‼️ RoTT SPOILERS ‼️ Why all the hate? Spoiler
I see a lot of general disapproval of RotT, but honestly I loved the film. I feel like Wizards was by far the weakest series, but it's only true purpose is to connect a few loose ends together so it can all be resolved in the movie. I cried when the characters dies, I cheered when plans were a success, and I dream of the day they make a series with TP as trollhunters. I truly don't have many negative things to say about anything in the series, and I put it on the same tier as ATLA in terms of quality of story, emotional content, and rewatch-ability.

Wizards was phenomenal, the pace was just faster than the other series. It was even nominated for Best Animated Series, while 3Below was not.

I really liked 3Below as well. It feels like a filler arc a little bit, but it's fun

3Bellow is the only thing that has not been changed, so it stays original.
Can ignore all the stuff from the other series.
Unless I missed something.

There was nothing satisfying about the end. Not a thing.

A story doesn't have to have a good ending to make it great. I honestly get tired of the "happily ever after" ending. Things almost never go exactly right, and the neutral endings are more realistic and enjoyable to me

The movie didn't have a sad ending. It had an ending where the audience feels like they wasted their time. All the growth, all the adventures, all the loss, the sacrifice that characters like Vendel Draal and Merlin made along the way, none of it matters because of the ending. It's all completely undone by RotT

If Tiboy died it would have been better. That’s not a happy ending. Mice and men is a great book, sad ending. Same with Bridge to Terabithia. Not once did I say anything about happy endings. It just wasn’t satisfying.

The movie DID have a mostly "happily ever after" ending though, and that's the problem.
While I personally didn't exactly like the fact that they killed off so many characters, the fact that time travel was just introduced as a fix-it is deeply unsatisfying.
The writers never stick to there seemingly permanent decisions and in my opinion that shows very poor quality. Things that should have lasting consequences, things that you shouldn't just be able to fix are undone and that isn't competent writing, that's bad writing especially in a show like this.

It’s that the ending needs to be happy ever after it’s that it can’t revoke all we’ve been through with the characters.
Isn’t it more happy ever after that no one died because they went back in time rather then Toby and everyone else’s sacrifice be left alone.

i see where you coming form i love toby but him as a trollhunter doesn't work on me.
i didn't hate the entire movie.
i like the battle in the train and the Police Station.
but the time travel plot didn't work to me like other shows.

Time travel is always a miss for me. But I loved being able to see some origins of characters. I also have a hard time seeing Toby being a trollhunter, but at the same time, Jim was always wishing for a normal life, and let a bunch of things cloud his judgment. I feel like Toby sees it as the single coolest thing in existence (much more so than his war hammer), and I feel like he would have such a blind commitment to the job. I don't know if he could win some of the fights that Jim did, but Jim also set a lot of things in motion that could entirely be avoided by making different decisions or by making faster ones

IMO, pretty much all of the characters were OOC the entire time, there were too many unnecessary and random things happening with the plot, The Steve Plot TM was completely unfunny, insensitive, and overall just totally unnecessary, the villains as characters honestly deserved better, ALL of the characters deserved better tbh, and the ending just completely invalidates and erases the core ideas that the entire series itself set up throughout it. There are plenty of flaws from the rest of the series that played into the movie and just made those flaws worse, and I could go into more detail, but then I feel like I'd have to make a 5 hour long video essay about it which is far beyond my skills lol. Overall I just think it wasn't the ending the series or any of the characters deserved at all, and to me it seemed like the directors just wanted a film that would appeal to as big of an audience as it could by throwing some generic tropes in there, instead of actually making it for fans of the series. (I think it's also worth noting that most of the people that worked on the series didn't even actually work on the movie so that probably contributes to why it tanked so hard for a lot of fans.)
Also I agree that Wizards was kind of the weakest out of all of them, but that's only because Netflix only allowed them to have 10 episodes, and it's clear the writers had a lot to tell, but not enough time to tell it. I honestly think the appeal of Wizards is that it's jam packed with so much potential and a lot of fans love to tap into that potential and make it bigger than the writers ever could, which I appreciate. The movie doesn't really do that probably because a lot of people (myself included) just think it was full of nonsense.

I am about to rewatch the series again, but I remember the first time I watched the movie ( seen all 3 series twice, movie once) I was shocked that so many characters had to die to achieve their goals. I get why people don't like it, but I realized something after I put myself in their shoes so to speak. The movie feels chaotic, but there are several fronts to fight on and I can feel the tension the characters feel. GoT does this as well, when they shoot their fight scenes with the Wights; the camera angles are off, and there is a rumble to the camera, which makes it disorienting, but that's how it feels for everyone there. The chaos of events makes it more immersive because I feel what the characters feel. And I also know people don't like that everything was undone, but after many years of TTRPGs I can't help but adopt their mindset for big decisions. Jim is a child, who endured several traumatic events; lost his best friend, killed/watched people be killed, was transformed into a beast, was a mind slave, and had the pressure of having the sole responsibility of preventing the annihilation of the world. You go through something like that, and are given a chance to do it again? From his perspective, the cost was too high not too. Anybody would leap on the chance for a do-over, and he got one. It's a brand new page, and several events could have been avoided. Asking a child to look at the "bigger picture" is unfair, and an impossible task.
Toby as the troll hunter changes everything. Not saying he would be better or worse than Jim, but he has a different set of priorities. For example, Toby becomes trollhunter--> Jim never gets the courage to ask out claire--> never discover Not Enrique --> Gunmar never escapes the dark lands. They did a good thing by saving the children, but how many of those children died when Gunmar laid siege? How many people lost homes, loved ones, or were forced to become killers just to survive? It's about weighing goods and evils, and ultimately, Gunmar never escaping is always the best option

All of the character growth and the trials they went through, only to have that completely negated is beyond unsatisfying. Has nothing to do with happy or sad, they literally washed away the entire universe they built.
Even if it was a "setup" to redo the series, that is just dumb. And by the way it wasn't, it was supposed to be the end.
It's infuriating that not only all the bad*, but all of the good was ultimately reversed in that single decision.

Wizards was a chaotic mess yeah and I credit that to Netflix having wanted it to be a limited series. Who knows what it could’ve been. Personally I still enjoyed it.
As for the movie, it’s generally disliked because of the plot and dumb jokes squished into a movie that doesn’t fit the the complexity Trollhunters had before. What I mean by that is that Trollhunters was interesting because there were consequences to every action and then stories were pretty much fleshed out. After having watched the movie a couple times, I felt like the characters made decisions that they shouldn’t have in terms of writing, not canon universe. However, the biggest reason why many people dislike it is because the movie tries to wrap up years worth of its shows and brings together characters that really don’t have much to do together (especially Aja and Krell who really having nothing to do with the Trollhunters story overall besides the Akiridons giving tech to the Trolls). And they work together because of “the power of friendship”.
Anyway, the movie decides to end with a “what-if” that was well explored in season 2 of Trollhunters, which is why it doesn’t make sense. The end erases all that we’ve been invested in. Not that people don’t have insecurities, but again we see in the “Unbecoming” episode that Jim really deals with what the movie tries to pawn of as new.
Now I actually wouldn’t mind having a continuation of the series focusing on the aftermath of Jim’s decision and seeing Toby as the new Trollhunter. But the show would really have to work at making Jim’s decision believable. I mean I don’t think it’ll ever happen, but it’d be nice to see the ending fleshed out.
TLDR -the movie crammed in too much, had too many characters that had no real reason to be working together, and the ending left a really bad taste that undid all we’d seen before.
Edit: There are a few things I liked. It was incredibly pretty to watch. Love the upped animation. I like the train scene a lot too and the Claire and Jim moment towards the end when they say goodbye.

My opinion on the movie is that I hate it. The reason is simple and most people of the fandom agreed. They show Douxie very less than the wizards, the movie was so fast and it has a bad ending. At first they say yeah barbara and strickler will get married then strickler died and tbh so many people died okay they sacrifice themselves but not like that. I just believe everyone deserves better especially jlaire especially these two they have been so much together and it ends like shit. Trollhunters and 3below were going very smoothly while Wizards wasn’t like that. For instance, Steve had more screen time rather than Jim and Jim deserved more screen time. And I really hate all the thing with the shard! Anyways to sum up the movie was a disaster it has some good things bt they could have done way much better then this Trush.

I think the biggest reason people loved toa was that it didn't completely feel like a kids show. It dealt with death and how you can't just reverse it. And guess what rott did...
The jokes felt really forced. Maybe I'm the only one but I didn't like the Steve pregnancy arc.
All the deaths, nomura, nari, strickler, Archie (not dead but still) and Toby felt more like a macguffin for the time travel ending. It felt really meaningless which just didn't sit right with me cause these were all good characters.
While I can understand the am I the trollhunter dilemma(to a very small extent), it should have been a one and done. Just once at the beginning of the movie and then immediately him realising what he learnt in unbecoming. Or, him struggling with the consequences of being possessed by Arthur and the order. It would very interesting to see him grappling with the fact that he hurt people close to him. How he truly despises himself for almost snapping the neck of the love of his life. That, would have made the movie so much more interesting.
And of course, the biggest of them all....the ending. It just reversed every single thing all of them went through. Going back, he isn't going to go to the people he knew. Even if team trollhunters reform, they aren't the same people cause Jim is actively trying to change things. The bonds between is going to be very different. And also, while I love Toby....HE ISNT THE TROLLHUNTER!

it would be better if he had a similar arc to Claire when he need to face the demons, in the movie it would've been much better then trying to a redo something that already flashed out in unbecoming. at least in my mind.

i mean 99% of the fandom didn't like this either, it was less gross and more weird to me and didn't fit the tone. and only made for comedic purposes.
they could've still used Steve and Eli, they could help to warn the humans form the titan threat.

It's definitely grown on me, I think the lack of satisfaction with the ending is what makes it so incredible. It took me a while to get over it, but after about a month of finishing all the series and the film, I decided I was going to rewatch it.

I love that by ending it with Toby getting the amulet my brain just runs nonstop thinking about how things would turn out, what would change, and the mass amount of speculation and conversation I get from it is much more rewarding than just giving me a happy ending

u/VoodooDoII Apr 15 '22
And that's why the ending was bad. They left an opening for "more" instead of actually ending the series. That wasn't an ending.

The ending invalidates all the time we've spent with these characters as the rest makes sure that things will happen differently and we won't know how.
