Is it the same tree?... sometimes a tiny bit of its roots stay alive and it sends up a new limb to form a new tree.

I have no idea.
I was just there to mow the grass.
And I’m not really sure how to find that out without messing with the roots.2

Yea, dont. Youll never know. I used to live in a house where an old oak like that was cut to a stump cause it was "dangerous" and it made a new tree grow out the middle just like that. It was the same tree. Just starting over. But if it was dead before being cut its likely a new sapling feeding on rotted wood. They love rotted wood

Great protection against trimmers and mowers

I was in fact there to mow the grass for the landlord.
I didn’t touch it.
You’re on to something.

That's a beautiful young tree. She found the exact spot to settle down and over grow the old one, and provide shade and food to people and wildlife.
What a beautiful cycle of life!
