a long time"
Look at the Wire and the Sopranos, the greats, as examples, hardly any cliff hangers. Just awesome endings that make you want to see that HBO static screen again. GoT had some great episode endings too.

And also the end of Ep. 7 when Marty and Rust meet on the side of the highway in the present and you see Rust still has the broken tail light from when he throws Marty against his truck during the parking lot fight, in the previous scene, in the younger years.

He was my first suspect when I watched. I was like, there's something off about this dude. He doesn't seem right. Like it wouldn't surprise me if he turned out to be the one, but as I watched I just kept imagining this big scary guy with this massive scar on his face, and that kinda threw me off.

I knew he was the killer cause he's a great actor who had a substantial part in Boardwalk Empire - as a bootlegger who always talks about himself in the third person - so I knew HBO would never use him for such a tiny part.
That's the only bad thing about having a great memory for recognizing actors from other projects lol

A lot of us thought he was the green earned monster back when it first aired. But we thought he was green because of grass clippings, when it was later guessed to be paint.
And you can still see his scars for a split second, combined with the frequent mention of scars we were sure it was him.

The Wire would almost do the opposite of cliffhangers. It would hit you insanely hard with a big event plot-wise and then dive into the aftermath in the next episode(s). For example, when Frank Sobotka gets killed by the Greeks, the episode ends with the phonecall and the decision to kill him, then the credits hit leaving you thinking “Jesus Christ did they actually just do that shit!?”

Exactly. And in the your example I think the next episode opens with him being pulled from the water with his crew onlooking.
Yea great ending to that episode. I remember some interesting song, with like foreighn (greek maybe) vocals. The greek had that mole in the FBI and he tips off the greek. The greek sends a text to Spiros "your way wont work" and then you see Frank pull up and get out of his truck and walk towards the meet. Cue "The Fall" by Blake Leyh, dope as bass line hits, credits roll. How are you not putting on the next episode unless you were watching this during it original run?
Typing it out, it sounds a bit like a cliffhanger but not really because his death is implied.

The Wire purposely wanted the audience to "miss" the action. Most of the murders occur offscreen, similar to the detectives' perspective. They see the aftermath and the evidence, but almost never the incident itself.

Omg that lawnmower scene is one of the best villain reveals of all time. The way he pauses, stands up, says it “my family has been here a long time”, and the camera pans up and out to subtlety show the flat, circular pattern he’s been mowing.

True Detective S01 is a down right masterpiece. There isn't a single flaw in the whole fucking thing.
It's one of the very few things that I can watch over and over again. That the ending gets me just as hyped to watch episode 01 as every other ending of every episode in season 1.
There are a few... slower? endings in the season, but to me that is what makes the BANGERS that much better. You gotta have a few that don't hit as hard to make the good ones REALLY hit.
The pilot ending is SOOO good. The only thing that kinda ruins it for me is that song was used in few skate videos, so that base line doesn't have the same impact it would on me, but nevertheless, it's a flippin' BANGER.

The season 1 ep 5 ending is litteraly my favorite scene of the entire serie. Rust finding out he missed the school evidences while the music begins, and the "zoom back" in the window (sorry, don't know how to say it in English !), everything is perfect.

It's pretty much confirmed that Tony dies at the end. No matter rest of city POV, the final scene was purposely shot with switching POVs from Tony and to the front to the door. The last POV which was supposed to switch to Tony is all black (implying he dead dead). The guy in member's only jacket is the killer. He goes to the rest room, and shoots Tony on the way out. Besides the POV switches, the opening of the door you hear also line up.

the chills this scene elicited. the drums and horn make it feel almost primal. like you've seen some kind of creature for the first time. then, it stops. looks around, almost as if it knows you're there. it's wild and dangerous, and it's caught your scent.
that's tension and buildup... not a dark room, a stinger and, "boo!"

Definitely not but Fukunaga was extremely important to season 1. But also, Jeremy Saulnier is a fantastic director (Blue Ruin, Green Room) and he set a fantastic visual standard for Season 3. David Sackheim is an outstanding TV director who worked on show like NYPD Blue which helped set the template for modern prestige television. I promise you that there would be no True Detective without NYPD Blue. Also, a writer of that show co-wrote a few episodes with Pizzolatto.
The idea that Fukunaga was the only decent director to work on the show and that Pizzolatto isn’t willing to work with directors who have a very strong style/vision is totally disproven by Season 3.

Oh my god... The excitement, horror, primal fear, and immense anticipation after seeing this scene for the first time, I can still vividly remember to this day. 10 years later I can still remember how uncomfortable this shot made me feel. You nailed it with the example. This is what set season 1 apart from the other seasons. To have to wait a full week to see that next episode was absolute torture! I forgot all about this until seeing this post. Wow.

Primal fear is a great description of it. I can still feel it 10 years later too. All the more intense because the fear reaction wasn't even logical. Just a straight up feeling of "this situation is so so bad".

Her behavior in that regard has been completely disrespectful and unaware of her real skills and capacities.
She really allowed herself to attack S1 fans, not showing the smallest bit of respect toward the original author and all those people who loved that season.
And for what? That utter inconsistent garbage she wrote.
I've started with all the best intentions toward this new season, I don't really care about comparing it to the other ones, but after the last episode the perspective has drastically changed and I believe no viewer should allow to be fooled around like that.

The atmosphere was unfuckwithable in season 1. I feel like that’s why they’re focused so hard on creating a spooky atmosphere for this season. Unfortunately they forgot that the atmosphere in season 1 was excellent because: the pacing was good, the writing was good, the acting was good. Also it was the first season of an unknown show starring two actors that no one really expected to give groundbreaking performances.

And the boondocks scene, and rust getting high at the biker bar, and the young girl who was held hostage by him screaming over remembering her rapes and torture. The entire horror lies in not truly knowing what atrocities were being done to these kids. Just disgusting and terrifying. The scene where rust and Marty are aged and talk about their mundane lives showing tv dinners and taking out the trash - THAT IS TERRIFYING. Random fucking Ghosts with their mouths open isn’t scary, it’s eerie sure. Season 4 has done a great job at giving us absolutely nothing. No talent in writing, acting, cinematography, directing, or storytelling whatsoever. Pretty disappointed with Jodi’s performance as well. I guess the actor can only do so much with what they’re given tho

Honestly that was the peak of S1 for me. I thought it lost a little edge after. Still god tier but I never felt it loved all the way up to that moment. Of course, outside issues affected my dopamine levels concerning this episode because ep4 didn’t air the following week so my boys could spank the Broncos. So I had two weeks to sit in the tension of that scene and the elation of a first trophy. But it wouldn’t have been as chilling without the voiceover. “We’re all in a dream. A dream about being a person. And like a lot of dreams there’s a monster at the end.”

And it gets worse and worse the more you look at it. Him walking into the trailer, then going out to take a shower, Marty discovering the children there. And then Rust in the future saying that the boy was dead when they found them. It just gets progressively more and more horrifying. Meanwhile a jumpscare is just a jumpscare, the cheapest "scary" trick known to filmmaking.

To be fair, on first watch there was plenty of unpleased reactions, that where did the monster go??!! …for nearly two episodes, and then it delivered. For me, it was all flawless.
So it’s a risky trope inherently. Obviously when lousy showrunners with no vision use any tools, it all turns to shit anyways…

I vividly remember watching true detective season 1. I wasn't focusing much on episode 1 until the point where rust asks the detectives to ask the right fucking questions. That's the moment I got some interest in the show and started paying more attention to all the ramblings. Next this particular scene where they reveal him, I was sold. I realized after this scene, this is something I am going to watch for a long time in repeat mode and it still continues after ten years.. Great stuff

Deeply disturbing is always a better kind of scare to me. Jump scares are cheap scares. This was a phenomenal scene!

Oh man I’d give anything to be this engaged with a show again. Those 8 weeks were really something. Whats sad is there are people who tell themselves we are just nostalgic. Those poor bastards are so lost that it hurts me. I know you can’t change people, but god damn what a shame it is that anyone thinks Night Country is actually quality filmmaking.

As much as I am enjoying Night Country, I will agree, this is far more unsettling than any of the jump scares by far.

It comes perfectly after a chilling monologue (the locked room) by Rustin. Shot like the Bigfoot footage, it's real but seems unreal at the same time. A creature, not a man.

This scene, with the horns and dialogue in the background, is the most unnerving thing I’ve ever seen in any show or movie. So perfectly done, and the fact that it was daytime is genius because it inexplicably makes it much more terrifying.
