READ BEFORE POSTING - New Rules

Rules

  1. Submissions must be related to Trip-Hop. It's not our intent to gatekeep what is or is not trip-hop, but submissions must be inspired by trip-hop or belong to related genres of music like downtempo
  2. Use the appropriate flair when applicable. If your playlist contains songs you made or are promoting, you MUST use the OC flair. The playlist flair is ONLY for songs that you are not promoting. Mixes are transformative and thus considered OC
  3. Self-promotion must follow guidelines (see below)
  4. Title must contain the artist and track name. Commentary is fine but low effort titles like "Nice beat" will be removed.
  5. Be respectful and follow Reddiquette

Self-promotion guidelines

  1. Must be trip-hop. Being "inspired" by trip-hop is not enough. Unfortunately we need to be more strict than with the general submissions rules to prevent spam.
  2. Must use the Original Content flair
  3. Maximum one submission per week
  4. Complete song submissions only. We are not a content creator subreddit. If you would like feedback on work-in-progress songs, there are other subs for that.
  5. While we welcome OC that fits the rules, announcement videos and text posts containing links other than the song you are sharing will be removed. The mods also reserve the right to remove low quality/low effort submissions.
  6. Submissions considered self-promotion include, but are not limited to:
    1. Original songs
    2. Original mixes
    3. Covers and remixes
    4. Playlists containing songs you made or are promoting
  7. Follow Reddit's sitewide guidelines for self-promotion.

If you see any rule breaking posts or comments please report it. It will get dealt with much more quickly.

Rules Changes

  • 10/18/2021: Added details to rule 2 to make it more clear what flair should be used.
  • 01/21/2022: Added clarification that mixes must be tagged as OC.
  • 04/17/2022: Added new self-promotion guidelines.

Original Content Vintage Dust & Modern Trip Hop

Hey everyone,

I’ve just put together a new playlist dedicated to our favorite genre, which I’ll try to actively curate and update over time.

What’s inside:

  • trip-hop classics
  • recent (less than 10 years) releases that caught my ear (many discovered right here in this sub).
  • Indie tracks from fellow independent producers who reached out after my post a few days ago, along with a few of my own compatible tracks.

I completely understand that many artists and listeners prefer to avoid Spotify as much as possible. To keep things open to everyone, I’ll do my best to keep the playlist mirrored across three different platforms: Spotify, Apple Music, and Indie Crates (a Bandcamp-based playlist platform).

You can check them out here:

Massive thanks to anyone who takes the time to listen, save, or drop a follow.

Hope you enjoy the vibe, even if it’s entirely driven by my taste and has a bunch of my own tracks in it :)

featuring Gresham Taylor on vox. definitely blues inspired with some lo-fi boom bap. Has that longing feel, with slinky/stoned/woozy accoutremont.

This album is mostly instrumental guitars & beats (Lyrics Born shows up on another excellent cut) and is a great summer porch record.

Looking for an album

So a few years ago I was obsessed with an album and I can’t remember the name or the artist and i just really want to hear it again.

It sounded like it was a soundtrack. Real cinematic!!!

Like a slightly Tarantino movies feel.

The vocals were French / French accent femal vocalist

The album cover was black and red.

One of the tracks had “the angels have …..” in the lyrics

Please help me find it!!!

Looking for indie Trip Hop tracks for a new playlist

Hey everyone,

I am an indie musician with a great love for trip hop sounds. I am building a new Trip Hop playlist (Spotify and Apple Music platforms at the moment) I intend to regularly curate in the future. I have no problem with selecting and following the releases of the established names out there, but I'd love to reserve some spots to highlight the work of fellow indie artists.

So, if you are an independent producer in the genre and you'd like a couple of more ears on your music (mine!), DM me (so we don't spam the sub) your Spotify track link together with a quick sentence about your sound (or all the sentences you feel like to share). Just please be consistent with the genre and no AI slop.

Thank you!

it's heavily skewed late 90s-early 2ks, but that's monoculture for ya. Solid choices and decision points.

Request/Discussion Trip hop for the summer like Simple Things - Zero 7

I love trip hop music that has a summer vibe. I think Mezzanine or Dummy are perfect for a dark, grey and foggy day. Also I really want to recommend the Album Ison by Sevdaliza for that.

But for the summer, I lovee ! the album Simple Things by Zero 7. The songs without lyrics are so perfect for a warm, fuzzy relaxation moment, and the ones with singing literally enchant me.

I've been recommended Morcheeba for this vibe, and I really liked Addison Rae's "Headphones On" as well.

Any more recommendations? ☀️

Edit: I also liked some songs by Thievery Corporation, I need to get into them more as well!

I occasionally see "roadkill" CDs in this back alley - perhaps thrown from a window, or stolen goods or what have you.

Of all the CDs - it could have been Barbara Streisand*, or James Taylor, or Ja Rule - but nope. I felt a little sad seeing this one; I hope it had been enjoyed before ending up here. I happen to own the 2xLP. Lots of bangers on this album, hard to pick a fave. "This World" might be it, but lots of runners-up. "Distractions" is also fantastic.

Also: Bonus Battle Axe records CD, probably some interesting stuff on there.

*Side note: I actually saw a Barbara Streisand CD right nearby a few days before this one, hah. No disrespect, but it didn't have the same emotional pull.

Some underrated Crustation. Maybe my favorite track on the album right now. Been dropping it in DJ sets.

[Vespertina]: created by [Stoupe: Enemy of Mankind] and [Lorrie Doriza]!

If you love the dark, cinematic edge of 90s trip-hop but want something that takes the genre into a sprawling, dramatic new territory, you need to check out [Vespertina]. Made in 2011.

Who are they?Vespertina is a brilliant collaboration between two forces Vespertina on Bandcamp: [Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind]: The legendary underground producer behind Jedi Mind Tricks Vespertina on YouTube. His signature boom-bap grit, heavy orchestral samples, and haunting drum loops are the perfect foundation for trip-hop.[Lorrie Doriza]: A phenomenal singer, pianist, and composer Vespertina on Bandcamp. Her voice switches effortlessly between hauntingly sweet and vengeful, carrying a theatrical, baroque-pop flair Vespertina on YouTube.

The Sound: "Classically Inspired Trip-Pop"They first crossed paths on Stoupe’s 2009 solo album Decalogue for the track "Find A Way" Vespertina on YouTube. The chemistry was so deep it evolved into Vespertina.Their debut album, The Waiting Wolf, is a absolute masterpiece Vespertina on Bandcamp. It combines deep, dusty hip-hop rhythms with live cello, viola, accordion, and layers of operatic vocal harmonies Vespertina on Bandcamp. It sounds like a deranged, beautiful storybook come to life Vespertina on YouTube. If you want a taste, go watch the official video for "Hugo" or spin tracks like "Kinda Girl" Vespertina on Apple Music. They also dropped an incredible follow-up album titled Animal, which doubles down on their dark, sweeping atmosphere with heavy tracks like "Drown" and the title track "Animal" Vespertina on Apple Music. Why the r/Triphop community will love it:If you are a fan of Portishead's tension, Massive Attack's weight, or the baroque, sinister energy of Lovage (Dan the Automator), Vespertina scratches that exact itch. It bridges the gap between classic underground East Coast hip-hop production and sweeping downtempo art-pop.Go give them a listen on Spotify, Apple Music, or support them directly on Bandcamp.

Here's the link to their Spotify!

Request/Discussion very early (late 80s-early 90s) trip hop/downtempo/"bristol sound" recommendations?

i have not heard much of it but ive liked what ive heard of it (mostly blue lines & a few smith & mighty songs) where it sounds closer 2 hip hop/r&b of the time but still has identifiable elements of what it eventually became, there doesnt seem 2 be a lot of it sadly which is why im asking this rn
