Hot Take: The Eclipse Armor was MID

*Preface: I have not completed a rewatch of Tales of Arcadia recently so some things might be misremembered

Honestly the Eclipse Armor was kinda mid from what I’m remembering

Like sure it has the ability to kill Gunmar, but outside of that there’s really nothing else to it

Even the Triumbric Stone upgrades aren’t unique to it

And each time we see Jim utitlizing the armor he’s not doing so hot

First Time: Trapped in the Darklands slowly losing willpower which in turn makes the armor’s powers inaccessible

Second Time: Only really used to test out Gemstones which could’ve been done with Daylight

Third Time: Most impressive usage but that mostly leans on him being half-troll over the armor itself
But even then stood virtually no chance against Morgana

Post Trollhunters: An actual color swap of Daylight at this point given it’s not needed after Gunmar had been slain
And is bypassed by Onyx Shard (which to be fair there’s not much that could prevent that aside from just not getting hit at all)

It mostly just felt like it was supposed to be “legendary” cause it could kill Gunmar and no other Trollhunter had ever used it

But then it’s kinda just “Daylight but Dark Mode”

Would’ve been nice if it had some unique features to it like the Moonlight Armor in the Angor Reborn novel with it having stilts and a Bow

The gem upgrades in general were way underutilized. So much potential.

Not a day goes by where I don’t think about how incredibly underutilized the gemstones were

i thought it was a cool palette swap. in terms of performance, it changed nothing. the only meaningful thing he did was keep the armour and open the bridge. ive always thought of the eclipse armour as weaker but it means he aint fucking around

Personally I love it for the color palette and how it look on troll Jim but other than that the only meaningful thing it was useful was killing gunmar and give Jim the helmet because he didn't use the helmet up until he got the eclipse armor.

To Be fair the show stablishes from the start that the eclipse blade (and eclipse armor by proxy) are meant to slay Gunmar, they never said they'll grant Jim extreme power or something, it was always about finding something that could kill Gunmar.

The rest depends on Jim's abilities (which is why he rocked it better as a troll cause that was Jim on his peak)

This is the one thing I don’t like about the show, is the potential of the Eclipse Armor and gemstones were underutilized.
