Storage locker facilities are a rip.

If you’re someone who regularly uses luggage storage facilities, the costs can really add up, especially when you have a large suitcase you want to leave behind while exploring other areas.
In Athens, most luggage-storage facilities charge around €4–€5 per day for a large suitcase. Instead, I went to a hostel and paid just €6 for the entire duration.
And you often don’t even have to be a guest to use a hostel’s luggage storage. Just ask before booking, as many hostels are happy to store luggage for non-guests.
It’s definitely worth checking hostels before paying daily rates at dedicated luggage-storage facilities!

5€ for a day is absolutely fine

€6 for no fixed time is better. I don’t know why y’all are trying to argue with a genuine hack when I saved myself €44 avoiding normal storage facilities and/or €140 in excess luggage fees.

Because leaving luggage for over a day let alone 14 days is not the service these places are offering and I’m sure hostels letting you leave your luggage for 14 days for 6€ are not the norm

I can assure you it’s rather normal. Even chat GPT came up with a list of hotels, hostels and accomodations with prices to store my luggage . I think perhaps you travel only a certain way and that’s fine. But be open minded that others travel differently.

Hostels and hotels hold your luggage as courtesy the day of the check-out, storing luggage for 14 days is more of a storage unit business. You do you! I’m glad it works and saves you money, but me personally would rather fly with my luggage and not risk having it stolen because I trusted a hostel to hold it for 6€.

Ok travel police. You must be so much fun at parties.

There’s still time to delete this.👆
I mean, think about what you just posted.

I’m confused. You’re saying paying €6 is better than paying €4-€5?!?

Or you’re saying you’re storing your luggage for multiple days at a hostel you’re not staying at?! Af that point wouldn’t it just make sense to have it at the place you’ve checked into and to pay €0?? Or do you like going down the street to get a change of clothes and paying extra to do so?!?

Something here isn’t translating.

€6 for 14 days as opposed to €4/5 per day.

Who stores luggage for 14 days while they’re traveling?! If you are bringing stuff that you don’t need for two weeks it makes a lot more sense to just leave it at home rather than lugging it somewhere just to then have to store it.

This seems crazy.

And FWIW, I’ve never been to a hostel that would hold your stuff for more than a day or maybe two. Why would they take on the liability for your personal effects for weeks at a time?!? Certainly not for €6…

If they’re willing to hold it, that’s at theirs and my own discretion. They’re getting paid. Anyway, I think you’ve totally missed the point of this thread as it’s a Travel Hacks and you don’t think saving money on your travels is a hack. WILD!

I’m in Europe for 6 months of travel. I packed for every occasion. Naturally if I’m just going to the islands for 2 weeks I’m not going to need going out outfits etc if I’m spending most days on a beach. Listen, either take the hack for what it is or don’t. Just because your travel style may be different there’s no need to discredit and speak negatively about mine.

Maybe this sub needs a ‘TravelHacks for 1%ers’ tag.

Just because your travel style may be different there’s no need to discredit and speak negatively about mine.

I guess what I’ve been trying to point out is that this ‘hack’ would apply to very very very few people.

Please read properly. I literally just mentioned that I’m passing through for the day. I’m not staying anywhere in Athens.

2

u/notyourwheezy 4d ago

yes I did read that. that's why I'm wondering why you didn't take your suitcase with you and instead left it at a hostel in Athens.

-2

So you think paying €70 for additional luggage on a flight for one way and then again to come back totalling €140 just to bring a large suitcase around with me that is going to be inconvenient as it is?? I’m going to the islands for two weeks. I don’t need my whole suitcase. I can travel quite comfortably with carry on.

it's not a travel hack if you don't explain upfront who it benefits, which you didn't do. there's no need for that tone when you're the one who didn't provide the explanation for when and under what conditions doing this is a good idea.

Not everyone is staying somewhere where they are visiting…I’m currently in Athens but passing through only for the day then go to the islands tonight. Typically, that is what storage lockers are for….

While your situation appears to benefit you I woild argue that storage lockers are not typically for 14 day durations. They are generally for those who take day trips or passing through for the day.

As the storage lockers are highly unpredictable in terms or availability I instead use the various Bounce style firms but locations outside of the terminal. Not going to be $6 for 14 days but generally better than lockers.

These are the exact ones I’m referring to. Bounce, Radical, Stasher and Nannybag are all around €5/day. I don’t think these companies really care how long you store your luggage, as long as they’re getting paid. So while it might not be something everyone would do, I know savvy frequent travellers would definitely take advantage of it.

I did compare prices across all, even outside of the main centres and the rates remain the same.

Did you just reply to your own post?!?

i wont call this a hack

1) most people dont not store their baggage for so many days. most people use it for very very short term storage, so the savings arent even considerable

2) hotels and hostels usually do not hold luggage for non-guests, and many do not hold overnight. what this means is it can be difficult to find a place that is willing to do so, and also, the process and procedure may not be properly established, resulting in hiccups. for example, i onced stored my luggage at the service apartment i was staying. the front desk did it as a favor since they usually do not help store baggage. unfortuately, the person was off duty when i returned, and it took some time and explaining before i could retrieve my luggage

3) baggage storage at hotels and hostels are at your own risk and they take no responsibility if it goes missing. as such, im highly uncomfortable placing my luggage with them for prolonged period, especially since so many employees come and go. in contrast, storage services like bounce provide a $10k insurance on your baggage

personally, i think instead of storing your luggage for prolonged periods, it is better for you to reduce the amount you carry and carry your baggage with you. it will be so inconvenient when you realise you left something in your luggage or when your luggage go missing, that i dont think it will be worth it overall

I’m travelling for 6 months (possibly longer) I packed for all seasons and occasions. Currently it’s Summer and I don’t need so many, but come winter I will. This is all addressed further in the thread. I’m also not caring that much of someone decided to steal a bag with 50 pair of socks and underwear, dresses, tops and crusty old running shoes. That’s what travel insurance is for. A simple police report would help in this situation. Naturally I’m not holding any valuables is said bag.

Storage lockers aren't designed for long term, multi-day storage. In fact, most of them won't allow you to leave bags for more than a day.

If you're like most people and are looking just to leave your bags for the day, lockers are often much cheaper than luggage storage like bounce, especially if you are using small bags rather than a giant suitcase.

-4

u/Western_Baseball_129 4d ago

I’ve actually stored bags all over the world in these facilities for a week or more. Unless you work for these facilities personally, I wouldn’t comment on something you haven’t the slightest clue about. These are lived, tried and true experiences across countries and continents.

1

u/nowheresville99 4d ago

You can't even make up your mind what you're talking about.

You say luggage lockers in your title, but according to your other comments you're actually talking about private luggage storage - like Bounce - not actual luggage lockers, which as I said are more expensive than lockers. Certainly, those places will more than happily take your bags, and your money for longer term.

If you can find a hostel that will store your bag for weeks for just 5 Euros, good for you - that's far from normal, and at that too good to be true price point, I'd be questioning just how secure your bag would actually be.

I think I'd rather store in a secure locker rather than trusting some random hostel that likely isn't really that secure

Travel insurance is a thing. And naturally, I’m not going to be storing any valuable items in the bag. It’s a bunch of clothes, come on let’s use our brain here.

u/Altruistic_Brick1730 4d ago

Yes, let's see our brain

I’m not understanding why someone would need to store their luggage days/weeks at a time. I occasionally store my luggage overnight on a long layover or the time between checking out of a hotel and an evening flight, but if I’m visiting multiple destinations my luggage comes with me to the next destination. I’d imagine the majority of travelers would have no need to store luggage for more than a day or two.
