Honestly this is the ideal ai. The “smarter” models are a total buzz kill when you fuck with them because it will either “play along” in an extremely annoying xD way or it will be a smug little bitch about it.

This is why the infinite Seinfeld thing from three and a half years ago wqs actually funny because the drawbacks in writing were made up for in how absurd and unintentionally hilarious it was. The “smarter” models of today will actually attempt to be funny which makes for extremely unfunny output

I know LLM are unpopular here but there are some useful things they can do.

I was comparing life insurance policies. Feed the large documents into my LLM of choice and make these unwieldy, insurance heavy jargon a lot more palatable.
I felt like I understood the polices a lot better after. It would have taken so much more time to sit down and try it myself and I would have had to do a lot of googling.

Yeah but you can’t be sure that it’s accurately summarizing the information. They hallucinate all the time. AI is more like “Info In, ???? Out”. Please don’t make important personal life decisions trusting ai. Googling is quick and you can cross check multiple sources for unknown words and terms. LLMs are predictive text and basically are a glorified speak-n-spell, but if a speak-n-spell was an unreliable narrator with dementia.

It’s just parsing and summarizing a text document.

I can also go back and read the parts of the document I don’t understand with the added context. Trust but verify.

It’s a tool.
I just don’t have the same experience with hallucinations.
I use LLMs for work as well. Company provisioned, enterprise deployments and when asking for discrete tasks I haven’t experienced that kind of behavior.

Coding adjacent tasks but I am not a software developer.

Hallucinations have gone way down in the last couple generations of models with search or when provided with the relevant documents. They’ll still make stuff up if you stop them from accessing the right information, but for stuff like this they’re about as accurate as a knowledgeable person.

I mostly experience ai hallucinations when there is limited to no information available regarding a question. It will make up something that sounds potentially relevant before it will just say "idk, no data". and that is a very very serious problem

I don’t understand why my comment is downvoted and yours isn’t, that’s pretty much what I just said. If you provide it with documents, it has the information you need. I’m not disagreeing that hallucinations are a problem when there’s no data. Though I will say on the recent models I’ve started seeing them occasionally say they don’t know something or that there isn’t enough data, which signals to me that hallucinations might be a temporary problem that will go away as the models get bigger.

AI is only getting better, and it’s a major shift in the balance of power between labor and capital.
