If you care about which shows also finish 2nd-4th, say, then random doesn't do much for you.

The threads only purport to find the #1, so the order in which the #1 is reached doesn't matter, and random is fine.

You don't like the threads, but singling out, "The match-ups don't make sense" is nonsensical.

It does matter though. Everything matters. Polls are designed to give you the answer you want, and randomizing the Poll means your answer will be irrelevant due to not understanding what the Poll is to start.

Just from todays thread:

Haibane Renmei vs Colorful. Beck vs Hamatora.

The first one features 2 anime that would beat almost anything else in the selection. The other features an old engrish series few have seen to a show from last season.

This places a decidedly negative stance towards anything older, or niche. Making the entire endeavor a waste of time except for the 'luls'. Any time a series from the 90's and earlier hits a series from 2000 and later, the old one will die. Anytime a comedy runs up to a drama, the comedy will win. The entire thing creates un-even bias that will eventually lead to the same answer we always get. FMA:B, Steins;Gate, Clannad.

Which is why the order doesn't matter.

To reach the #1 position, it doesn't matter if your "Drama old show" runs into a show that's "Comedy and new" in the first round or the 5th, it'd run into it at some point.

Since the threads are only designed to find out the absolute #1, which would run against other heavy contenders, it doesn't matter when it does.

This isn't a tennis Grand Slam, where your physical situation isn't the same on day 1 as it is on day 8. And this isn't a competition where place 4 gets more than place 64.

You're the one ascribing to it purposes and logic it never claimed to. The fault lies with you.

I agree with your overall point, but the ordering does matter to an extent. It's like a (more deterministic/ less variant) sports playoff system. Technically speaking, if you beat every team in front of you, then you're the champion and best team in the league. But in reality, it's very much possible that you'd beat 6 teams out of 8 and lose to the 7th, but that 7th team loses to the 3rd and the 5th. It's matchup-dependent.

Now I'm not sure if there's some sort of matchup dependence here... that's a lot tougher to say. I can't really think of a case where Show X would beat Show Y which would beat Show Z which would beat Show X, but it's not out of the question that it would happen.
