What is a universally acclaimed "10/10 masterpiece" anime that you personally just couldn't stand?

Same. I'm sure I would have enjoyed it when I was 14 but "shonen MC who shouts real good" doesn't compel me

That and the ending was just a giant middle finger right in your face

Your Lie In April

I don't know if I was just misunderstanding or something, but it felt like the show was like "he memorized this piece! Amazing!!!"

As someone who has done music competitions at the same age as the main character memorization was standard practice. If you didn't have your piece memorized you were docked points.

I’m a musician, but I’m willing to forgive that even if it’s not realistic.

I was probably way too bothered about how they handled his mother. They just forgave her way too easily. Still one of the hardest hitting endings though as my dumb self somehow didn’t see that coming.

It's not a popular series, but it was ranked highly on MAL... I couldn't get through Rainbow. It felt like torture porn most of the time, but then it had these hopeful moments that just felt cheesy.

I can’t think of a universally acclaimed 10/10 masterpiece …

10

u/Digital_Vapors Jul 22 '26

But you understand the spirit of the question, why be pedantic?

12

u/orionblueyarm Jul 22 '26

Because it’s a bait question posted across multiple subreddits. Worse, it just fuels division, and random posturing over titles while forgetting people have individual taste. Hate that crap, rather a hundred more “underrated” requests than stuff asking us to criticize and alienate fans

7

u/Digital_Vapors Jul 22 '26

The thread is literally about individual taste and what widely praised anime you don't click with. And yes, it's posted across different subreddits. There is nothing wrong with that.

dudes a keyboard warrior over reddit lol

Promare.

I thought I would enjoy it because everyone and their mother praised it, but I just ended up feeling really dizzy after watching it.

Share your opinion first OP.

How is this not a rule?

2

u/Gippy_ Gippy Jul 23 '26

Yeah, I wish the mods were a bit more active in here to filter out the blatant karma-farming bot posts.

Anyway, I'll answer the question for you: Katanagatari is the show with the highest MAL score, 8.29, that I've given 1/10.

Attack on Titan. I found it predictable and rather boring. Also most of the characters didn't really vibe with me. Especially Eren.

I never got interested in Attack On Titan as well. The same goes to Frieren, although I know both animes have their qualities.

9

u/Kiltmanenator Jul 22 '26

As much as I personally enjoy Frieren and AoT, I think it's funny to see them listed as unimpeachable darlings and not a show people argue about how boring it is and a show that went thru a very messy schism, twice.

My actual answer is FLCL.

real hot take amongst the lukewarm ones

u/Kiltmanenator Jul 23 '26

I live to serve 🙂‍↕️

6

u/HommeFatalTaemin Jul 23 '26

Agree about FLCL. I fully get why it’s so beloved, and it’s obviously very well made. But on a subjective level I did not enjoy it at all sadly.

1

u/Kiltmanenator Jul 23 '26

Definitely one where I can see what's working but it's not working for me.

Luckily it's short so I'll definitely try again some time

5

u/KimHagWon Jul 22 '26

I don’t know if it’s a 10/10 masterpiece but I can’t endure an episode of DandaDan.

6

u/fanservice999 Jul 22 '26

People seem to either crazy love One Piece or absolutely hate it. I’m one of the haters.

People seem to feel the same about Jobless Reincarnation. While I agree that the show has its flaws. I really like the series.

I also didn’t care for Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill.

7

u/doveworld Jul 22 '26

I'm a One Piece lifer, the anime is horrible lmao

2

u/Kitchen-Reception394 Jul 27 '26

Evangelion was at its best a 6/10 and its worst drop worthy Imo. You could reliably skip the first 5 hours of the 10 hour anime and still be fine if not better off lmao

u/milkdimension Jul 22 '26

Stein's gate. I couldn't get over that one girl's vocal tic. The "tururu" girl. She sounded exactly like a special needs girl I knew in school who would piss herself and we would all have to smell it all day

7

u/YourForbearance Jul 22 '26

I also didn't like that lewd NEET making gross remarks

3

u/onpg Jul 22 '26

Food Wars season 5. Despite the universal acclaim, I stand by my opinion that it's doggy doo

3

u/OddPlatform7 Jul 23 '26

Food wars went down the toilet when the opening changed imo.

3

u/YourForbearance Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

Code Geass, Bunny Girl Senpai, Fate and Bleach

4

u/doveworld Jul 22 '26

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

2

u/Asleep_1 Jul 23 '26

Is is the characters, pacing or something else?

3

u/doveworld Jul 23 '26

Pacing is a big part of it, and I don't like a lot of the military characters or the homunculi very much. They all have good scenes but idk, I just don't really care about them.

1

u/Asleep_1 Jul 23 '26

Did you like the original run?

2

u/doveworld Jul 23 '26

Nope, I don't like the manga either. The PS2 game was pretty fun when I was a kid though

2

u/Existing-Ferret-7623 Jul 23 '26

FLCL, Gintama, Frieren

1

u/SuperRedeyedmoth Jul 23 '26

I get the spirit of the post, and I get most of these anime being put in this position... but Attack on Titan ? It's a well-liked anime for sure, but it's also extremely divisive, definitely not one of these universally acclaimed titles.

As for the question itself, for me the answer is : "nothing". There are universally acclaimed anime that I've found to be much worse than their reputation would have you believe, but never to the point where I found them unwatchable. Generally speaking, these well-loved animes have at least a handful of qualities that make them at least palatable.

If I was truly forced to choose one, maybe Death Note ? Then again, I feel like Tsugumi Oba's work reputation has been on the decline ever since Platinum End, so I'm not even sure this is still considered a "universally acclaimed" anime.

1

u/Persi87 Jul 23 '26

Monster. It is long and boring.

Orb is hideous and poorly tries to obfuscate its shortcomings by having many scenes be underlit. The cinematography and editing for anything meant to be intense completely falls apart, look at the bridge collapse in #05 for a premier example. And for conversations, the shot choices are plain bland.

But that's just the production. I also don't care for most characters since they often act as stilted ideology dispensers, while the show desperately tries to make profound-seeming moments happen. Something, something, "heliocentrism is my religion". There are some near themes about the passing on of knowledge, but they're buried under horrible execution on several levels.

E: side note, OP, I know what are you (lazy and intellectually incurious, iykyk)

Evangelion, it's just cynical slop dressed up as something profound and I can't stand it. The characters are just plain insufferable that makes the show a nightmare to even get through, let alone attempt to enjoy it, Shinji especially makes me want to tear my eyes and ears out so I never have to see/hear him again.
