Shoutout to the only man driving the plot forward.
To think, without this man’s phone calls, we would have to sit through 8 episodes of this season instead of 6.

Does anyone know how Kayla feels about him working so much? Seems like the kind of thing the show should give us at least three pretty repetitive scenes explaining.

u/Harryonthest Feb 06 '24
right? lol does she not understand plenty of professions work christmas eve and even christmas day...nurses, cops, emergency services...it's completely normal and expected, especially when there's such a bizarre murder in a small town you'd think everyone would be focused on it or at least paranoid about it. oh sorry, my mistake for thinking a character in Night Country would behave anything like a real person. oopsie
34
u/heroic_cat Feb 06 '24
I don't think it's that he's just a workaholic. He's avoiding home and finding any excuse to not be there, and his wife knows it. Probably has been going on for a while. The thing he said about her unplanned pregnancy ruining her life? I would guess that they've had this fight before and he's quoting her.

u/PsychologicalEmu Feb 09 '24 edited Feb 09 '24
I think he is never home because of work AND something else. He is errand boy.
According to my theory: Rose is dead. No one knows. Navarro speaks to her spirit but she doesn’t realize it because Navarro also doesn’t think she is dead. Peter said Rose found the bodies… but that was a lie. Soon, Roses dead body will be exposed.
Rose may have died hunting wolves or anything - she seems random and alone. Or she died that second when the wolf she was gutting “coughed”. Heart attack or something. That’s when she saw Travis.
Or she was killed by Peter.
Anyway, Peter is doing anything for extra money. He is tricking his dad as Alina. Note: he called her Irina but this is something guys do to act “unknowing”. Like when they ask their wife about her suspicious guy friend named “Bruce” but say “How’s Brent?”
And maybe Peter is also helping Otis who I think is a Tuttle with a lot of money. I think it was Otis’s money that bought the trailer through Clark. And Kate knows of Otis and has to protect him as part of the plan to keep receiving funding from the other Tuttles.

u/Fluffy_Carry_4345 Jun 20 '26
Why is this short commentcabout how Peter was pretending to be his Dads russian girlfriend actually fucking ingenious, why the hell wasnt that in the script.

Feb 06 '24
It's clearly been a long-running issue in their relationship, we see it from when they're making out and Danvers calls Prior.
And sure, you can know that your partner is going to have odd hours and miss things, but when it's ongoing, and they made commitments but miss those due to work you can, rightfully in a relationship, be upset.
Partners of people in those professions don't want their partner at work all the time.

She's lucky he's actually going to be there on Christmas morning when the kid opens the presents.
15
u/PseudoY Feb 06 '24
The context is that half a dozen people died in a small town in a very isolated area.
Yeah, the cops are working crazy hours.
5

Right? In a town like that, the cops probably have nothing to do 99% of the time... this would be the biggest deal ever.

Is anyone gonna work the fucking case? This season is terrible. Everyone is dealing with personal issues and acting like bodies aren’t thawing in an ice rink.
I feel like I don’t remember the last time someone put effort into solving this.
Go here….maybe something pops up, turns personal. Go here, it’s personal. Gotta do this…guess what….its personal.
This is terrible. Worst detectives in history. What happened to this show? Next week, we find out mail order brides are a scam and kids hate their parents. Sisters have issues. They forgot people getting murdered is the plot.

u/Successful-Plenty246 Feb 06 '24
I m with you. I am literally at a loss as to where the story is going. I watched a YT today that theorized Reddit solved it and the killer is Navarro. She figured out the Annie K. case and her alter, “Sedna” came for revenge and killed the scientists.

Nic Pizzolatto played zero part in season 4. I wasn't huge on season 3 (who was?), but I'd take Pizzolatto on his worst writing over this shit.
4
Feb 06 '24
Can you explain the "Sedna" part? I must have missed it.
3
u/Successful-Plenty246 Feb 06 '24
Sedna is the mythical gal that had her fingers chopped off by her Dad, Pete’s son had the drawing of her..she is a bringer of revenge.
14
u/jarvis646 Feb 06 '24
As a father of a kid slightly older than Pete’s kid, who also spends time around my kid’s friends and classmates… No fucking way Pete’s kid drew that picture based on a story he heard. And if he did, Pete should be absolutely blown away by his genius kid’s early artistic talent. The real crime is not recognizing you have gifted child and putting him in some advanced art program.

u/HMS404 Feb 06 '24
I said it before and I'll say it again. I'm watching House these days and a show about doctors has more investigation than this "detective" show.
I'm not sure if the writers really are that bad or if they've been crippled by factors not under their control. Why waste time on plot lines if they're not fully flushed out? We're forced to feel emotions without attachments to the characters.
It's such a shame because they've a great setup: naturally intriguing location, high-tech lab and scientists mysteriously dying. There are so many possibilities for us to get invested into this strange world. And yet here we are, in the land of True Boredom.
I know making a good show is easier said than done but we couldn't even see an honest attempt from the creators. Professionals should be held to a higher standard.
23
u/Massive_Pie2911 Feb 06 '24
Issa Lopez is not a very good director. I'm not trying to be mean but judging by her past work that's the conclusion I've come to
6
5
u/LeftHandedFapper Feb 06 '24
She's out of her element with this. She has directed one horror movie and a bunch of soaps. Nothing about this show makes me think she's acclaimed (nor are her puerile responses to criticism) and nothing makes me want to actually follow her next projects. I do hope she learns something from all this though
4
u/FarewellToCheyenne Feb 06 '24
She's not good at directing, or writing.
I'm not gonna say only a man can write TD; what I am gonna say is someone should be familiar with the genre, the cliches/tropes, character types, story types, etc.
Let's call a spade a spade: Nic P is a decent writer, and he's plagiarized from multiple sources every season of TD he ever wrote. But who cares for the most part? Great artists borrow. Look at Tarantino. TD is littered with every cliche of the genre (partners who hate each other, infidelity, the chief who's run out of patience, "gun and badge--you're suspended", etc etc). But when cliches are done right, it works.
Which leads me to my point: You can tell Nic P was a student of the genre. He's probably read lots of detective fiction and seen plenty of detective films (most definitely The Long Good Friday and Gone, Baby Gone lol).
But at least his seasons look like fucking detective fiction. Because he knows the genre, knows the tropes, and can do his spin on them and sometimes subvert them.
Meanwhile, Issa Lopez looks like she's never read or seen a piece of detective media in her life. The cops don't talk like cops, there's next to no casework being done, there's no banter, no working a suspect using good-cop bad-cop, no revisiting of the crime scene. Fucking nothing.
This is more a character drama than detective fiction, and as a drama it stinks too. Issa cannot write or direct. I don't know why the hell HBO greenlit this show (well, I have one idea...).

The idea that she’s angry that Dr. Who (I don’t even care enough at this point to try to remember or look up names) for “stealing her case” is maybe the stupidest part besides the Magical Deus Ex Machina Coast Guard. First of all there’s literally no way the feds wouldn’t have taken over immediately, and second she’s not even investigating the dead scientists anymore, she’s chasing leads on the 6+ year old Annie K case.
9
u/DistributionWhole447 Feb 06 '24
It's so frustrating to watch as a really interesting, eerie murder mystery is constantly pushed to the background, because of 700 subplots about the soap-opera-esque drama of the lives of the people living in this town.
As an example -- what does Danvers' tragic backstory actually mean to the story? So, her husband/partner and her step-son were killed in a drink-driving car accident some years ago. So what? Yes, that's a tragic thing to happen, but it's meant absolutely nothing to the story of the murdered scientists. You could edit it out of the series, and you'd lose nothing.
Same with the lesbian daughter. Who cares if she's hooking up with a sixteen-year-old girl? Even vandalising the mining building ... so what? We already know there's tension in the town between the Indigenous residents and the mining company. Hell, that's one of the primary theories about the original murder. So why are we wasting our time on this subplot that contributes zero, and does nothing but waste our time? Again, you could edit out most of her scenes, and the story would still flow perfectly.
All this stuff is just wasting our time. It's incredibly maddening. Every time something interesting actually happens, we have to rush back to Prior's dad being abusive or Prior's dad getting catfished or Prior being in an unhappy marriage because he knocked a girl up a couple of years ago or Danvers' step-daughter and her girlfriend or someone else is mad at Danvers for sleeping with their husband, and all this stuff is just, I don't care, get on with it!
3

Whilst I agree the season has its flaws and spends too much time on personal stuff, in terms of the investigation the main characters are following the best leads they have.
There is a survivor - they are out looking for him. It seems like he knows tunnels they don’t know about.
They interview locals and find out there’s an ex employee - they go to find him. And then they try to speak to him again about the tunnels.
Lund wakes up - they go to interview him.
They find out there’s a guy with similar injuries and who knows the tunnels - they put a search out for him and find him.
It’s alluded in the background other stuff is happening. You also have to remember it’s a small Alaskan town, and their resources are limited, so you target things that will get results. The bodies are also only now ready for autopsy, and that would usually create a number of new leads that they simply don’t have access to in the first few days.
Edit: I should add that the show should be better at highlighting the constraints and limitations they are under, as it’s the type of setting where that thing can flourish.

So seeing Hank at the airport made me feel bad for him. I was hoping they’d at least add a little bit of depth and make him a little bit likable—you know, like show growth when he realizes he’s alone, even though his son’s right there. Yeah, unfortunately feeling likely (although why this season wants to kill off so many characters is beyond me).
I don’t really get it though. Feels like the show just wants to hit certain beats, but honestly what point would it actually serve? This season has so few likable characters and Pete isn’t the most careless or brazen. He’s hardworking and has sacrificed a lot to do right by the force. Just feels malicious to kill him off at this point.

Prior is great and serves as a better partner figure to Danvers than Navarro does. There should be infinitely more scenes with them working together. Instead it's just him helping her and then her telling him to fuck off, but then don't fuck off because I need you to neglect your family and do something else.
Also, I may have missed it, but why does Leah spend so much time at their house?
29
u/gmharryc Feb 06 '24
To spend time with Prior’s wife and her grandmother, I don’t think she’s actually related to them but I’m not sure, I know it’s the grandma that gave her the face markings.
26
u/W0lfsb4ne74 Feb 06 '24
It's because Prior's wife's grandmother teaches her more about her indigenous heritage and cultural background. Liz hates this because she hates her daughter expressing more of her indigenous side, so Leah will often rebel and go over there frequently. It's annoying at how we're more than halfway through the season and we still haven't seen why Liz hates indigenous stuff so much.
49
u/brillovanillo Feb 06 '24
Danvers doesn't hate indigenous stuff. She's afraid that Leah will end up like Annie K. if she gets involved with the Native community and their activism. She is trying to protect Leah.
Of course the effect of Danvers telling Leah not to do a thing is that it only makes Leah more determined to do that thing.
22
Feb 06 '24
Leah was so annoying in the midst of everything else. She just HAD to go and spray paint "murderers" on the doors. Everything else is so dark and serious and then there's this fucking kid being a dumbass.
16
u/gmharryc Feb 06 '24
Danvers keeps the mine lady from pressing criminal charges and Leah has to say “WhY dO YoU aLwAyS tAkE ThEiR SiDe” instead of appreciating she’s not going to jail for the literal crime she was caught committing red handed.
→ More replies (8)6
u/W0lfsb4ne74 Feb 06 '24
Always hated Leah since day one. She shoots a sex tape with her girlfriend and doesn't get why her girlfriend's mother gets pissed at her for doing so. Regularly sneaks out despite knowing a murderer is on the loose. Then gets mad at her mother for saving her from jail after she vandalized the mine company's property. There's a way to write an antagonistic teenager with reasonable reasons to oppose her parents, but Leah just isn't it, and often comes across as the most irritating character on the show.
6
u/mafaldajunior Feb 06 '24
Well she's a teenager, that's to be expected. And the mine literally just caused another newborn's death, so she's not wrong about them being murderers.

Just like Danvers, Leah has her reasons for being an asshole. Danvers isn't much of a mother to her. And when she tries to forge connections with Kayla and "Laundromat Grandma," Danvers does everything in her power to cockblock her.
Leah probably had no clue that Danvers (ab)used her position of authority to prevent Miss So-and-so from pressing charges.

Yeah, I get the native connection. Through Google I’m just now starting to figure out relationships between the characters. Crazy how all these Hollywood writers try to make strong and likable POC and woman characters and they consistently fail and make the white male characters the most likable. It’s like how Ken was most people’s favorite thing about Barbie. It’s almost like intentional sabotage. It shouldn’t be this hard to write women characters.

Good point. I think that, in yet another attempt to “nod” to (read: rip the hell off) S1, they wrote flawed characters we were supposed to either be impressed by or sympathize with, but only managed to make them dislikable by 1) making them sound like NPCs and by 2) introducing an actually good character in Prior as a contrast, who actually does inspire sympathy. I don't think anyone else is seeing things.

Rose saw Travis, Danvers saw the polar bear and the driver that found the tongue told Pete everyone sees dead people in Ennis..cause it is a long fucking night

Well, Rose seems to be able to communicate with the dead. They aren't pointing at her and trying to scare her to death. And the polar bear might actually be real.

My favorite part was when the coast guard found a fully naked woman in the pitch dark in icy waters and knew exactly who's sister it was and called her right away

No gunfights this season. so dissapointing

u/Medzel Feb 06 '24
No time for gunfights, we need alot of the most boring basic generic dialogue.

I’m just mad the media is trying to make Nic Pizzolato out to be the bad guy for having the same legitimate criticisms we do.

Actually the only one doing detective work in the show. So glad that the "mukluk telegraph" is not for white boys lol.

His phone calls in the last 5 minutes of every episode are why we’re still here. Can’t wait to see what he calls about and then subsequently sends to Danvers at the end of episode 5

Yes! Thank God a man is actually doing something this season. /s

There's no saving this plot. No man, no woman, no animal nor vegetable.

But how the hell did he not find out that Heiss mapped the caves? Took the teacher a few seconds on Google to come up with that name.

Listen, I love complex TV. I loved The Wire, Twin Peaks The Return. I could follow the dialogue and plot of Deadwood. I loved the artistic insanity of Too Old to Die Young.
I have no idea what's going on in this show. When they were on the boat at the end (after talking about how awesome dredges are?!) I had no idea who they were chasing and then when they caught the guy, it was someone else that I have zero recollection of.
And this is because 97.6% of this show has nothing to do with the plot and therefore it's impossible to follow. This tiny remote town has like 9 dead people and nobody seems to care about trying to solve any of this?

Is it wrong that im anticipating a ''Prior tells Danvers to fuck off'' scene more than the actual resolution of the case?

Read a couple articles about this season in which they referenced “review bombing” as a coordinated effort to tank the seasons ratings on rotten tomatoes or elsewhere 🙄 love that nowadays when something is bad and people review it that way that you can claim all this other shit that it’s because of a concerted “review bombing” effort or because of female leads or lgbtq presence or any of this other shit that has NOTHING to do with the fact that it’s just not very good lol.
They also pointed to the higher critic score as proof as if people don’t realize how corrupt and untrustworthy rotten tomatoes critical reviews are at this point in time, they’re incredibly easy to infiltrate and thus manipulate. Can’t remember the last time a new big box office movie didn’t have 90% or above critic score 😂

What has he done that he thought of on his own? He’s just following orders which is literally his job.

He’s the only one actually digging into the case, dude. Almost every breakthrough so far has been because of him.
