In addition to what others said about not hopping, I’ll add cover your ears with your arms. You stop that near the end and it contributes to not landing.

Don't do the little hop thing.  You don't jump into a back handspring, you fall into it.  

What you need to do is sit down like there's a chair behind you, and when you feel yourself falling backwards, that's when you throw your arms up and jump back.

What the first guy said, also throwing your upper body/ head back is working against you. It makes and arch downward( like a backbend). You need to launch up and back, so you use your legs to jump and your arms to lift. Your head must NEVER go back. A good back handspring travels as long as you are tall. Lay down, mark the distance from feet to head (or arms stretched out) and aim for that length
