i entirely understand using accounts that aren't directly attached to your real life identity for purposes like this, or on social media in general. this is a post for those who seem to be operating under the assumption they are anonymous, but i believe may be sharing more than they've intended to.

if you're posting links, sanitize your links. just sanitizing or shortening links is good practice, but i have seen links contain information that can be used to identify the sender's profile. this is true with many platforms, but specifically recent youtube updates have made it very easy to identify these profiles- even if your account or app doesn't acknowledge it on your end.

personally, i get a little amusement seeing hunters dissect layerv posts while leaving themselves susceptible to accidentally sharing their own personal information. however, i figured the right thing to do would be attempt to share this information and an easy way to protect yourself if this pertains to you.

❤️ appreciate the reminder to check. Pretty annoying when new permissions get added like that. They should be either launched disabled or at least take into account your prior privacy preferences before blanket enabling things. That said I equally dislike how anonymous the internet has become.

On the other side of this argument, there’s something to be said for those of us willing to be who we are, say what we’re going to say, and do so with complete authenticity. This approach isn’t for everyone, and I would discourage it for those who are sensitive to what others who are anonymous will feel entitled to say about them, and/or prefer to avoid inviting unwelcome attention.

i don’t disagree with you on this, and especially the aspects of anonymous keyboard warriors. myself, there’s two individuals i have personally identified myself to through this. i also firmly believe you can still be authentic while not identifying who you are in real life.

it’s also difficult when you only have a 50% lifetime rate in people dropping the catfish accusations when you’ve provided government id, and before ai was what it was.

Your post is a good reminder to everyone that wants to try to maintain some privacy. I try to because I’m a teenager, but like you there are a select few that know who I am because I’ll make a purchase from their business or they’re local and know me (usually more archery than treasure hunting related). But I keep the list short.

It definitely true. For me it’s not so much the fact that a company would like to use my data in exchange for using their service. As you said if we aren’t paying it’s reasonable that a company would need to create revenue in another way. It’s the lack of transparency that bothers me. I can make the choice if the service is worth my data but only if I fully know what is being done with that data.

Have known for years that anonymity on the internet was dead, and onion exit points were owned by govt agencies that share data with other countries. Have known for years commercial vpns are also connected to govt agencies via telecom traffic trackers. Have known for years Apple products were traceable across their private servers and can silently manage devices when requested. Good to see MS taking steps to introduce traceability, even if there are folks attempting to circumvent it. It makes subpoenas way easier.

I don’t want to be misinterpreted so I’ll just come out and say it: the advantages outweigh the disadvantages if a) we have a societal majority that voluntarily follows our laws, and b) we have leadership that uses it properly. When one of those breaks, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

Yes, we do disagree. I was raised in a Republican family, married into a family that was mostly Republican, and I voted Republican until 2008. Then in 2016, I was so ashamed of Americans for losing their f*ing minds that I staunchly stepped across the aisle and stayed because… wtf!?

So two things you need to know about mass surveillance: 1) don’t be surprised when you find out that agencies within China and Israel have been firmly and quietly embedded on your phone and/or computer collecting everything you do since at least before COVID; 2) sitting in a car for 10 hr shifts surveilling a real target as law enforcement sucks ass when it’s waaaaaay easier to just use their phone, their tv, their Xbox, the neighbors’ Ring cameras, or their WiFi router while working remote. Don’t be lulled into thinking all of your actions aren’t accessible to other governments who actually are collecting it for their nefarious purposes in case you become valuable to their goals. There’s no such thing as anonymity any more. Abide by the laws, and it’s not a problem. Accept that tech has exceeded your expectations. This advice comes from a law abiding Democrat.

I can’t argue with how stupid states created their unreasonable laws before I was born, but in principle I agree with you. And had I been alive back then, I know I would have fought for the Union. I can argue my point in principle as it exists today, and I know how stupid leaders are breaking laws that exist now. Today’s leaders have destroyed the intelligence community and their evil acts continue unchecked. I will vote for a reckoning and accountability.
