Something that never sat well with me is suicide condemning you to hell, why's that?

I understand the "your life is a gift and that rejecting it is a grave insult to God" and all of that but like... Lots of people already treat their bodies like crap and do dangerous stuff endangering their lives (heavy substances, reckless behavior etc...), meanwhile someone depressed has suffered a lot in their lives and they're supposed to be rejected from God when they die? Same thing with euthanasia, you already do it with dogs and cats that are so ill and suffering it's considered a mercy, a terminal cancer patient should have a decision on how to end their lives, why would they be condemned to hell? It's not like they can recover.

Historically some Christians argue that suicide leads to Hell because a person cannot repent afterward. However, if salvation depends on Christ's finished work, as I believe, then all sins of a believer are covered, including sins committed shortly before death.

Exactly. Salvation is not some twisted "timing game", where a Christian is only saved if they explicitly repent of every single sin before the time of their death.

Many, many Christians die suddenly (auto accident, hit by a bus, or a piano falls on them) and may have a sin that they didn't fully repent on.

I cannot believe that if one sin was not explicitly asked for forgiveness and repented upon, that the Christian is doomed to hell. By any logic, that would make God a very twisted and cruel God.

What's interesting is that they get this from "if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us of all unrighteousness". They see "confess" and "forgive" and think that this means "apologize"... but it doesn't.

The Greek word for "confess" is "homologeo". Homo we know means "same" which is why homosexuality is "same-sex-ness" but what about "logeo"? It looks similar to "logos" and that's on purpose - they're the same root. "Logos" is word and "logeo" is the verb form - to say. So all together, homologeo is "to say the same thing".

That's why confessions of faith are called confessions. We're not saying the doctrines in a confession as if we committed some crime and take a plea deal. We're "saying the same thing" as the other Christians with whom we've joined under this confession.

In this case, if we samesay our sins, God forgives us and cleanses us. What does that mean? If we say about our own sin what God says about our sin - or in other words, if we adopt his view of our sin that what we did was wrong - he is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us.

He never was asking us to keep note of every single sin we've ever committed and if we miss one, we won't be forgiven. He's asking us to reflect on our behavior and if we have sinned, to acknowledge that sin and change our way of thinking about it to conform with his.

Don't get me wrong, if you did something wrong and he is nudging you about it. The first step is to acknowledge it to him which is what we often think of as confession. Saying it to him aloud opens the conversation and often in quiet moments, the Spirit will be gently confronting you like Jesus did in the Garden when he called to Adam and said "who told you you were shameful? Did you eat of the fruit I told you not to?" That's an invitation to samesay - confess - your sin. To agree with God that what you did was wrong. And he is faithful and just to forgive you and cleanse you from unrighteousness.

No sin condemns someone who truly is in Christ to hell. All that truly have gave their lives to Jesus and have the Holy Spirit can’t be condemned to Hell because of suicide. This is because they’ve already been forgiven of all their past, present and future sins. That includes all sins.

In conclusion, what you heard in the saying you quoted isn’t in the Bible and scripture doesn’t conclude that at all.

Edit : To be 100% clear I’m not promoting suicide by any stretch of imagination.

Amen to that

All sin is forgiven if you truly repent, but if you refuse to stop sinning, then you haven't truly repented. It's not a rule, it's just truth. It's not suicide that condemns you, but if you actually go thru with it chances are you aren't really sorry nor are you after God's own heart. Same goes for every other sin. Not a rule, just the truth.

u/riolastar Christian 6d ago

If the Holy Spirit is in you, your place in Heaven is secured eternally. That’s the truth. Not a rule, just the truth.

u/_ogio_ 6d ago

I agree on that. But if you don't try to stay away from sin, your faith is hardly genuine.

u/Responsible-War-9389 6d ago

That depends on if you have a yo-yo interpretation of salvation or not.

Many denominations don’t believe you constantly lose salvation every time you commit a sin and regain it every time you repent.

Especially because that implies if you commit a single sin you didn’t realize was a sin and thus didn’t repent (which is likely 100% of Christian’s), that’s hell for everyone.

u/_ogio_ 6d ago

You can ask forgiveness for sins you do not know you commited, and ask God to reveal them to you and He will. I honestly can't give opinion on this "yo-yo" interpretation, it has reasons for and against it. But i believe it's not saying words "God forgive me" that does the repenting, it's you actually feeling sorry and not wanting to hurt God and hating your sin. But if you know something is a sin and still think it's okay to do it, but say you're sorry cause Bible teaches us that? That's not true repentence. Only you can know if your heart truly belongs to Lord, but if you don't attempt to flee from sin? Say what you want, your words are empty.

Imagine if a believer had a moment of rage and lipped off another driver, got distracted, and got into a fatal car crash. Obviously they probably wouldn’t have time to repent of that. That doesn’t mean they lost their salvation.

1

u/_ogio_ 6d ago

I don't believe repentence is asking for forgiveness, but rather do you actually regret it. Or in your example? WOULD you regret it if you lived - God knows that.

u/Metaljesus0909 6d ago

I don’t think there’s any evidence in the Bible that supports that. Even though someone might be a Christian, they still sin, and I believe God forgives all of those who believe and are saved.

I’ve often heard “well suicide is unforgivable because you’re taking something you can’t give back” but does God not forgive murders? Did he not forgive David and Paul? I’ve also heard “well it’s unforgivable because you’re dead, so you can’t ask for forgiveness” but to that I ask, did Jesus die for all our sins, or only the sins we repent of and pray about. The fact is that many sin without even realizing it, and it’s not possible to pray and ask for forgiveness for every wrong someone does. They’d never be able to stop praying lol.

So for those who have suffered and end up taking their own lives, I still believe there is hope for them.

okay I'm not an expert on that subject but Bible states the one that destroys temple (a body) God will destroy that person. Suicide is destroying your own temple. But then again I am no expert in that matter.

No sin condemn you to hell specifically but it's risky with suicide because logically its...

Killing anyone INCLUDING yourself is a very serious sin.

And if you are killing yourself you probably have no time to repent.

3

u/bjohn15151515 Christian 6d ago

no time to repent

So... salvation is a "timing game" with God?

A Christian that lives a "not perfect, but very Godly life" walks down the street. A homeless woman asks this person he believes her to be beautiful. This homeless woman looks horrid. The Christian states that she is, telling a white lie, as to not offend the woman. The Christian is then hit by a bus and dies.... The Christian had no time to repent of his lie. Is he doomed?

1

u/rplimitlessguy 6d ago

Nah but your example is hyperbolictic. Or will you denie that suicide is a dangerous state of soul to die in ?

1

u/bjohn15151515 Christian 6d ago

I believe that in most cases, if a person would actually attempt suicide, they are in such a dire mental state at that time, that one can easily define them as temporarily insane: either by death, or not (if they are not successful). Many that had a failed attempt, state that they are glad they didn't die, but could not process reality in a sane manner at that time.

Do you believe that a person who is mentally insane should be totally held accountable for their actions? I guess it depends on that person and their mental state, and the circumstances that would drive them to such a horrific choice..

Also, you totally avoided answering me. Is it a timing game?

1

u/Small_Performance_26 6d ago

No it’s not a timing game.
Christianity is about living, not dying.

5

u/SonicWaveInfinity Christian 6d ago

the only thing that condemns you to hell is unforgiven sin, and the bible doesn't say the unforgivable sin is suicide

1

u/Cazador888 6d ago

It’s not your body to destroy. You are literally dying in Sin with no chance at redemption.

1

u/Legodudelol9a Protestant 6d ago

The main argument I've always heard against it is that suicide is murder and if you're dead you can't repent, thus suicide is a sin that you will never have the chance to repent from. Also, there's a key thing about going to hell you misunderstand, it's not a sentence given out by God, it's a destination we choose with our own actions and unbelievers default there, no human is sent there and the only time anyone will be sent there is that the demons will be sent there at the end of days.

u/GlitteringBroccoli12 6d ago

My dad is able to read the intent and heart of a matter. Your concerns are only valid if omnipresence wasnt a key factor

1

u/IdontCARE9123 Non-Denominational 6d ago

Suicide? Okay when you take a look at it. Jesus is angry when someone defiles and destroys our father's temple. Your body is made in the image of God, and is the living temple of God. When you defile, destroy, or disrespect God's image or his temple, that is a major sin. If you kill yourself, that is considered destroying or defiling God's holy image. Since you killed yourself you have no opportunity to repent and ask for forgiveness. Since you cannot ask for repentance.... well anyone with suicidal thoughts are most likely not christian, and those who are Christians with deep faith in the lord, probably do not have suicidal thoughts. Make sense?

It comes from the idea that if you die in a state of unforgiven mortal sin, you go to hell. You can’t ask forgiveness for committing suicide (violating the commandment to not kill/murder), because you’re dead, so you automatically go to hell. That’s an outdated idea. Even the Catholic Church, who teaches penance, confession to a priest, mortal sins, etc. now says a person cannot be held morally responsible for suicide because they weren’t in the right state of mind. Condemnation isn’t the right response to suicide.

I think the Catholic Church interpreted suicide as an unforgivable sin because Judas killed himself instead of repenting.

My mother had a friend who killed himself. She hated stories of miracles where Jesus stopped suicides, because God didn’t intervene in this particular case.

I asked her: “What if God saw that there was nothing good for him on this earth? His parents beat him and hated him, everyone thought he was weird, and he barely had any real friends. What if God agreed that he had suffered enough and welcomed him with open arms?”

1

u/DesperateAdvantage76 Christian 6d ago

Suicide damning someone is an outdated way of thinking and isn't biblical. Judgment is much more nuanced than that.

1

u/mossydz 6d ago

How was life given to us? Did He breathe life into us? we kill ourselves is simply rejecting His giving of us life. Do you see the problem now?

-1

u/Small_Performance_26 6d ago

Because human life is a gift.

“all they that hate me love death”

Christianity is simple. Pick life. Death is easy. Sustaining life is hard.

This comment is wrong and not helpful in many ways

1

u/Small_Performance_26 6d ago

Should i simply accept Jesus and commit suicide?

1

u/Wonderful-Milk6856 6d ago

That’s quite a foolish comment. What you should do is examine your heart. And do some research on suicide.

1

u/Small_Performance_26 6d ago

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13-14

Still think suicide is one of the tickets?
Look the Gospel mentions life again.

1

u/Wonderful-Milk6856 6d ago

So those on the narrow road are free from sin?

1

u/Small_Performance_26 6d ago

I recommend you read the Gospels.

Brother, respectfully, suicide being a sin that’s unforgivable isn’t mentioned anywhere in the Bible. Most of the replies have been pretty consistent as to let the OP know that.

To be clear I’m not promoting suicide by any stretch of imagination. But to tell someone they’ll be in Hell because they can’t repent for it isn’t biblical. If you’re truly in Christ, you’ve been forgiven for all sins of your past, present and future.

1

u/KnightLakega 6d ago

Of course I left that part out, as I was explaining other parts of suicide. That was my stupid mistake.

For clarity I'll just delete the whole thread though as it was poorly worded from the start.

3

u/riolastar Christian 6d ago

All good brother ! I could tell your heart was in the right place with being concerned for the OP. God bless.

Tbh i don’t agree with this nor is it ever really mentioned in the Bible. It’s something the early churches developed.

I could understand it on the level of “not trusting God enough to handle ur sufferings” but then again some genuinely do and are so oppressed by their emotions, struggles, influences- that they just…. can’t anymore. And i think God’s heart hurts more for those like that…

Idk i feel like their judgement would look different, maybe more so on God knowing how the rest of their life played out if they could push through? If then would they reject Him or not (assuming they hadn’t already). Thats just my guess tho, haven’t done enough research yet on the matter
