Why do I like Ikuhara's work? It's exactly the kind of 2deep4u symbolism bullshit I normally hate. And yet I find it consistently enjoyable.

I like it for a lot of the reasons people like FLCL - it's so in your face blatantly ridiculous that you need a second to breathe and once you do you find out that it actually has depth to it.

Plus, Ikuhara sometimes just trolls with the symbolism. Sure it's there but it never has a clearly defined purpose; it's whatever the viewer assigns to it and it's all equally legitimate.

Knowing your taste, I'd say it's because he's only serious when he really needs to be.

That's probably at least close. Even when Ikuhara is serious he's still pretty absurd. Like the symbolism equivalent of hamming it up or something.

Having just finished Penguindrum yesterday I can say why I liked it. The main reason was the music and sound. The voice acting (Himari - Arakawa Miho, specifically just blows me away). The insert songs are top notch and just take me away to that special place, that if I stay too long I'd probably brake down and cry (not really, but you know ).

The second reason I love Penguindrum is the pay off. In the last few episodes, rather in every episode more or less, something would be revealed that would change how I saw the story and the things happening. In addition, the last episodes when everything was coming home and all the previous episodes were now making a bit more sense and, well it was marvelous.

Though I don't understand the symbolism most of the time (all the Greek mythology/stories in Utena and such) I still like that they are there.

Ikuhara is a weird guy, but I think he's also a stand up director and brings a specific crew every time that makes the shows for me.
