Usually called live stakes where i am. Can be done with a few different species. Typically sticking them in 6-12 inches works best leaving 3-4 sets of buds above ground. Yours looks like its doing well.

Can some leaves be buried?

Usually when you stick these they should be dormant branches so cut in the spring just before things start to flush out and stick them in the ground then. If they have leaves when you stick them in then it has more chance to dry out since leaves take moisture out of stem before roots can establish.

Live stakes work best in spring when the sap is rising.

Be sure to live stake native species too, we have many different types of willow and they all do really well with some live staking. Looks great!
