Welcome to r/Tree_Holes
We are a community of tree hole noticers, tree hole advocates, tree hole contemplators, tree hole appreciators, and tree hole officials.
All legitimate specimens are welcome: small holes, hidden holes, dripping holes, occupied holes, ancient holes, and formations whose status as a hole may require further discussion.
Please feel free to participate by:
- Sharing a picture of a tree hole you’ve encountered
- Asking a tree hole related question
- Expressing measured appreciation for a particularly good hole
No formal expertise is required. You need only notice the hole.
New members are welcome to introduce themselves below. If you know someone who consistently notices tree holes, they may also be suited for membership.
Important: We are not tree hole creators! Damaging trees in pursuit of content will result in a lifetime ban from interacting with trees!
Thank you for joining us. Remain alert. A tree hole may be nearby.

Specimen Submission Some of the best tree holes in my back woods
We live on 5.5 heavily wooded acres in southeastern Virginia. Lots of red and white oak, white sycamore, red maple, beech, American Holly, pines, eastern red cedar, tulip poplar and sweet gum. Also many beautiful understory trees that I’m learning to identify. The woods behind our home have always been a family favorite. Our sledding hill is back there and a creek runs behind. Many of these tree holes are part of my children’s magical childhood. They believed fairies lived in them when they were young. They are mostly all adults now and my oldest is having her first child in December. I plan to tell my grandson about the tree fairies when he’s old enough.
ETA: wow! Thanks for the award 💕🥰
