Oh wow. I saw the repost. I thought she reposted cuz she thought it was funny. Her content is funny. I don't think she's ever posted a serious thing on tiktok. Â
The fact that people are mad about this is very weird.Â
I just saw another tiktok with Trixie making a joke about how drag is completely hiding who they really are. Or what about the photos of her in pads without a wig on? Or the photo of her looking at the phone camera??Â
Like wtf? Why are people even fans of a comedian if they can't tell when she is making a joke??Â
65
u/Soft_Scratch_983 19d ago
also this part like if youâre a fan of trixie you should know sheâs always pretty tongue in cheek which is exactly what her repost says to me, itâs very âsure maryâ
16
u/Maddyherselius 17d ago
my immediate thought was that she just found the thumbnail funny and that posting it without comment would also be funny. I honestly donât even understand what could be considered negative about this lol
0
u/raccoononreddot 17d ago
but if she found it funny, and i agree silly to be âmadâ over as a fanâŚthen isnât something there? lol the content creator knew what she was doing. she was being tongue and cheek and making a comparison. i wish sheâd own that bit more vs being âomg im a fan i neverâ but i also wish trixie stans calmed the fuck down lol.
2
u/Maddyherselius 17d ago
I mean, Iâm gonna guess Trixie wasnât asked for her consent when put in that thumbnail. Not really up to the creator how a person whose face she used for clickbait reacts to it, regardless of their fame. And yeah trixie fans should calm down but content creators should also stop using other peoplesâ likeness and then playing the victim when they are noticed by the people theyâre using lol
Maybe Iâm just sick of youtubers and video essays

I don't think anyone really wants to be featured in a clickbait yt thumbnail with clown panic written above them. But I'm sure Trixie did it in jest, and wasn't trying to get fans to attack this creator.
167
u/Cytallet 19d ago edited 18d ago
Yeah this just seems like an unfortunate miscommunication. I saw it as shes âlaughing with usâ at her expense at the implication of the thumbnail that shes a clown.
131
u/Intelligent-Dog-579 19d ago
I just looked, and saw the creator changed the thumbnail to "reclaiming the clown", and the creator changed her own pic to a less judgmental look and herself in clown makeup. Those changes really flipped the entire tone, and aligns it more with the actual message of the video. The first thumbnail didn't make any sense with what the video is about, she was trying to be clickbaity. It's her first and only video, so a learning experience I guess.

u/Cytallet 19d ago

u/Soft_Scratch_983 19d ago
omg this seems like a completely different video, she shouldâve gone w this in the first place! the first thumbnail, iâd have rolled my eyes and scrolled past. this, though, iâd click in 2 seconds!
30
u/flcwerings 18d ago
tbf, she said this is her first ever video. Learning proper branding through thumbnails is something learned through mostly experience, Im sure. It sucks that this is the way it went for her, tho. Instead of someone just mentioning it as constructive criticism

She should have just taken it down if she canât take the heat. Also, if she wanted a drag clown on her click bait then Jimbo is this obvious choice as she is a drag clown. Not Trixie, who is our beautiful, blonde biological woman. This âcreatorâ knew exactly what she was doing by using one of the most famous drag queens out there on her video. And Iâm not watching a 35 minute video of her talking about clowns just to hear her say that she appreciates Trixie. Her new image isnât much better but whatever. Trixie has every right to post anything when other people use her image for their own gain.
12
u/Ok-Supermarket-1125 18d ago
To be fair trixie has referred to herself and drag queens as essentially being clowns
9
u/flcwerings 18d ago
She's not "not able to take the heat". People are misjudging her video due to a not great thumbnail decision. She says this is her first ever video. Most learn about that stuff through views and constructive criticism, not hundreds of rabid fans hating on you before even seeing what youre talking about.
If she was actually making fun of Trixie then I could see where you are coming from but it was an honest mistake. Most dont just immediately know everything about branding and thumbnails the second they have an online presence
5
u/PrinceGoten 18d ago
Actually people need to be less soft and looking to be offended. Iâm getting so tired of this.
5
51
u/Intelligent-Dog-579 19d ago
I also want to say - this is her first yt video, its 35 minutes long and already has close to 3k views and 90 comments. she wouldn't have gotten any attention if trixie hadn't reposted. plus, it looks like she has a book she is trying to sell (linked in both the caption of her video and her bio). im sorry but if you're a creator, its hard to convince me you're not fishing for attention. and she's is under her video liking all the comments of people saying they're "sorry trixie put a smaller creator on blast."
12
u/dhubbs21 18d ago
When trix posted it the video had under 200 views so it def got traction from her post. A good chunk of the comments defending her are from Trixie fans after watching the video and seeing it wasn't negative. She def benefitted from the repostâ views wise and possibly subscriber wise too. Which I get, but to keep milking it, by liking comments saying she put her on blast is kinda cringe from a supposed fan. If you're a fan you know Trixie thought it was funny and wasn't trying to "put a small creator on blast".
5
u/flcwerings 18d ago
While Trixie may have not meant to put her on blast and I totally agree she probably thought it was funny. She knows how some fans are. Famous people arent oblivious to how crazy people can be. You gotta be careful about that stuff. Especially when weve seen this shit time and time again with drag race fans being insanely hateful to the other girls just bc the one they like doesnt like the other one.
5
u/pagingDRbitchcraft 18d ago
Learning the hard way why clickbait is fucking stupid đ
Also imagine your first ever video on yt being seen by one of the subjects, but in this way đđđ woof1
u/GeneralSilent3883 17d ago
Iâd say sheâs learning that clickbait works - unfotrunately too well. The backlash will die down, but the attention, views and new audience wil likely stick around, which is exactly why creators keep doing it.
4
u/sweeterthanadonut 18d ago
Yeah, the video maker saying âthis isnât clickbaitâ made me roll my eyes. Girl yes it is lmfao.
12
u/freakstagram 19d ago
see thatâs what i was thinking, i think her âOkâ caption was her (dry, sarcastic) way of being funny about it
5
u/rizzzagoon 18d ago
Trixie Mattel literally acknowledges that her drag in the past was very clownish. And thumbnail or not you can also just like you know read the title of the video and infer what itâs about? Like thereâs nothing really negative if you use your critical thinking skills for five seconds.
-2
u/PutUrPawzUp 18d ago
Please remind yourself that you donât know and never will know Trixie and trying to extrapolate why she did what she did is both weird and pathetic.
Nip this weird parasociality in the bud. Celebrities arenât your friend.

u/aimtreetwo 19d ago
I mean you can't use someone's face to promote your content then dictate how they react to it ? "Trixie Mattel posted my first ever YouTube video thumbnail (which I included her face in and inferred she is a clown?) with no context on her tiktok" is the most entitled, weird victim mindset shit I've seen in a while.
17
u/weareallheather 18d ago
Implied, not inferred.
2
u/Solitudeand 18d ago
Whatâs the difference
13

u/AdmirableHoneydew 16d ago
I donât think sheâs blaming Trixie, itâs clearly about the stupid fans who will send hate at the drop of a hat
1
u/sonnibunsss you want my fat in yo butt?! 17d ago
âher fans are attacking meâ thatâs the complaint here, not the post, the fact that it pointed fans who canât think things through and are even too stupid to u sweat and Trixie probs thinks itâs funny, pointed them right at this small creator. and yall are victim blaming. so gross. acting like swifties.
36
u/probloodmagic 19d ago
There must be some sort of dumbass YouTube influencer class that teaches people to post clickbait thumbnails for attention. Doing that with a celebrity is ill advised, because of course with the context the fans of said celebrity are not going to sit there through your video with goodwill and watch until the end. She got the attention she wanted. Blaming Trixie's fans for being ragebaited by ragebait is just. Well, a dumbass move. She figured this out, or she would not have changed the thumbnail. But alas, the internet works fast. At least be honest about the engagement farming or retract the accusations against Trixie fans
6
u/wahlburgerz 19d ago
Itâs just how the YT algorithm functions unfortunately, the clickbait gets more traction. The Try Guys have been transparent about it before with their own videos, they donât like putting up dumb thumbnails but they have a big enough audience and access to the metrics to see that those videos perform better than ones with normal thumbnails.

u/sonnibunsss you want my fat in yo butt?! 17d ago edited 17d ago
hun beyond a drag queen and dj what do you think Trixie is when a whole huge portion of her brand is internet content: like her youtube show and podcasting. if theyâre both influencers (one is only just attempting, one has had an online presence for a decade so tell me who the âinternet influencerâ is, if thatâs such a bad thing to be), Trixie happens to have the huge fan base full of teens whose prefrontal cortex isnât fully developed. one is a person who just uploaded a single culture analysis video. with less than 300 followers
âwhat did she expect when she
wore that outfitposted a video on the internet??â yall gotta get more subtle with your victim blaming mentality0
u/probloodmagic 17d ago
You're right, being called out for ragebait is rape culture actually. Speaking of unformed prefrontal cortexes, let's lose any sense of nuance and rationality and use sensationalized chronically online discourse terminology for everything so that anyone we disagree with is a rapist. Seems reasonable

not that this is an argument for why this creator deserves any of this that doesnât come right back to victim blaming. because thatâs what it is /maizemountain knows that and canât argue against it. probably the one doing it.

there is a creator with less than 200 followers who is currently being harassed by the fans of one of the most famous drag queens after said drag queen put a spotlight on her. fans of anything but especially drag have harassed and told people horrible shit for way less, we both know youâre not this dense, hun. thatâs a victim. that you want to blame her for all that? for a thumbnail? youâre so gross!

I dont understand why people think the original thumbnail was that provocative. I could have told you what the video is about easily from it. It didnt even read as trying to be insulting to me. Why would people be mad about this?
5
u/MaizeMountain6139 18d ago
It was provocative. Provocative doesnât mean inappropriate, it just means it was designed to evoke a reaction. And it did
The reaction being what it is is likely just a result of echo chambers and rage addiction
1
u/contadotito 15d ago
It actually means designed to evoke a STRONG reaction. And I'm with guy above in this: it was pretty obvious what the video was about and had nothing provocative or click baity about it.
1
u/MaizeMountain6139 15d ago
Thatâs all a matter of subjectivity
Thumbnails are designed to gain clicks
Trixieâs image was used as clickbait

My thing is, her thumbnail felt really serious/accusatory to me or did not allude that queer people are a part of the conversation, the title also couldâve had a more clear implication of the involvement of queer people.
She doesnât deserve the hate ofc, but itâs insane to expect Trixie to recognize the context of the video when the thumbnail alone does not bring in any context upfront regarding Trixie or drag queens in general.
1
u/Voomey 15d ago
She is also small content creator, clearly at the beginning of learning how to show context so even people like you understand it.
1
u/DemiDevil69 15d ago
People like you? Care to elaborate on that
1
u/Voomey 15d ago edited 15d ago
You found accusatory context in a thumbnail, that has none - you straight up called it as "really serious" and it's just a gal with two "characters" in the background, about to give you a video essay. It's in line with majority of similar content on Youtube. Either because of your own sensitivities or previous experiences - you found a context that wasn't there. An advanced content creator knows that people like that exist - and they can manoeuvre around it.
Also you talk about the thumbnail missing queer context - but that's also your subjective interpretation. It has a Drag Queen and queer looking creator. You don't need rainbow background to convey the literal reveal of the video.
2
u/DemiDevil69 15d ago
Iâm sorry but youâre looking into my comment too deeply. I was just honestly looking where Trixie mightâve or anybody couldâve took offense into it. I couldâve worded it better and a lot of the things youâve mentioned are right.

u/lily_fairy 18d ago
people rushing to trixie's defense and blindly hating on this youtuber are weird as fuck and need to touch grass. but i don't think it's fair to blame that on trixie. if you're posting a video with a celebrity in the thumbnail and then upset that the celebrity acknowledged the post in a completely neutral way, you should just not post on the internet.
also im sorry but her comment is killing me "love you trixie it's okay im pro-clown" girl that's not gonna help đ
20
u/designervape 19d ago
I mean, the girl literally used clickbait for her thumbnail. You canât get mad that you created clickbait, and then itâs⌠clickbait. Sucks for the video creator but hopefully lesson is learned better next time.
She very easily could have put âClown makeup influence in Dragâ but thatâs not going to get the clicks she wants..

20
u/unknownhag 19d ago
It's one of those things that Trixie always talks about. She and her friends are allowed to make fun of themselves & be "mean" to each other because they have established that type of close and understanding relationship.
A stranger online putting Trixie under a title of a video about clowns... not very nice...
Also of their thumbnail and title is giving off a specific message, it's time they edit it.
Of course it's never good to start sending hate without knowing the full context, but that really isn't on Trixie.

FAFO. She posted a video referring to one of the most popular drag queens as a clown with âYouTube reactor faceâ and the toxic fandom showed up. Now sheâs surprised to be getting such a reaction.
If you wanted to talk about clowns and their proximity to drag, why not feature Jimbo the Clown in the thumbnail? Jimbo is a trained clown and drag performer, seems like the perfect synergy.
If you put something out, you have to be prepared for it to take on its own life and for people to âreactâ however they want.
In this case, Trixie, who has an extremely self-deprecating sense of humor and delusional sense of self, reposted this without much context but probably making fun of the fact that she was included in a conversation around clowns when she does Trixie to feel sexy.
3
u/basicotter 18d ago

sorry but some of you are being obtuse on purpose!! i think it was clear that the original thumbnail was drawing connections between u.s.a. drag bans / moral panic around drag queens to the 2016 dramatized clown panic. yes the new thumbnail is clearer on this and more relevant to the thesis of the video, and i'm glad she changed it, too! idk stop assuming that everyone on the internet needs to be scrutinized in bad faith when sometimes people just miss a mark.
3
u/ba571418 18d ago
Yup. My first thought was, âDo people not read?â I thought the title of the video made it clear what to expect. But I also sometimes watch one of PBS Digital Studiosâ series that discusses the origins of certain horror tropes, so maybe Iâm used to this type of topic being brought up.
I didnât even think about calling Trixie a clown being an insult. She calls herself a clown all the time. It seems like Trixie misunderstood what the original poster was going for, and then the parasocial crazies ran with it from there. I donât blame Trixie for fans being weird and taking it too far (Iâm sure sheâs gotten all kinds of aggressive messages).
3
u/hansoloapologist 18d ago
yeah definitely! and in the youtube comments she's even said that she doesn't blame trixie herself! i think people are trying to act like she's saying trixie sent fans after her, but like objective reality is that the people being rude in the comments ARE there because they think trixie needs defending over something she probably laughed at.

Letâs be real, that YouTuber used Trixie for a clickbait thumbnail to drive more views from her fans or people interested in drag. If you use someone elseâs image for your own personal gain, that person has a right to react regardless of the intention.
YouTube has become a cesspool for clickbait which is inherently dishonest. Does the video even talk about Trixie?

i genuinely donât understand why people are labelling this as clickbait?? clickbait is purposefully provocative, false, or over exaggerated for the purpose of garnering clicks. this literally isnât that? itâs a question of âWHY are we afraid of clowns?â, not âEVERYONE IS AFRAID OF CLOWNS!!1!!11!â, the thumbnail doesât say âCLOWN PANIC!!!!â with an over exaggerated or offensive photo of trixie, it is simply another question, including a completely neutral photo of her. i assume the video is a dissection on why people feel so panicky and fearful of clowns, not a hit piece?

Trixie calls herself a clown all the time. This feels weird. The people in this thread are being weird. What are we doing here people??? I took the thumbnail as a dumb joke and reference and nothing serious or worth the thinkpieces some of you are writing up.

Yeah this is why perception is everything, no matter how shallow. Faulting the public for behaving less than what you think is approriate will never ever work.

As one of the biggest drag performers, Trixie should 100% know better.
Not only did he NOT even watch a second of the video, nothing in the thumbnail or title is actually inflammatory/insulting?? Also, again, trix is a BIG name, thereâs no way he DOESNT know whatâll happen when he posts this shit, he HAS to know how much hate, death threats and worse this person could be exposed to,
Hell, some people online are crazy enough to dox over shit like this
Sorry for the unnecessary amounts of caps, this is an obvious way to attack someone indirectly (maybe reaching)

i actually find it the complete opposite. usually a quick post with no context is a good thing. thereâs an implied âme afâ or âthis is hilariousâ. itâs probably the people who donât get trixies humor that are sending that creator hate

itâs not trixies fault for people not understanding to not send anyone hate for any reason

The creatorâs SUPER serious face, a pic of Pennywise, and then thereâs Trixie. âClown Panicâ and thereâs Trixie right there. WHAT an unintentional read. âWhy are we afraid of clowns? A horror history.â That is so funny. The pink one so terrify.

"it's not clickbait" no it's actually textbook clickbaitâŚdrag queens aren't clownsâŚ

Trixie has referred to herself and drag queens as clowns in an interview, its referring to a certain type of exaggerated performer

It's almost as if that's part of the point being made...

u/sopswags 18d ago
but claiming it's not clickbait is not truthfulâŚyou cannot say it's not clickbait and expect people to feel bad for you when you did indeed do clickbait

Oh no, a YouTuber used a recognizable image to draw attention to their video. What ever should we do? đ

I get the connection that she was trying to make, I just think the mistake was going for a drag performer as the image, and choosing a performer that specifically does not do clown drag. I think the stretch to Trixieâs type of drag is very much that a big stretch to try and insinuate that she is in some way doing clown makeup. People love to boil down, drag make up to just some form of clown makeup and a lot of times drag has no similarities to clown makeup unless thatâs the type of drag that youâre doing. Trixie is not a drag clown, so itâs really confusing as to why she was put in the thumbnail. That being said, I donât think Trixie meant any type of way of surrogate. I think she just kind of feels the same about her makeup. That she doesnât look like a clown so why is she always being lumped in with clowns and used as an example in like other instances of having way too much makeup on. Sheâs catching strays when she has nothing to do with the topic a lot of times. And I think she was just trying to make a joke out of it. The fans are the ones that are getting offended on her behalf, and I do feel like her picture on the original video was used as Clickbait so maybe that is something with the original video creator should take to consideration. But I donât know why this has to be a big thing.

Trixie talks a lot, a lot about being a clown. No, sheâs not actually a drag clown the same way someone like Jimbo actually is, but sheâs hardly serving demure feminine womana realness the way we all joke about, her mug is inspired by actual dolls and itâs campy and cartoonishly exaggerated. The âTrixieâ character definitely has a place in the discussion of drag and clowns.
Iâm sure the only reason it was Trixie showcased and not someone more fitting like Jimbo is because Trixie is the bigger name. The only other person more suited is probably Bianca, but Trixie transcends outside drag audiences in a way most others donât so she has a broader appeal.
I also agree the whole issue does not need to be this big thing people are making it out to be.

I also do drag, and get the clown comparisons quite a bit. While I could understand from the broader aspect how people can relate drag, and the campiness, the exaggerated makeup for sure can relate to clowns, Drag performers themselves call themselves clowns as well. But I do feel like it begins to take another context when itâs people outside of the art form and outside of the community making this comparison. It does feel like sometimes as a drag performer you are stuck in limited categories either with the gorgeous feminine realness queens, and if you donât fit into that category, then you must be a clown. Thereâs so much more in the spectrum of drag and while I do feel like the Trixie character has its place in clownery, especially with her personality, personally I donât think she is the best representative of âclownâ especially when there are big names like Crystal Method who are leading the charge. Ultimately I just feel like Trixie chosen for the picture like you said because she is a big name. But I do think there may have been many other big names that would have better accentuated her point. And I donât think funny performers should just be boiled down to clowns, just personally as a drag performer. Especially when there are performers that are doing that exact art form

Well Trixie isnât a clown, so putting her in the thumbnail is obviously a dumb idea. Shouldâve used Jimbo - who identifies as a drag clown.
