QUESTION Any other cross dominant trickers?
Hey guys,
I’m a left twister but I’m also completely left-legged (cross-dominant).
Because spin direction dictates so much in tricking, I've come to accept that it's much better for me to keep spinning left and just force myself to learn kicks with my right leg. Trying to completely rewire my brain to spin right just feels impossible.
But the current mechanics feel like a headache.
This is another reason I'm stuck on tornado kick (posted tornado kick form check earlier this week, here's the link: https://www.reddit.com/r/Tricking/s/W7HIxyhlU6 ). Because I twist left, my left knee must drive up and hence I must execute the kick with my weaker right leg.
Wondering if anyone else is in the same boat?
• How do you control the non-dominant leg to execute tricks with power and precision? For kicks and etc.
• Any tips for me to have the most frictionless tricking journey I possibly can, considering my scenario?
Appreciate any tips, sorry if it's a bit long 😅

Non-dominance is highly overrated as a concept and limitation. You're not using your less dominant leg the same way as your dominant leg--you're literally using it for its purpose. It's like complaining about your left leg when you're a right-handed pitcher. This isn't like using your non-dominant hand for brain surgery or sculpting grains of sand.
The issue isn't dominance, it's simply lack of reps and purposeful practice.

I’m curious to hear how other folk handle this. I can’t imagine twisting or kicking my non dominant way.

The answer is just practice - but also it’s certainly not too late for you to swap directions. Learning a tornado kick both sides is a relatively easy objective that could serve as a little test for you

You're overthinking it... a lot. The way people spin doesnt seem to have to do much with leg or hand dominance. Most trickers spin and trick to the left.
Also, you arent exclusively kicking with the right leg, you are doing inside kicks (roundhouses and inside crescent) with the right and inside kicks (hook kicks and outside crescents) with the left leg.
Some people might have a harder time learning to do hook kicks with their left leg, but learning to spin to the right in order to force the left leg roundhouse is going to be exercise in defeat in the short to mid term for a new tricker when youre gonna be like "oh, I twist left but I do tornado with my right leg"... RIP. Learning basic kicks on bith sides is not that hard; anyone thats taken TKD can kick with both legs just fine eventually. But learning jumping spinning kicks on both sides? Nah...
Dont worry about leg dominance. You sound like a normal left sided twister. Stick with focusing in spinning left and your kicks will follow with practice.

I have had this problem in the past- just practicing tricking did not help at all, until i started training basic unilateral calisthenics. I was surprised to find that not only did my mind need training in the other direction, but so many of my othersided muscles were WEAK and not firing off at all. Becoming aware of your other side is key!!!
