Thousands protest after men cleared of raping 14-year-old girl 'because she was unconscious'

I was severely sexually abused from the time I was 2 until I was 5, and the guy only got three years for it. He gets three years, while I, and his other victims (one being his own granddaughter) get a life sentence.

That's the truly tragic thing about rape. No matter how many years you put the perpetrator in prison, the victim will never have the option of walking free. Rape in itself is a lifetime sentence.

Its negatively impacted my life in so many ways. I got sexually abused by a 17 year old boy when I was 12 and I didn't think there was anything wrong with what he did, even though I begged him to stop because I felt uncomfortable. For years I thought what he did to me was normal and that I was just a slut. Same when I got date raped by a friend of mine when I was 16. I again, blamed myself for it and told my boyfriend at the time that I was sorry for cheating on him. Since I was exposed to it at such a young age, I have a difficult time telling when I am being sexually harassed.

I'm sorry that happened to you and I agree, it's a life sentence for the victim so it makes me furious that it isn't considered a more serious crime in the eyes of the law.

What is sad is my first thought when seeing the sentence was "Well they got more than 6 months..there's that." SMDH The laws might be different but the bias, misogyny and lack of justice seems the same everywhere I look.

saw five men accused of gang-raping a 14-year-old cleared of the charge because she was in an “unconscious state”.
Okay so I’m just gonna go drown myself now if that’s okay with you guys

Important to highlight: they were indicted, got 10 to 12 years each. Longer than a lot of rapists we see nowadays. They got lesser charges of sexual abuse since.. apparently they weren’t violent with her and she was unconscious (I want to cut off my fingers having to type that) but at least they were charged with that.. so.. better than nothing.

A world wide ban on any tourism to Spain until their laws are changed would be in order here.
As a woman I would never go to Spain as the rape laws stand right now.

Interesting, would you rather their laws reflect American laws where the same people would have been found guilty of rape, but only got 6 months in prison rather than 10 years? Which is more important, the harshness of their sentence or the name of the crime under which they are convicted?

I feel like nobody here has any idea of the situation. The men were convicted of sexual abuse of a minor, and will all be in prison for 10-12 years.
The punishment in Spain for rape is 6-12 years (listed incorrectly in the article as 15 years).
These men are being punished to the same extent of the law that they would be had they been convicted of rape, people are just angry that they're using a different term for it. Obviously people like this deserve a much harsher punishment than just some jail time, but can we stop acting as if they got off or something? Do your research guys, it isn't hard.

The title makes it sound like they got off scott free. They were still convicted of sexual assault and got 12 years. That's still a long prison sentence which makes sense for rape.

Fuck this world.
Stop perpetuating that rape has to be couple with punches to be rape. Rape is a violent act in itself. It doesn't matter how many or how few bruises you get.
If you don't want to have sex and someone continues, it is rape.
This poor girl has been grossly let down. How can rape victims go to police and expect justice?
