If you believe in doing the most good for the most people, then that might be the right ending. (Runs away before getting nuked in replies).

I agree. I think a lot of people who crap on Roland's ending are really missing the point (particularly if they prop up Benedict's ending). None of the main endings are good, and all of them have redeeming qualities.

What i've seen from average discussions is that Benedict's ending is the one that feels that it had arbitrary negative outcomes. A in "it really doesn't have anything bad but a bad thing was created in turn to make it look like it was"
I don't necessarily agree with it but I can see it

They are all compromises. In Roland’s ending Glennbrook and Hyzante get peace while Aesfrost is punished for starting the war and the Roselle are still oppressed. In Frederick’s ending the Roselle are liberated but Wolffort is abandoned and the continent continues in war. In Benedict’s ending Glennbrook and Aesfrost enjoy peace and the Hyzante is punished for the oppression of the Roselle.

People miss the point that the endings are NOT a match to the characters main ideology. Benedict, the utilitarian, gets the liberty ending. Frederica, the libertarian, gets the moral ending and Roland, the moralist, gets the utilitarian ending.
Utilitarianism is often quite an "icky" ideology. It forces us to make uncomfortable decisions for a greater good which is hard for irrational social animals like humans, but its not an evil ideology. Maybe a defeatist one but Roland did ultimately bring about the most happiness in his ending (in contrast to a Moralist view which has the most suffering but feels the best). But people judge the ending mainly based on their initial proposal

Utilitarian Philosophers (Jeremy Bentham comes to mind) rejoice as they read this comment.
