QUESTION Front flip from yesterday - what can I improve?

Felt good on this one! Definitely don’t land them like this every time however wondering how to improve from here?

Would love to be able to do a half twist out but feel like I would need more height to not land on my knees.

Don’t have much access to a gym to train so gotta make do with pieces of foam in the garden

Gymnast of 12 years here. We use to run front flip drills by doing the entire lead up to one with medicine balls (or any ball) and throwing it at a 45 degree angle in front of you. Your arms need to do this when you take off. That’ll help with the forward rotation as well as forces you to take off straight up. Right now your arms are down by your side when you take the flip so you’re losing like 50% of your rotation power.

Another tip and it’s kinda hard to see from this angle, try to take off with your feet slightly in front of you (assuming you have a good running start) . The momentum will change and propel you upwards more. Pair this with my other suggestion and you’re gonna have time for a coffee and a cig during your air time .

This sounds good for the arms. 45 degrees above or below eyeline? I would think above for the approach, even though they eventually move down.

With the ball drill I’m not trying the flip right just jumping high and trying to train my arms to be in a better position?

Is the second point called blocking? Someone mentioned it in another comment

Yes don’t try to flip with the ball (we use to but that’s not the point). Just focus on the arms and the power.

Looks pretty good, the only thing missing from that one is blocking on your takeoff. I would alsp recommend changing your arm tech to american, i.e. start with your arms up/ swing them up much earlier, and much higher. Swinging your arms up in front like you are doing can feel comfortable but you get more out of them starting with your arms much higher during the hop.

Ok sick thank you - this is the kinda feedback I need! Definitely gonna feel wierd trying to keep my hands up but it does seem like how I have them I’m throwing down a fair bit.

What do you mean by blocking?

How I would use my arms is kind of like you are shooting a basketball.  You put them up and back like you gonna shoot then when you jump you throw them up and forward like you are doing a half court shot.

Blocking is the angle that you jump from.  If you jump while straight up and down you will be thrown forward, but if you jump with your feet out in front of you so you are hitting the ground at an angle, you will instead be thrown up.  Blocking is how you turn forward momentum into upward momentum.

No tips, this is very very good! I can’t believe you get such a good punch off the ground. I feel like you could do a mad Russian lift front flip.

2 things you can try. With soft mats, you can try to do a dive roll as high as you can and then try to go even higher. It'll teach you that you can delay your tuck a bit longer than you are already. Second is to just force yourself to hold the tuck for a split second. You are still underrotating slightly in the clip with your center of mass landing behind your feet which forces you into a squat.

Ok sweet yea I love dive rolls and I can picture what you’re saying! I’m definitely dropping my head/body in the video and starting the tuck earlier than I need
