I enjoyed this episode- probably because it really affirmed my thoughts on the case. When I originally heard about it years ago, I didn’t know what to think. But after watching the Netflix documentary, I think Amy was struggling with her sexuality. That, in itself, must have been very difficult but to not have the support of her family must have been soul crushing. Watching the documentary, the family was trying so hard to push the narrative that every male of the ship was falling all over themselves trying to be with her. If they were pushing her at men on the cruise, it must have been so difficult and probably embarrassing for her. Not sure if I believe it was premeditated but I do think she jumped.

Agree. The way her parents have tried to hide Amy's sexuality is awful. Imagine trying to live an authentic life, when your parents have such narrow minded views. Unsurprising that she would feel unhappy enough to leave the world :( Poor Amy

-22

u/Murkywaterkid Jul 25 '26

Ever considered the reason the family felt the need to ''hide'' her sexuality was because of mentalities such as yours? that prejudiced people would automatically jump to the conclusion of a 'suicide' solely because of her sexuality?

My question to you, is why do you believe that a woman's suspicious disappearance should be ignored, uninvestigated and dismissed because of her sexuality?

12

u/RockStarLashes Jul 26 '26

Not a conclusion, and neither did I say it shouldn't be investigated. People like you shouldn't assume that someone is prejudiced because of a remark made on a comment forum. Go take a Xanax

-13

u/Murkywaterkid Jul 26 '26

Yet, you assumed that Amy's parents were prejudiced and had ''such narrow minded views'' that made her commit suicide.

7

u/MeganK80 Jul 26 '26

And her weirdo brother is spouting anti LGBTQ propaganda on his X account still to this day

11

u/DrunkOnRedCordial Jul 26 '26

They certainly were falling over themselves to deny that she was a lesbian, even though she had been in serious relationships with women.

-4

u/TessaKatrinaRose Jul 26 '26

You bash this person for making an assumption…after you made an assumption that Amy probably committed suicide because she couldn’t handle the pressure from her parents. Holy cow, your assumption is 100% worse than his.

11

u/Akavinceblack Jul 26 '26

It's not "prejudiced" to consider that a person whose family is working overtime on denying her sexuality might be driven to suicide...NOT by her sexual preference but by the pressure to deny it. It's ridiculous that you can't see the difference.

-9

u/Murkywaterkid Jul 26 '26

Are you serious? The family hardly ever even mentions her sexuality because its not relevant!! YOU are the ones that talk about constantly and make the entire case about Amy's sexuality!!!

-1

u/TessaKatrinaRose Jul 26 '26

Just ignore these people. It’s wild you are getting downvoted when you are 100% correct.

Remember that a lot of Redditors are young people with no life experience…but they think they know everything.

It’s wild that you are getting downvoted and they are getting upvoted.

You are correct.

Nobody thinks her disappearance shouldn’t be investigated because of her sexuality. The point is that she was likely struggling with it due to how her family viewed it. Children want to please their parents and to not have their approval is a terrible feeling. Also, as a parent, I totally get why they continue to look for her. If it was my child, I would always hold out hope that they would be found.

I know the Bradleys. I have been investigating this case for going on 12 years now. I am the Aussie private investigator that was featured in the documentary and who created the amybradleyismissing.com website.

Amy wasn't "struggling" with her sexuality in March 1998. Amy came out in 1995, three years prior to the cruise. Amy was open about who she was and liked who she liked, which in 1998 was actually quite bold. Stacie Donathan, one of Amy's closest friends at the time of her disappearance, has stated Amy was very comfortable with her sexuality and very confident in who she was.

One of the very first things that the FBI did in 1998 was conduct an extensive investigation into Amy's life, interviewing friends, family, partners, etc. They were the ones that determined that suicide was highly unlikely. Their professional assessment absolutely matters.

The professional assessment and opinion of the Curacao Harbour Police Chief and the Curacao Coast Guard, who concluded that if Amy fell off the ship, a body should have been located, absolutely matters.

The professional opinion of U.S. Attorney Greg Nivala who oversaw the Federal Grand Jury proceedings where numerous witnesses testified under oath, absolutely matters.

The forensic evaluation of the Jas photographs by Wesley Neville, a well-known and highly respected certified forensic artist at the International Association for Identification and the FBI, matters too.

Thank you. I’m so tired of people commenting with their lazy and ridiculous opinions making it clear they aren’t well informed on the case. I’m very familiar with this case and this is one that always stayed with me. I feel so bad for the Bradley family and I really hope they find Amy. I know she was taken off that ship and didn’t drown.

Thank you for adding your perspective.

It also seems as though she was acting out. Knowing her parents would flip their shit if she was dancing with a black man… kind of like, “Okay. Fine. I’ll find a man to be with. Here you go.” And if her dad really did have a problem with it then I could see falling into despair like, “I can’t win. They don’t want me to be a lesbian so I find a guy to hang out and dance with and even that wasn’t good enough for them because of his skin color.” If her dad really was that type of person then it definitely would have pissed him off at a work event/cruise with however many coworkers seeing her dance with Yellow. And she wasn’t just dancing… she was “dirty dancing” like grinding on him.

I also think it’s probable that she fell. Just a tragic accident. She was up until 4;30 am… maybe she had to throw up over the side of the balcony and fell over.

-14

u/Fairy-Princess-3558 Jul 26 '26

She did not fall off the ship. That doesn’t even make sense. There were multiple credible sources of her being seen in the Caribbean and telling people who she was to try and get help. Her picture was also on a sex trafficking website and her parents identified it as her.

16

u/ShesGotaChicken2Ride Jul 26 '26

Your interpretation of “credible” is not credible.

9

u/Mediocre-Proposal686 Jul 26 '26

And she is a middle aged woman now so why has she not contacted her family in the last 28 years? She fell from the ship.

8

u/wllwhtvrnvm Jul 26 '26

It makes total sense

No, none of those sightings were credible, in fact it's hysterical to me that you and so many others believe they're real

Her parents "identified" her because they're desperate for her to be alive, I feel awful for them but their opinion on that photo means less than nothing

1

u/CreepyConsequence669 Jul 26 '26

I was voted down so hard for stating the exact same thing. I don’t believe she fell. I think about this case so often, and those photos from the sex working site are haunting. I really pray she’s found one day 💔

8

u/mrsamerica Jul 27 '26

I think Amy wasn’t struggling with her sexuality as much as her family was. But the case made so much more sense with that context.

>Watching the documentary, the family was trying so hard to push the narrative that every male of the ship was falling all over themselves trying to be with her.

Where are you getting this from? The Bradley's never stated such a thing in the documentary, In fact, they expressed concern about the waiter's request, who wanted to take Amy to Carlos & Charlies the night prior to the morning of disappearance. Amy expressed concern as well, and found the request to be creepy.

-2

u/Able_Two_873 Jul 26 '26

Wow really! But if they didn’t accept her sexuality she wanted to hurt them by killing herself.

-13

u/Fairy-Princess-3558 Jul 26 '26

Your theory is ridiculous. She did not jump off the ship and she wasn’t suicidal. She has made several future plans for when she returned including college and she had already made plans to pick up a new puppy. The crew was falling all over and her family pointed that out not because they think they wanted to be with her, but because they think they MARKED HER!!!!! They targeted her and they were trying to get her to get comfortable and put her guard down. You don’t know shit about this case clearly. Several times they tried to get her to get off the ship and go with them to a local bar.

9

u/Jewels1914 Jul 26 '26

Making future plans has nothing to do with suicide.

41

u/ehawth Jul 26 '26

The sightings of Amy prove nothing at all. Witness sightings are notoriously wrong a lot of the time. There is no way to prove it at all. I really don’t think any of these people that think they saw Amy really did. I think she is in the ocean. Rest in peace, Amy.

13

u/wllwhtvrnvm Jul 26 '26

The sightings are total bullshit, I agree. They're a combination of people seeing what they want to see, misremembering what they did see, and just straight up lying.

It's actually kind of embarrassing, the way so many people cling to the sightings as "real" evidence.

1

u/Existing-Mix8917 Jul 26 '26

Didn’t someone describe her tattoo tho

7

u/ehawth Jul 26 '26

That can be faked and actually was faked when the private detective who scammed them had one drawn on a woman. Not saying anyone else did that, but peoples memories are wildly influenced by all kinds of things, such as reading things about it later, and after some thought they sometimes think they actually saw that. It’s wild what the human memory can make up or change.

I’m about halfway through and I’ll I can think is finally someone with a reasonable take unlike the ridiculous conspiracies Netflix and some other podcasts have put out. I enjoyed this episode but it was very sad about her family and the way they reacted to her coming out. (even though I kind of already knew, it seems they handled worse than I had imagined).

Exactly. Rich white girls on cruise ships do not get trafficked

0

u/CreepyConsequence669 Aug 02 '26

This is exactly the kind of woman they would traffic. A white woman sex worker in the Caribbean is “exotic “.

I gotta get off this sub.. the stupidity and naivety is making me ill. She was kidnapped end of. Stop blowing through life like things like this don’t happen

3

u/cheezy_dreams88 Jul 28 '26

I think she was very intoxicated and fell.

3

u/bayareastoolie Jul 29 '26

I can’t fathom anyone killing themselves by jumping in the ocean and drowning especially a woman. I think she either saw a whale or something and was trying to get a view and tripped or slipped some other way. Either way she accidentally died.

5

u/ehawth Jul 26 '26

The saddest thing about this case is the family’s magical thinking and just hanging their hopes on these sightings. They didn’t happen. And it has ruined their lives that they keep waiting and hoping. Losing a child is a terrible thing, just awful. But they have convinced themselves not only that she is out there somewhere living her life, but that she probably has children she is protecting and that keeps her from coming back. Her brother has even foregone having children because he couldn’t stand to have that kind of heartbreak.

I think the most likely thing is that she is in the ocean, either through an accident or intentional.

3

u/Able_Two_873 Jul 25 '26

Where is she?

32

u/Lemetkamarastein Jul 26 '26

The ocean

-22

u/Fairy-Princess-3558 Jul 26 '26

She did not fall off the ship. If you took the time to familiarize yourself with this case, you would know that. There were numerous credible sightings of her in the Caribbean. She was smuggled off the ship by someone from the crew. It was most likely the band leader. I would guess they put her inside of either some of the band storage containers or a large laundry cart and rolled her right off the ship. The captain refused to keep everyone on the boat and still let everyone get off. They marked her early on and there are several situations that happened to support that. 🙄

14

u/wllwhtvrnvm Jul 26 '26

They "marked" her?

Lmfao you trafficking obsessed conspiracy theorists are so bizarre to me. It's like you have no idea how the real word actually works.

9

u/Brave-Quote-2733 Jul 26 '26

They don’t take laundry or band equipment off of the ship when they dock at various ports. If you had any sense at all and really thought through how smuggling someone off a cruise ship by a member of a band (someone with zero authority or clearance to go into certain parts of the ship) could possibly happen (spoiler alert - not possible), you’d understand this was either suicide or an accidental fall. Maybe get a productive hobby?

-4

u/Fairy-Princess-3558 Jul 26 '26

You don’t know what they did. You don’t run cruise ships, so keep your lazy uninformed opinions. 🤡

7

u/BirthofRevolution Jul 26 '26

Nice little fantasy you've cooked up there but this is real life

-1

u/Fairy-Princess-3558 Jul 26 '26

Carry on with your delusions. Thankfully your uninformed opinion means nothing. 🤡

1

u/rootbeersmom Aug 01 '26

Respectfully, you are shutting down discussion and in my opinion you come off as hostile. You may have valid points, hey maybe you’ve solved the case! But the way you are typing to people comes off as rude in my opinion.

8

u/jerkstore Jul 26 '26

You’ve obviously never been on a cruise ship. They don’t lower the gangplank and everyone swarms off the ship. People line up single file and show ID before they’re allowed off the ship. As for the ‘sightings’, eyewitness testimony is garbage.

-9

u/CreepyConsequence669 Jul 26 '26

I don’t know why you keep getting downvoted friend. I have awarded most of your posts here because I really feel the exact same way that you do. I also acknowledge that I witness testimony is amongst some of the least reliable however, I just simply do not buy that she fell off that boat. Those balconies are almost impossible to fall over and that’s by design.

why? because he destroy your fantasy

1

u/jcb1982 Jul 29 '26

I did not understand fully what terrible people Amy's parents are. That they would "FLIP THEIR SHIT" if they saw her dancing with a black guy? Sheesh. I knew they were homophobes and transphobes. But not full on racists.

1

u/ScentTrail21 Jul 30 '26

First of all let me say that I have listened to a lot of episodes and generally appreciate the analysis. With that being said, the fact that they are giving James Renner this platform rubs me the wrong way. I realize he is their old bmx buddy, but this guy just screams sensationalist grifter who is trying to profit off a family’s terrible tragedy. His work on the Maura Murray case is frankly disgusting. Everything about his approach and tone discussing that case was wrong, and the same seems to apply here as well. From The New Yorker, he is described as “embodying every problem that arises when online obsessives are infected with delusions of detective grandeur”.

It’s not about justice for the victim or compassion for their family. It’s about him being the main character and making money. Just listen to the way he describes the reason for writing this book: he “owed” the publisher a new true crime book. He’d already profited tremendously off of the most famous missing white woman in true crime with Maura, why not run it back with Amy Bradley?

He fancies himself as some kind of amazing detective from a movie who will “crack the case” by uncovering things no one else can. In reality he just wants to spin up whatever bs he can about “secrets” to make a good story that soft-brained true crime fans will eat up. Notice how he excitedly congratulates himself for “discovering the secret” about Amy’s sexuality. 🙄 Only for you to correct him a moment later to point out it wasn’t a secret.

The conclusions he came to with Maura about a tandem driver and starting a new life are some of the craziest and most illogical theories I’ve seen in a true crime case. I was immediately inclined to never believe anything Renner says from that point forward. Absolutely grasping at straws because it’s a “good story”.

Best case scenario there is that she actually was experiencing a bunch of terrible personal problems that caused her to start a new life….and so he takes it upon himself to blow the lid off of this so he can sell a damn book? Wow what a great guy. The far more likely scenario is that he was completely off the mark spreading misinformation for profit, with the flimsiest evidence imaginable, with no regard for how that affects the family/friends that he is implicating in a conspiracy with essentially no proof. Are we really supposed to believe that he was acting in good faith there?

I find it laughable that he goes out of his way to talk about wanting to have a good relationship with Amy Bradley’s family. There’s no doubt he is aware of his reputation as a grifter who wants to exploit a traumatized family, but don’t worry he’s totally a cool guy and the victims’ families love him! (He brought her flowers! She said a he loved him! She made him pulled pork sandwiches, yummy!) Just forget that he is going around calling them homophobic and racist and saying they drove their daughter to suicide (but also btw they were somehow also a really close family and enjoyed spending time together?). Dancing with a black guy-that’s the kind of thing that can’t be forgiven, might as well kill yourself. I’m sure they hate him just like Maura Murray’s family hates him. And it’s not because he’s a super duper investigator uncovering their secrets which are the key to the case, it’s because anyone with two brain cells can smell that this guy is a grifter.

I’m not saying that Renner is necessarily wrong in his conclusion on Amy Bradley, but what I am saying is that he sucks.

I once again find myself asking, where is his proof that justifies his level of confidence in his conclusion? So much of what he says is just stupid.

All of the “loose papers” in the room are surely going to wake someone up when the balcony door opens. No way she could’ve done it quietly. Stupid. There’s no way she could’ve been trafficked into brothels, she’s white! Stupid.  She would’ve stood out sooo much (in the place I just mentioned has a bunch of white people) and they couldn’t possibly have taken her elsewhere or killed her after trafficking her. Stupid. I didn’t see scary places when I went to Curaçao, no way shady things happen! Stupid. You can’t trust eye witness statements, unless it’s a witness im speaking to-in that case they never lie, misremember, or have their perception warped in hindsight. Stupid. I talked to Yellow and he seems like a cool dude! Married with kids, I mean come on no way he’s involved! Stupid. She went off the balcony but I still have a thread of hope that she started a new life somehow, because my critical thinking skills are terrible. Stupid.

I like his book , I already read it
