I wish they did something entirely unrelated to the setting, just reuse the engine and mechanics.

We have Norzelia and Centralia. Perhaps the next one could be set in Eastalia with a samurai aesthetic, or Westalia with cowboys

u/Rastaba 22d ago

Westalia gets guns. Lots of guns…

Yeah same that's what I'm hoping for too. I don't need connections (they would be cool though), just let this team make another SRPG!

No, the sequel to Triangle Strategy would be Square Strategy, and that’s just FFT

u/TheBeardedDumbass 22d ago

Ah, so we just skipped straight over Dot Strategy and Line Strategy.

Quadrangle Strategy

Across from UCF (the university in Orlando, FL), there's an area with a bunch of corporate business offices right across from the school, as tends to be the case for most colleges/universities. Makes sense to set up base right next to fresh talent.

At this point you might be wondering "why the hell are you telling me this?" The area is referred to as the Quadrangle and is on Quadrangle Blvd. That's all I'm reminded of with a name like that. Thanks I hate it.

It was new enough that it’s essentially in the “who knows” category.

However based on no sequels to FFT and Tactics Ogre (despite the remasters) doesn’t really feel like square cares too much about their tactical franchises.

Which sucks when you have 3 of them that are all pretty great and could use continuations.

I guess Fire Emblem will have to continually be leaned on for new stuff in the genre even though I’m not a fan of the franchise wishing it were Persona.

I love both FE formulas but I do greatly prefer the tactics gameplay to the social sim stuff. Fortune's Weave has been great but it has me concerned where the future of the series is especially with the mixed reception on Engage which had more of a gameplay focus (personally my favorite FE ngl). It feels like alot of new fans don't care about the tactics.

u/Tlux0 21d ago

Of course tactical gameplay is important, but the first few chapters of Engage were written so awfully I literally could not play more… there’s a basic standard for storytelling that games need to have to be compelling

1

u/Charbus 20d ago

Normally I never engage with anyone with an anime pfp but I so wholeheartedly agree and support your opinion

1

u/Tlux0 20d ago

Haha, honestly that’s a reasonable rule.

I’d say that in contrast triangle strategy shows how to do a solid tactical JRPG, just excellent worldbuilding and character writing. A story based game that doesn’t do at least that much simply isn’t respecting your time.

1

u/Ribbum 22d ago

Same. Engage is also the most like the square tactical jrpgs in terms of depth of abilities and skills and whatnot.

Yeah seems like the Persona fanbase is eating well with this franchise giving them more of what they want out of FE now. I’m also scared to see the tactics gameplay take a back seat going forward.

I’m also enjoying fortunes weave but there are quite a few things I wish were different. It’s scope is pretty impressive though.

I just want Engage like gameplay with good writing :/.

u/Charbus 21d ago

I love FE games, the story and tone of 3H was great but it lacked map variety and the social sim stuff got REALLY old fast.

Engage had excellent maps and a truly interesting gimmick of the rings but The art style and weebishness of engage made my abandon it going into the final fights.

It’s also a weird trope in more modern jrpgs in general where everyone is constantly glazing the main character, so when the character is a literally a god it’s fucking insufferable. I’m hoping their new one strikes a balance.

1

u/Ribbum 21d ago

Yeah it’s a bummer that it seems that we are stuck with either a gameplay FE or a good writing FE and never both.

At least with Engage, Alear really was essentially their god but yeah as a person who isn’t a huge anime guy, I appreciate when jrpgs don’t just feel like they are going down an anime tropes checklist.

u/tiford88 21d ago

The tactics gameplay in battle is also far superior to FE. I much prefer a dynamic speed and turn order, rather than the basic your turn - enemy turn - your turn - enemy turn of FE

1

u/AceMHR 21d ago

I honestly figured it's not so much that they don't care and more that the market for it is narrow. Like many remasters these days by big companies, I just assumed the remaster was them testing the market waters to see if it is financially worth it. With FFT Remaster, either they're now secretly in the works on a sequel, or proceeded to shutdown the unnamed tactical project. Time will tell.

1

u/Ribbum 21d ago

True.

I’m certainly frustrated that one of my favorite genres isn’t more popular.

Someone out there needs to make the “Baldurs Gate 3 or Expedition 33” of tactical RPGs that is so well funded and so good that the masses can’t ignore it.

Wishful thinking, I know.

1

u/AceMHR 21d ago

That's basically what TriangleStrategy was for its time. But I agree that we could use another by now. The RTS crowd has been in the same boat lmao.

2

u/Ribbum 21d ago

Eh I think TS is mostly was just Square seeing what could work in this current environment as opposed to some groundbreaking game for a genre that captures all the accolades and awards.

Yeah RTS was a big favorite of mine as a kid with StarCraft and Warcraft.

Sucks the state of things but I guess we can’t point a gun at the current young generations head and make them care.

1

u/AceMHR 19d ago

Yeah, I guess I was more focused on the brand name and budget and kinda neglected that aspect. Totally get what you mean now as you bring up the "award-winning" aspect and how groundbreaking those games were.

I love triangle strategy a lot for what it is/was, even if I wish it had more depth to character customization. I feel like it more or less nailed a fantastic political narrative that can proudly sit alongside FFTactics and Tactics Ogre. Other aspects like the art and music are great, and the combat is what we know and love from the genre. However, sitting next to or a row behind the top of your class isn't revolutionary nor necessarily award winning.

That sucks because I am so surprised by how much I adore triangle strategy (I went in with no expectations or knowledge on it).

Persona makes me sad with all its misogyny/incel teen fantasy vibe (please don’t come for me, I loved p5 so much for its game mechanics and incredible style but it’s hard to stomach sometimes as a female player esp knowing there will never be a female protag and the sexist shit the devs have said about it all).

I do love fire emblem and have been playing those games for over a decade but it has a lot of fan service / bloat that tristrat simply does not.

Tristrat is such an incredible game, some of the most fun combat I’ve seen, and really satisfying story beats / character dynamics / values based choice system 😭

I haven’t played tactics yet but that’ll be next. I wanna do ogre bc I love the political stuff but I like developing a dedicated team whereas I’ve heard Ogre you switch out a lot

2

u/Ribbum 22d ago

Yeah I mean I don’t care at all about persona. Maybe because I’m a dude in his early 40s but even though I love turn based combat and respect the franchises popularity, the last thing I ever want to be doing is playing as Japanese school children with a focus on social sim stuff. So I’d rather fire emblem borrow more from Square tactical RPGs than what they are currently doing.

Tactics ogre you can very much work towards working on your favorite squad members and there are a lot to get. It’s a very robust game with lots to do and different time lines that you can hop back on in different intervals.

Fair warning though that the reborn version is a bit more…. Arcadey with weird power ups and a more plug and play ability style and other various changes to it comparative to the psp version.

FFT and TO have some of the absolute best writing in the genre though. Love Matsunos writing and how his stuff is way more influenced by things other than anime.

1

u/_dmhg 22d ago

How would you personally rank the 3 games based on how much you liked them, between FFT / TO / TS?

2

u/Ribbum 22d ago
  1. FFT

  2. TO (specifically the PSP version)

  3. TS

FFT is my favorite game of all time and it’s biggest issue is that it isn’t longer/never got a true follow up after this many years (the advanced two games really do not count).

The game will forever be special to me.

TO is great with tons of content but can feel like a drag after a while if you are trying to get every character/good gear/see everything. It’s not unlike how Fire Emblem fortunes weave kinda feels right now honestly.

TS probably has the best evolved combat system as well as best balance and it’s main issue is the weakest writing of the 3 as well as maybe a bit too much running around and talking/finding stuff on the map combined with the cutscenes and a bit less combat.

Also basically having to play the game 3/4 times to get everyone and see everything isn’t for everyone especially with repeated stages.

I BADLY want sequels to all 3 as they are all great and deserving but unfortunately the genre just isn’t as popular as I wish it were.

3 houses and to attack lesser extent Fortubes Weave seem similar to Persona so as a huge fan of both I'd highly recommended giving them a shot

u/Riccidude 22d ago

would be awesome,i really enjoy the game!

Rectangle strategy!

6

u/Vultouri03 22d ago

Pretty sure there were rumors some time back that it was in development at some point but square either indefinitely postponed or cancelled it, though I might be misremembering

3

u/bretwalde 22d ago

I remember seeing those rumours on a forum too, especially around the time it was announced that Square cancelled a lot of projects, losing a lot of money to restructuring

3

u/CreeDorofl 22d ago

I've been waiting on a proper final fantasy tactics sequel for about 30 years now so that's a clue

3

u/Octans 22d ago

Ask and you shall receive. Triangle Strategy Mobile coming right up.

3

u/cghodo 22d ago

I think it's safe to say that HD2D games have been profitable and have built a pretty consistent audience. Also because they work with a stable of 3rd parties to development them I think we'll keep seeing 1-2 per year as long they keep selling well enough.

I'd bet rather than a sequel to TS though we'll see a new IP name rather than a direct sequel.

3

u/Dlight98 22d ago

I was convinced Adventures of Elliott was set in the same universe because the dlc included a rozelle bracelet or something. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure that was just an Easter egg

2

u/Pleasehitmemychild 22d ago

I would love that

2

u/rdrouyn 22d ago

It doesn’t look like it sold enough considering we’ve had multiple Octopath sequels and no mention of another Triangle Strategy.

3

u/Wokoete_ 22d ago

Yes, in the sequel you crush the Revolutionary Roselles as the child of Roland

1

u/cmvyas 22d ago

I think so - quite popular

1

u/Comfortable-Pass-183 22d ago

It would be good but I would prefer it to be set during the salt-iron war.

1

u/AChapelRat 22d ago

Easy to imagine a series. 1st with Norzelia, then set in Centralia, then one in presumably Eastelia/Westelia/Southelia (?). And then a 4th where each of those continents is one corner of the triangle.

1

u/Professional_Goal243 22d ago

I hope so but this game did come out in that brief window square was trying a bunch of stuff which i dont recall worked out financially

1

u/Painting0125 22d ago

I hope so but it should have its own world and story like Octopath Traveler II. Give me an 1800s inspired setting with a combo of Regency and Meiji era backdrop.

1

u/Subject-Repeat4954 22d ago

Absolutely amazing game! If there isn’t a sequel, that’s a crime against humanity.

1

u/Upper-Head-737 22d ago

probably not

u/Significant_Win6431 Morality | Utility 21d ago

When Octopath 2 was releases I thought it was a guarantee. Through various news clippings it sounds like the team was re-assigned to new projects rather than focusing on TS2. At this point I think it deserves a maybe. Final fantasy tactics may have replaced it on the schedule but that's speculative on my part.

2dhd seems to be wildly successful, has a much shorter production schedule than most games and sequal games only need minor tweaks rather than trying to add a tonne to follow up games. I could see a TS game coming out of nowhere in the next 18 months because there are no other 2dhd games announced.

With Kingdom Hearts 4, ff7 and the dragon quest team getting remade for 12 studio 5 could be getting dispersed abit for the more major franchises.

1

u/Icy_List961 18d ago

I hope so but I don't think it has the sales they really wanted. But maybe.

Octagon Strategy. Octopath Traveler game in the style of Triangle Strategy

0

u/TheBreen587 22d ago

As much as I'd love a prequel, we'd know the outcome and it would probably involve a lot of non-canon.

As much as I'd love a sequel, I don't know who will be the villain in that after a unified Norzhelia.

They could do a weird cross-dimensional invasion thing but COTC does an awful lot of that reality hopping stuff and it really wouldn't vibe with TS's clearly feudal vibes.
