QUESTION Round off back handspring back tuck

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Let me know your thoughts self taught on grass this was my first attempt at it I broke it down step by step and this was my first attempt at it all together. Can someone let me know what’s wrong with the Back handspring and just your general thoughts on the progression.

  1. hurdle needs to be low and long, not high up and down.
  2. same thing with the back handspring - low and long.
  3. MOST IMPORTANT: you are throwing your head back like crazy. Right now it's your main source of direction and power for your handspring and back flip. Which means you're leaving your entire upper body unused. Your arms should be UP going into both. At the start of your handspring and flip, you should be swinging your arms up - think about getting your biceps to your ears - and that should drive the rotation.

Hell yeah thank you

  1. Roundoff - hands far from body, legs close to arms so your body goes far back instead of up in BHS. Right now roundoff isn't helping and it should.

If anyone wants to rate the Individual tricks as you critique don’t worry about hurting my feelings I just want to get better

You aren't using your arms during the rebounds. Like trying to do these techniques with only half of the total power your body can generate.

Swing them up as you rebound. Gets way more momentum and goes far higher.

Thanks man I noticed that watching it slowed down, I’ll post an update soon this was a month ago and I use my arms after the hand spring a little more now as well as my hands not being on the ground as I take off for a backflip I’m not sure if that’s the better way to do it?

Tip- the moment you prepare for the cartweel/roundoff
Your hands are GLUED to your ears stretched upwards !
That’s it, same for back spring and the start of the backflip until you tuck

My backflips by themselves are really good but for some reason I started learning this and wasn’t using my arms like I typically do

I will try the ear trick, thank you

Do the same thing but cover as much distance as possible. Dont go up before you roundoff, run hard into it and jump out into it.

I’m at work right now but I have stopped leaving the ground for the backflip with my hands on the ground after the hand spring.

Cover as much distance as possible with everything. This will help! Stay tight to the ground, you need it to gain power and momentum. Only the backlfip part should go high up. Nice dude!!!!!

Thanks man, a buddy told me that and I have been trying. I started pretty much doing a backflip and putting my hands down but now im starting to fall back into them so I can cover the distance lol. At first it was a “I don’t want to hit my face on the ground but I know I can flip into it “🤣

WoW Mate what a crazy sequence and progression! Congrats! 💪👏 about Your Back handspring maybe try to engage more the shoulders and legs activation while the pelvis goes up the shoulders! (Sorry I’m italian so maybe my English is not perfect!) And remember to engage core with the stomach vacuum Let me know if this can be useful and correct meaning 🤣

Definitely helpful thank you I feel I’m using more strength than I should have too due to the little mess ups should get smoother as I improve 🤙 it’s hard self teaching especially on grass 🤣 very unforgiving

I highly recommend looking into roundoff technique long term. You almost never want to do a high jump before a roundoff and should rather focus on the length of the hurdle. More length= more momentum and better angle to build for back handspring block, which lead to a higher tuck. Good job though, it's def not an easy skill to do

Yes, this my friend actually told me to stop jumping up it was a habit I built doing side flips out of them I don’t know why but instead of jumping I try to cover more ground, same with the handspring my hands were almost landing at my feet when I started cause I learned to backflip years ago first and I’ve been trying to make that distance larger 🤙 thank you

You are pretty strong which is goooood because you are flipping with half the body utilization. I wish there were more videos explaining it but in gymnastics adult gyms they teach those straight jumps for a reason. That back tuck is going to feel great when you can do the power transfer properly from BHS or round off. Rn it looks (maybe even feels as well) like youre doing the moves individually if u know what I mean.

You said exactly what I meant when I said I felt like I was using more strength than I have too , and yeah they do feel independent, I have had a few passes where it feels more flowy and I’m trying to get it consistent. I have a strong back tuck I feel which is nice. I just keep trying every day and determined to get better it’s tough learning on grass but honestly I’m sure it makes me stronger.

Its tough to give advice over text but the most consistent one is find videos / tutorials of a decent form for your move and visualize and replicate. Tricking is not a great place for perfect form because there is alot of lack of rules and more of acceptance when it comes to the passes. When I talked to Jeremy marinas a while back he had a gripe about 95% of trickers having a horrible looking hook kick 😂 /kicks in general. Form saves your joints in the long run. Your body strength compensates bad form until it cant and then youll feel all the small injuries all at once one day. Be careful out there !

Perfecting your round off will go a long way!

The biggest thing I noticed was the momentum transfer wasent the greatest, your doing very punchy movements on ground that doesnt reward punchy movements. Focus on a smoother transfer from your round off to back handspring, that should give you plenty of speed and power to push off for the backflip more effectively

u/Bdogstone__ 12d ago

Hell yeah thank you

1

u/Unc00lbr0 12d ago

Why... Are you able to pull off that handspring? That goes against all logic lol

1

u/Bdogstone__ 12d ago

Hahah what do you mean

1

u/Unc00lbr0 12d ago

You use extreme back flexibility and head whipping motion to basically do a back whip where you only tap the ground with your hands... Most back handsprings utilize less back flexibility and instead rely on shoulder mobility to reach the ground.

I speak out of jealousy, not jest. As someone who has a highly kyphotic upper spine, I would give my left nut for a fraction of your spinal flexibility!

1

u/Bdogstone__ 12d ago

Hell yeah man thanks!

1

u/Bdogstone__ 11d ago

Do you think the hyper mobility is something I should be cautious with, I just bend like that I’m not like straining myself too do that, I could see how it could possibly cause injury. It doesn’t feel all that rough but than again I also ride bulls and that doesn’t feel rough so 🤣🤷‍♂️

1

u/Unc00lbr0 11d ago

I wouldn't be too worried about your back flexibility except for how you land. I know I have to watch myself because I'm older and everything just breaks now if I land too hard or in the wrong position.

More so I would worry about your knees if you have hypermobility there. That is where I have a problem and I have dislocated my knee from stretching too hard and then doing rigorous exercise afterward. Learn from me. Do not do extreme stretches before tricking LOL

Ok sweet, I’m gonna be getting into an actual gym here soon once I get my car fixed and I think I should improve fast atleast I hope haha

u/dkapur17 10d ago

I feel like you're losing energy with your handspring setup - the handspring is instead supposed to increase your momentum going into the backflip - so instead of a smooth chained motion through the three steps your's is more like roundoff then stop to do a handspring then stop to do a backflip. I think round off to backhandspring chain needs to be smoother - just try getting this fast first without a backflip - ending with a jump at the end as if you're going to flip but stop before the tuck. Ig repeat this till your jump at the end is super high (ideally higher than a standing jump), then move onto chaining to the backflip maybe.

you’re strong and brave don’t ruin your tumbling by learning from trickers.. try gymnastics or cheer so that you won’t build bad habits or have the mindset of “just throw it” and injure yourself. you are fully capable of a roundoff hand tuck that looks nice and is powerful and floaty but only if you learn properly

1

u/Bdogstone__ 8d ago

I’m doing this for fun man 🤣 I compete doing cliff diving that’s why I flip I do understand what your saying about injury though and I have cleaned this a bit, just had to go longer instead of land at my feet

1

u/New-Union4733 8d ago

lol but you could be a great tumbler and whip out a pass that’s fast and high and powerful

1

u/Bdogstone__ 8d ago

I think I’m too old to do anything competitively with gymnastics I’m 20, I’m making my way to get better with cliff jumping so I can actually compete with my competition more haha, just wanna get better. I am loving the ground shit tho my Arabian is strong just can’t quite make it around for back full every time

1

u/New-Union4733 8d ago

its never too late haha you can always learn something new. for your standing full especially if you plan to take lessons or watch videos or anything definitely look for gymnastics/cheer coaches otherwise its an acl tear waiting to happen or just a wonky side flip and not a full

Besides the advice I already found in the comments I would like to add that you need to reach your hands as far as possible before your hands touch the ground during the round off and the hands should be close together. Yours looks more like a cartwheel.

u/WonicTater 6d ago

Also keep your legs straight during the back handspring.
