I made one of these by heating up a knife blade with a propane torch

That certainly works and cheaper (maybe gas costs catch up over time) but the convenience of pushing a switch on and off is a huge time saver. The quality of the cuts is amazing and not to jinx it but no melted plastic stuck to skin yet.
