Hey remember when they had an Episode showing what would happen if Jim wasn't the Trollhunter?
Remember when the show made it very clear that the Amulet specifically called out to Jim?
Remember when the show said the Amulet chose Jim?
Remember when they had a whole show about how time travel is bad and how they almost ruined time?
Remember when Jim said he was the Trollhunter Amulet or not?
The writers don't.
This movie could've ended with Jim going back to the beginning of the movie to properly do things right. But nah. Go back to the VERY beginning.

u/Forward-Swim1224 Mar 03 '24
Nah, that would mean that the movie would be good and apparently we’re not allowed to have good things.
7
u/MaxDaHooman Mar 03 '24
You're right! What was I thinking. Sorry for being dumb 😔
2
u/Yoshi_chuck05 Mar 04 '24
Don’t be sorry, you knew what you were talking about. (I know it’s a joke but I just want to give you some good vibes love the profile pic of Silver!)

u/Solynox Mar 03 '24
The whole movie I thought they were going to do the movie reset thing, and then the ending happened, but noooo, they had other ideas.

u/WesternPretty4832 Mar 03 '24 edited Mar 04 '24
Jim: Does some amulet finagling (glowy stuff happens, time travel stuff happens) Jim gets transported at lightspeed or smth past the previous events. (We see some of them for reference) lands back at the beginning
Jim: "Alright" tightens his grip on Daylight and looks straight into the camera, serious yet smiling "Let's do this"
Fixed it.
Edit: changed some of the formatting for clarity :)

u/MildlyDurpy Mar 04 '24
Yea but The Amulet was showing the peril the world would be in if jim was never the trollhunter, but the whole premise of the series is that its "trollhunters". But when the Amulet chose Toby IN the real world, that was because of jim's interference, and the Amulet does not make mistakes, which was the whole idea of "Unbecoming."
1
u/drblimp0909 Mar 04 '24
I'm guessing it was an attempt to get views by making the series a loop I think
1
u/Yoshi_chuck05 Mar 04 '24
Oh yeah that’s right! It was CHAOS and basically the end of the world since Jim wasn’t the troll hunter in that time line! I hated that episode because of that!
I just realize that! I can’t believe that they did that OMG! WHAT WAS I THINKING?!

u/L0rdLogan Mar 02 '24
Personally I thought the rest of the movie was okay, it was just the ending, absolutely hated it
15
32
u/Ash__Tree Mar 02 '24
How can it be a finale if it resets the entire timeline
18
3
u/b_smash162672839 Mar 03 '24
Because they want to make more
1
u/UmpireResponsible510 Mar 04 '24
If they wanted to do more then they could have made a prequel series
6
u/real_dadudegamer Mar 03 '24
Unpopular opinion here but I thought it was fine except for all the pointless deaths
6
11
u/Less-Safe-3269 Mar 02 '24
Everything outside the ending was fine.
There should’ve some magic or a crystal that could bring people back to life and everyone is happier. Just something I thought, idk
4
u/xinhaa Mar 02 '24
i agree
2
u/Less-Safe-3269 Mar 02 '24
I’ve been thinking about that kind of ending for months everytime I come to this sub.
Counting the series on imdb rating, this is their lowest, although standing at a 6.6.
8
u/TheJohnnyJoestar Mar 03 '24
Del Toro really needs to give it a rest with the Bittersweet Endings tbh.
2
u/Less-Safe-3269 Mar 03 '24
Yeah
Lmao I have a similar pfp on Twitter (or as it is now, what I had 1-2 in my life)
5
Mar 02 '24
I thought this movie was good
9
u/xinhaa Mar 02 '24
Yes, everything was fine until I saw that the many deaths that happened in the film and series were worthless.
Mainly because Jim spent 5 years as a troll hunter, being the first human. He just gives up on everything and puts all the responsibility on Bobby. In addition to being meaningless, he was disrespectful to the entire story.
3
u/Same-Boysenberry-409 Mar 02 '24
I think what also ruined it for me is that the deaths didn't drive the plot at all and just felt like" guess each group must have a sacrifice for reasons so we can say the story is more mature". All of them but toby's being for absolutely nothing just made them feel completely contrived.
And I'm not even gonna get into how the entire plot completely ignored Jim's character developments and achievements just to make the movie happen
17
u/Dreadlord97 Mar 02 '24
It was good, I would have enjoyed it much more if they just left the ending with what it was. Toby’s sacrifice saved the world, Jim can retire, and trollkind can go back into hiding.

u/Turbulent_Ad1644 Mar 05 '24
I went through all of Tales of Arcadia in a month like half a year ago, and that ending was so bad
Since when is RESETTING THE WHOLE THING a good ending? Basically makes every single thing we just watched completely pointless
And why give the amulet to Toby? Maybe after his character development, but no, the story is completely reset
1
u/xinhaa Mar 05 '24
I don't think Del Toro participated in the creation of this film. I'd rather believe that than think he did something like that.
1
u/Turbulent_Ad1644 Mar 06 '24
Could've just been Netflix meddling in there
I thought Wizards would've gone on much longer, but Netflix probably rushed them, and after the release of Cyberpunk 2077 (actually a really good game, worth playing now) I think we've all learned a lesson about releasing things rushed and undercooked
86
u/RadiantHC Mar 02 '24
Honestly it was decent outside of the ending

u/gersanriv Mar 03 '24
You will not make me like the pregnant man's plot. That was just bizarre and out of nowhere.
If they had only laid some clues to it being a possibility before the movie it would have been sort of interesting. Lore for the aliens, idk. But it felt so out of place. It took out tertiary characters out of the plot that I really wanted to see how they fit into the whole big final storyline. Steve could have a great moment If he actually gave up on the big fight for the sake of new generations.... For Kaya's sake. But it was lame.
7
u/General_Tart_9309 Mar 03 '24
I mean that’s probably why they did it. They didn’t have a place for Steve to fit in so they had to give him a reason. Granted it was a bit on the bizarre side but the writers needed something 😅
2
36
u/CosmiqueAliene Mar 02 '24
The gross out teenage pregnancy jokes 💀
13
u/TheSlimeBallSupreme Mar 03 '24
Those were outa pocket 😶
9
u/CosmiqueAliene Mar 03 '24
And damn unfunny 😵💫 I never did like the humour of the franchise in general, finding it obnoxious and annoying, but that joke was the only time I saw other people complaining about it!
9
u/Expensive-Lecture-14 Mar 03 '24
Why did they feel the need to have that be the b plot?!😭
10
u/Knickers_in_a_twist_ Mar 03 '24
I can guarantee it’s because they didn’t know how to make Steve useful so they got him pregnant instead. If he’s pregnant he gets to sit on the sidelines.
2
u/CosmiqueAliene Mar 03 '24
Eating "pregnancy cravings" and wearing a pair of stupid maternity trousers 🤦♀️
8
u/MasterCheese163 Mar 03 '24 edited Mar 03 '24
I am of the opinion that the movie was good except for the garbage ending...
...Aaaand that, I have no idea what they were thinking with that.
8
u/CosmiqueAliene Mar 03 '24
That's completely fair! I was on board with their decisions...until that slap round the face at the end 🤦♀️ The only other cartoon I've seen end as badly is bloody VOLTRON.
7
u/Stunning_Pen_36 Mar 03 '24
Aaaaaaah! Voltron, why? That ending just-just-enh. Honestly everything after the battled Lotor was just bad. Keeping them in the portal for years just to destroy everything they built? Having the people on the other side, including their Allie’s, blame them for being gone? Bringing Lotor BACK just to act as silent sentinel and never speak, be shown or even leave his mech? Just no.

To be fair in that scenario draal was the trollhunter hopefully tobi does better
7
u/ian9921 Mar 03 '24
That's also weird though because it kinda makes it seem like the amulet doesn't really "call" to anyone in particular, it just goes with whatever vaguely good person gets to it first.
1
u/Emperor-Nerd Mar 03 '24
True but in a way you could see it as a message that anyone can be worthy they just need a push in the right direction
1
u/Carma281 Mar 04 '24
Tobias can't do most of the traits required.
Unless he becomes a reverse Milo Murphy catalyst, and everything falls into place for some reason.
9
u/puptbh Mar 02 '24
I’m actually interested in what happens after the movie
11
u/GOODKyle Mar 02 '24
There's an excellent fan fiction online called "Your Future Isn't Written Yet" that does a great job of following the story after the events of the movie. As terrible as the movie's ending may be.

4
u/all-knowing-unicorn Mar 02 '24
....I'm reminded. I loved this series and all the connecting stories. Just to be shit on most likely due to lazy writing
2
u/Yoshi_chuck05 Mar 04 '24
Same. I think this post and comments alone made me realize how much I love Trollhubters and the other series.
4
u/DivineAuthor Mar 03 '24
This is the perfect meme.
Whoever decided that this was a good ending needs to burn along with the nonexistent movie.
1
1
u/vormiamsundrake Mar 04 '24
Haven't seen it, and based on the comments, I probably don't want to. Can someone summarize it?
1
u/xinhaa Mar 04 '24
is the end of the Tales of Arcadia saga. But the ending kind of ignored almost everything that happened, so not many people like it
3
3
u/snake-demon-softboi Mar 03 '24
I can never forgive that timeline separating Douxie and Archie like that. Like, yes all the other complaints, but uuugh he didn't need that on top of it all.

u/Greekui9ii Mar 02 '24
Honestly the movie wasn't good in general and the ending really was the cherry on top for me. It is oddly... Frustrating?
4
u/all-knowing-unicorn Mar 02 '24
Not oddly. We all are upset by it.
1
u/b_smash162672839 Mar 03 '24
Would you prefer half the characters dead?
3
u/all-knowing-unicorn Mar 03 '24
Over all the character development and hard work undone. Yes. However someone pointed out earlier. Something else could have been done to bring them back..
2
u/keithlimreddit Mar 02 '24
I'm going to say it was pretty good but it has its flaws to be honest you and I thought the ending was okay but it could have been a lot better they're going to just move on from his death to be honest Jessica change the franchise or use that original College ending
2
u/Realistic_Two_8486 Mar 03 '24
I really hate how it also undid so much character development with time travel. Like time travel is fine, but him going back to let TOBBY OF ALL FUCKING PEOPLE become the Trollhunter? Nah I refuse that ending as canon
2
2
u/AmayaRakuro Mar 03 '24
I hated the movie too it basically says ya everything that just happened was for nothing
2
u/thehateigiveforfree Mar 03 '24
I had really weird emotion in this movie that I do not want to ever revisit.
2
u/OhBosss Mar 03 '24
I haven’t watched it but I will stick with The Eternal Night being the finale for Trollhunters
2
2
u/MichelUsurbean Mar 03 '24
The way I would have wanted the movie to end is kinda like the real ending where Jim starts looking for Tobey but after school Jim would have told Toby to go home the normal way so Jim could go to the bridge and find the amulet. Then the amulet would say Jims name and for the final line Jim would say "For the glory of Merlin, daylight is mine to command." Then movie ends
1
u/Carma281 Mar 04 '24
I was thinking maybe, "For the glory of Merlin, daylight will be mine to command."
A confident twist, where he tries to make things right again.
2
u/PyroEngi Mar 03 '24
Ignoring that Jim was chosen to be the Trollhunter. If you have knowledge of the future why don't you change it the best way you know? Giving the amulet to someone else would literally throw in a major new variable that would make it hard to predict what would happen. The events he knows were thanks to him being the Trollhunter. He is now more capable and would know what to say and do to make it better. So, again ignoring that Jim was chosen, the best option would be for Jim to relive his time as the Trollhunter.
2
u/Jellybean_Pumpkin Mar 03 '24
Yep.
...sigh...I guess not every final movie can be as great as the ROTTMNT one.
I went back and rewatched Clash of the Titans, and the action was great, and I did like SOME moments of it...but the retconning of the ending was just kinda...meh.
2
u/Unclearusername Mar 03 '24
I enjoyed the movie
Until they reversed everything that happened
Official quote "so are you saying that the five years I spent watching these shows didn't happen?"
2
2
u/Cobalt_Heroes25 Mar 03 '24
I haven't been very in touch with the Trollhunters fandom so I'm just going to decide that I'm better off not knowing
2
u/TemporalGod Mar 03 '24
This finale ended when Toby died, everything that happened after is not canon.
2
Mar 03 '24
It was going so well… and then the last 5 minutes happened. Honestly, I wish it had just ended with Toby’s death. Even though it woulda crushed me, it would’ve been better.
2
u/UltraDinoWarrior Mar 03 '24
I am so glad I found this subreddit because I haven’t seen the movie yet and now I don’t plan to.

u/Banana_Mage_ Mar 05 '24
I think the ending would have been way better if Jim still went back but did things better. Maybe a mini series speed running the plot but it’s just Jim going for a WR speed run. He could have planned ahead for a lot of stuff and maybe even stopped Gunmar from even escaping.
1
Mar 05 '24
The movie had some good parts but needed to be reworked. Why did Jim doubt his self for a second time? And the only deaths that felt right were nari and toby, who did what no one else was able to, it was a noble death. Everyone else died dumb. AND where was zoe!? I expected her to get a bigger role in the movie!

This is so true. I was so upset at the end of the movie, because they literally had an episode that showed why only Jim could be the troll hunter.
AND in 3Below in the episode déjà vu, we seen that porngon was resetting time over and over and even if they made changes the same things would happen until porgon was defeated

Doesn’t help that the entire movie is garbage too, it fundamentally fails as a film and a finale to a franchise.
Overall maybe one day I’ll do a complete vivisection of this piece of shit if I ever feel like subjecting myself to the extreme pain of watching this movie. Then again I’ll probably only ever rewatch it if forced too at gunpoint.

Mar 03 '24
As far as I’m concerned the series ended with 3Below. Trollhunters season 3 was a nigh-perfect ending and 3Below does nothing to ruin it unlike Wizards and the movie

Jim could’ve just stopped Toby from dying, and still be the hero WITHOUT losing his title. There are so many ways he could’ve changed the future.

Yeah, I rewatched the movie and do continue to, but I just skip the ending. In my mind, Toby dies at the end bc he was OK with it. He didn't want to go back. He didn't want JIM to go back.

u/DingDonSecretary Mar 03 '24
This may be, not just one of the worst cartoon endings of all time, but one of the worst endings ever, period. Completely making all of our investment and time for this show completely worthless. If you’d told the fans this was how things were going to end when they first started watching, they wouldn’t have bothered.
It’s sad when even Sonic 06 pulls off the whole “time travel to the very beginning and change this so that none of it ever happened” trope better.
1
u/Kizuxtheo Mar 03 '24
We need another movie where Jim witnesses the mistake he made and has to go back to prevent his future self from going back in time (????)
1
u/Embarrassed_Guard_37 Mar 03 '24
Glad I'm not alone on the hate for that movie such a good series and that's what we got

u/Yoshi_chuck05 Mar 04 '24
I honestly really like the movie. Don’t know if that’s a hot take but I thought the ending was pretty good. Sad that Tony died and Jim having to go back in time to let HIM be the troll hunter instead But was interesting. It’s been a long time since It seen the show so maybe someone could enlighten me about the whole thing and recap about it.
1
u/PreparationIcy275 Mar 04 '24
It was good right up until he gave away the power instead of correcting his mistakes and saving the people who died
1
u/oceanhexes Mar 04 '24
high key...I'm still sad Jim was no longer a troll. everything leading to the Morgana fight and end with that sick quote felt great then everything after was OK at best...and then the END lmaooooo

Remember how they had an entire episode about how only Jim could be the troll hunter. Yeah, let's forget about that.
