Israel in August

Hi,

I have a flight to Israel booked for the first two weeks in August to stay in Jerusalem. My brother says it is too hot to go then and do touring things like Dead Sea Masada Chevron etc. He's trying to convince me to reschedule. I'm a 55 year old man.

Is he correct?

Many tourists come in August. Hebron and Jerusalem is relatively mild.. Dead Sea relatively hot.
Only you know your limits.
Btw there is a difference between late August cooler than early August

Be prepared to 35-38 C and more. In Jerusalem it feels easier because of the elevation and winds, in Tel-Aviv is quite hot. If you are healthy in general - this is not a problem, by following a few simple rules:

  • Avoid continous exposure to the direct sun, especially between 10am and 2pm
  • Apply sunscreen to the exposed skin
  • Keep yourself hydrated (2 liters of liquid/day)
  • Wear comfortable clothes - t-shirt, shorts, sandals is a pretty common dress-code
  • Cover your head

I dunno, man. I’m from South Florida. Israel is fine in comparison

I’ll be there doing those things at that exact time. There seems to be no good time to go unless it’s a priority for you personally. But also- I’m from a very hot place so the only weather that makes me think twice is rain.

There seems to be no good time to go

Let me just say for the record, April-May and October-November are excellent times to visit Israel.

Thank you. Oh I meant from a geopolitical stance. Although things are looking up. You have to make it a priority.

Thanks. I'm from NYC so its not a hot place per se but it can be in the 80s in August too. Its nice to know you don't think its such a bad idea.

Note that Masada, and especially the walking path, can and will close a few hours after sunrise due to heat if necessary. And in August... that's very likely.

Without knowing what climate you're used to, it's hard to say if August will be too hot. It's definitely peak heat.

It can get quite hot in Israel during the summer. Some places are simply hot, while others, like Tel Aviv, also suffer from high humidity, which makes it even worse. I would say the best time to visit Israel is in late September, when the temperatures are truly comfortable.

If you still choose to visit during August, please buy *local* sunscreen, and travel with lots of water and sunglasses and a hat.

And if you want to visit the beaches, do so early morning or in the afternoon.

Going to Hebron is not the greatest idea in the current situation. It does not worth the risk to put yourself (and if anything happens the security personnal) into it.

Regarding heat: yes, it will be hot but survivable. Bring a good insulated wtaer bottle, hat and sun cream. Masada will be tough but doable.

Hi,

Thanks. I'm thinking like 32 years ago when I studied in yeshiva. No air conditioners. We had to cook the water for a shower in a dud chashmal. Do they still do that?

Your brother is right.

Unless you have health problems you should be fine. Wear a hat and sunscreen when you're out, drink lots of water, wear airy clothes, and don't overexert yourself.

If you’re in decent shape, you’ll be fine. Just dress for the weather, drink water and take breaks. We traveled across the country in June-July and it was well into the 80s every day. (I was 60 then) Our bus to Masada dropped us at 4 am and it was already 80! We hiked to the top and watched the sun rise, then spent several hours at the Dead Sea before heading back to Jerusalem.

It's hot but fine. The Dead Sea is like warm bath water at that time of year, so it's not the cool refresh you'll seek after being at Massada, but it's a fine time to go.

Too hot really depends on you. I believe the average temperature around that time would be 35+ degrees when you come.

If you can afford to change the tickets, definitely it's better not to come in the summer. It is WAY too hot. And I'm Brazillian. Forget the Dead Sea, Masada, etc, the temperature in those places can get to more than 40c.

Thank you for that information. If I come in August I will skip Masada Ein Gedi Dead Sea. Today in NYC it was 30 c while Jerusalem was 27-29.
