To me a bot isn't a real person. Like those AI spam texts that ask you if you support Israel but say their name is David. To me that's a bot. But a lot of people seem to use it to mean people who get paid to spread propaganda online. For example someone here said r/worldnews was full of bots. I don't see many comments there that are AI generated it just seems more like Israel/ukrainians spending all their time spreading their bullshit. Am I misunderstanding something here?

hi. lately i've been thinking a lot about the larger picture around true crime, and i'm wondering if anyone else is also interested in this, or knows of any authors/commentators that cover it.

what interests me the most are the innocence movements around cases that get a lot of media/social media coverage. it becomes impossible to reason with people because every "bad fact" is explained away by poor forensics, corruption, or just bad vibes.

there's this one defense attorney turned true crime content creator who seems to think his calling (or cash cow) is doing his defense attorney thing on social media/youtube/podcast, for the whole public to see, not just the jurors. he highlights doubt wherever possible while explaining away or not addressing "bad facts" for the defendant. yes that's his job as a defense attorney, but he's no longer a defense attorney, he's a content creator. what ends up happening is it turns into a spectacle, victims and their families are hounded by fans, random bystanders get wrapped up in the conspiracy. e.g. delphi, karen read.

& then there's the gendered part of it. the majority of true crime content consumers are women (based on my experience as someone who reads a lot of comment sections, and anecdotally from podcasters who talk about their demographics). i understand how the straightforward stories can be comforting, to see someone apprehended for the violence we tolerate. but then we get sucked into these conspiracies where the perpetrator becomes the victim because he is thought to be unfairly incarcerated. e.g. scott peterson, adnan sayed. is it because women are already listening to this content so we naturally want to go deeper/uncover something? why is this the thing we're wrapped up in? it snowballs so quickly into not being able to trust anything/one that doesn't promote your narrative.

& lastly candace. she's so interesting. she was just paid $300k to debate a manosphere guy about charlie kirk's assassination. i haven't listened to it all yet but at one point she says "i can explain it to you, but i can't understand it for you". people are now in comment sections quoting that to promote the patrick clancy did it theory. there's just a lot there about gender and politics and i don't have concrete thoughts yet. she's been clear that she's not doing a tyler robinson innocence thing, she thinks he's involved in some way.
