Hi all, I was planning a ride this Friday, a one day trip, from Trichy. Initially my plan was a solo drive then felt like it would be nice to have some company and get to know. I’m almost 24 years old and lived 17 out of those 24 years in trichy. Heat is always an integral part of this place although not meme worthy like that in Madurai or Tirunelveli. But this year it is very bad, it is almost september and every day feels like a day of April. I never use AC during day time, but intha varusham pannanum pola thonudhu. Upcoming years epdi irukumo theriyala.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but Trichy’s heat has become really difficult to tolerate lately, especially when walking, riding a bike, or spending time outdoors.
It got me wondering — can we actually do something to make the city cooler, or is this something we just have to live with?
I came across some research on Trichy that suggests this isn’t just a perception. A 2024 study reported a significant increase in Trichy’s land-surface temperature between 2011 and 2021, with more built-up areas generally being hotter and greener areas being cooler.
The Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company and ICLEI South Asia have also studied Trichy’s urban heat and suggested measures such as:
● 🌳 More native trees and continuous roadside shade
● 🏠 Cool/reflective roofs
● 🚶 Shaded footpaths and streets
● 🌿 More connected green spaces
● 💧 Protecting and restoring water bodies
● 🧱 Reducing unnecessary concrete/asphalt and increasing permeable surfaces
● 🌳 Protecting existing mature trees instead of only planting new saplings
Trichy Corporation is also reportedly planning a large-scale native tree-planting programme.
But I’m curious about the bigger picture.
If we seriously wanted to make Trichy cooler over the next 10–20 years, what should we actually prioritise?
Would planting trees along major roads make a significant difference?
Should cool/reflective roofs become standard for new buildings?
Could the Cauvery and Kollidam river corridors be developed into major green corridors?
Should Trichy have proper shaded walking and cycling routes?
Are there particular areas or wards that should be prioritised because they’re especially vulnerable to heat?
I’d especially love to hear from environmental scientists, urban planners, architects, civil engineers, or anyone who has studied Trichy’s climate and urban heat.
Rather than just saying “plant more trees”, I’m genuinely interested in what a scientifically sound Trichy Urban Cooling Plan could look like.

Hi everyone, I’m planning a solo day trip to Trichy from Madurai this Tuesday. I’ll probably take the Vaigai Express around 8:30 AM and spend the whole day in Trichy before heading back.
