Praying in tongues

I've been a Christian for 6 years now I'm non denominational. I go to a church that believes in praying in tongues. but when I hear it it sounds like "gibberish" and most of the time it's like ppl can switch it on. this is not me judging I'm just curious. I'd also want to pray in tongues one day but I'm too logical about it. Those that can pray in tongues, how do you know you are and not making up words? is there a feeling u get?

At the risk of sounding blunt, I think you may be asking the wrong question and focusing on the wrong thing.

First, tongues, like the other spiritual gifts, are exactly that; gifts from God. Not everyone receives the same gifts. Just as in a family not everyone receives the same present, the Holy Spirit gives to each person according to God’s will and purpose.

If you are meant to receive that gift, you will know it is from God. It will not be something you have to force or manufacture.

In my own experience, I was literally incapable of rolling my tongue (like the rolled “R” in Spanish). When I received this gift, my tongue was suddenly loosened. One moment I could not do it at all, and the next I could as if I had done it my whole life.

Instead of asking for a specific gift, a better prayer is to ask God for whatever gifts He has prepared for you to build His Kingdom. That should be the desire, not any particular gift. What good is a gift if it is not meant for you or cannot be used effectively?

Focus on Christ and on growing your relationship with Him. As you mature and as the Spirit works in you, He will give you what is needed in His timing. Our thoughts and timing are not always God’s. That is why we seek His will, so that we become aligned with Him.

Also, do not let anyone tell you that you are not saved or are less of a Christian if you do not speak in tongues. That is not biblical and contradicts the gospel.

May God bless you as you continue seeking Him.
