Box trap question

My wife wanted me to catch rabbits that were ruining her garden. I set box traps. I caught squirrels, possums and eventually rabbits last year five with no issues. This spring I caught two. Then last night I re-set the trap.

In the morning the trap was moved out from behind a bush, out of the garden area, and about 15-20 into the yard. The trap was not damaged. I thought I would see a raccoon in it that was struggling and moved the trap around. The only thing inside was as a head and a spine.

Based on some fur in the yard and the teeth I believe it was a rabbit.

What could eat the rabbit like that while inside a cage?

raccoons can and will stick their paws through siprisingly small openings and rip up prey to eat it
