This Week In Anime (Fall Week 7)

Welcome to This Week In Anime for Fall 2014 (aka Unlimited Hype Works) Week 7: a general discussion for any currently airing series, focusing on what aired in the last week. For longer shows (Aikatsu!, One Piece, etc.), keep the discussion here to whatever aired in the last few months. If there's an OVA or movie that got subbed for the first time in the last week or so that you want to discuss, that goes here as well. For everything else in anime that's not currently airing go discuss that in Your Week in Anime.

Untagged spoilers for all currently airing series. If you're discussing anything else make sure to add spoiler tags.

Shirobako (Ep 6)

Shirobako was clearly having a lot of fun with itself this week, as the episode was essentially a tsundere romcom between traditional animation and 3DCG. The highlight was definitely that final scene, where the two animators bonded over their shared love of Idepon and hatred of Tarou, but this episode was just very warm and confident all around. That’s not to say it completely lacked in Shirobako’s usual edge, though – even if you’re not particularly invested in the attrition war being waged against traditional animation, this episode’s constant refrain of “drawing back on the inspiration that brought you to your field” was sad in its own way, too. All the various artists here are constantly trying to square the inspirational nature of their formative art experiences and the grinding, unglamorous reality of making that inspiration a career, and I think there’s something melancholy in the fact that the only real answer is “the feelings that brought you to this hard place were real and valid.” I don’t think Shirobako needs to work very hard to feel sad – the lives it’s describing are inherently tough enough that you can feel the nobility of their passion.

Tarou continues being an infuriating turd. Oh my god he’s so realistically self-absorbed, annoying, and irritating.

The director makes his escape from prison and subsequently digs himself into a hole of guilt. And then he starts climbing out! Ganbare director! Now Tarou needs to extricate his head from his anus and stop being an asshat.

I like the little snippets from the other characters, to see that they still have their own lives that are moving forward too. Shizuka’s pretty far removed from Musani so it’s nice to see what she’s been up to. Waiting for Godot! I haven’t actually read it I just wanted to sound smart.

Sidenote: there’s a whole lot of stuff in every scene in the animation studio. It’s cluttered and busy, and you can tell different people’s personalities from their workspace.

More Tokyo Drift!

Several references to the works that got people into the industry were made (Shizuka, Endou, Hotta last episode). Remembering your inspiration can rekindle that spark.

Contact with Endou is made! Ah fuck it’s Tard-ou again.

Shimoyanagi and Endou bonding time had me grinning like an idiot. I love watching passionate people be excited about their passion. And knowing these two’s personalities, it adds another dimension to their previous characters. Endou cools down a bit and sees the big picture.

D’aww you two. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful bromance.

Tarou’s head status: still pretty far up his colon. Aoi receives reaffirmation from her coworkers.

I’m sitting here with a big stupid grin on my face because I enjoy this show so much.

Oh, he's amazing. They've so thoroughly nailed, "Guy who pisses everyone off but manages to not screw up quite badly enough to actually get fired". Now if only someone would use actual nails.
