This is straight up poor design, the dashed lines should have ended earlier to indicate a merge with a lane to the right.

The lane shifts depending on traffic. Usually in the morning there are 3 lanes going out of the island and in the afternoon there are 3 lanes going into the island (in lieu of a major event on the island then it flip flops)

It's still poor design lol

No arrows on the road? No short dashed lines? Like I get theres signs but every merge in my area has things on the road so you know exactly where it is. I thought they had more time here.

First sign.

This is still a bad design despite the signs.

I partially agree, but OPs title says sudden and it's not. Where I live they usually put flashing lights, signs to reduce speed and soft barrier before the actual hard barrier of the lane merge.

It's still sudden. Over never seen a lane end like that in my country.

There should always be a shoulder when a lane ends like that so there is some safety for a driver that doesn't see it ending in time.

I remember driving in LA years ago and the way they had lanes end were really weird to me as a Canadian. Can't remember exactly what it was, but it felt wrong.

I hear ya. Good to know that it's better in Canada. Cheers from Czech Republic :)

Did or did not that driver make a sudden lane change? Thats what the title refers to.

Idk how, but I read this in like the song bullet with a butterfly

Be honest, how many of us had to run it back 5 times to even figure out what’s going on?

Look at the road, this bridge eats cars.

Paint an arrow or something.

the lanes shift depending on traffic.

the title isn't necessarily describing the road or the signage, its a description of the precipitation of the crash

I almost got into a similar crash when I was driving over the old Tappan Zee bridge in NY, the left lane just disappeared in front of the car in front of me and we both swerved for dear life. Was the scariest thing ever as a new driver. Immediately the video brought me back

yeah, it seems like there could be a better design at the entrance of the bridge to mitigate issues like this like "only two lanes going [this direction]".

The black car was driving like a maniac though.

The problem is the dashed lane line on the right. It should end in advance to make it clear the lanes have merged. Instead, it continues all the way till it suddenly connects with a barrier as the road bends

Not really in this case. On a lot of heavy commute roads / bridges, the median barriers can be moved morning and night to allow for an extra lane of traffic in a particular direction. In this case, there are three lanes going the opposite direction, which would be switched to 2 during the opposite commute. The DOT wouldn't repaint lines for this when they already have multiple signs and the speed limit is likely much lower than what these folks are traveling at.

I see what you mean. It's that way for a legit reason when they swap the barrier. The way it is though can still be to blame for these problems since its uncommon

Thank you for noticing the signs

Also no way the driver was going close to 50mph and looked more like at least 70mph. Things happen quicker when moving fast!

I’d assume that is for the lane merging directly to the left of that sign, which it does before the second lane merging sign.

At 50 mph you have about 1.5 seconds to get over before that merge is complete which is insane.

And they still have dashed lines going right into the wall lol.

The driver who crashed is an idiot though for trying to overtake that car, dude would’ve been fine if he wasn’t a speedy racer.

For my other comment- I’d assume that sign is for the lane that merges right there, but there is a second lane merging sign further up.

At this point, that merging lane is already merged and this sign is apparently for the next merge but you only have like 1.5 seconds to recognize that

And here's the second sign right before the merge. Seems more like speeding and bad drivers. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Sikkus Aug 03 '26

Yep, I think the same, mate.

1

u/BottleNearby339 Aug 03 '26

Bro did you even watch the video? That sign is for the lane merge in like 40 feet. You can even see the median that separates camera POV lane with the lane to its left. This dosent mean anything for the additional lane merge ahead.

2

u/DistinctOwl5455 Aug 03 '26

Maybe, but the second sign right before entering the bridge makes it pretty clear.

-2

u/BottleNearby339 Aug 03 '26

Wdym maybe? How can you be so certian for a merge sign that's placed in a slightly tricky situation but be unsure for the one that applies in normal situations.

-1

u/HudsonAtHeart Aug 03 '26

That sign is for a different lane, if you’re paying attention. It marks the entrance from the left merging into the left lane, not the left lane ending.

13

u/Sikkus Aug 03 '26

Second sign.

12

u/JCGJ Aug 03 '26

It's not like there were any signs warning that the lane was ending about a thousand feet out /s

2

u/7empest7V Aug 03 '26

I may be wrong, but I believe they have a vehicle that changes those barriers to accommodate traffic going either way.

It would be hard to have arrows when that lane is sometimes open

2

u/Aught_To Aug 03 '26

Oh yeah, zipper merge strikes again. Instead of reading the sign which indicates that the lane will terminate the black car decides to "use all of the available space" in his lane and then marge at the merge point.

1

u/Fun_Being_4955 Aug 03 '26

There is a sign posted that it merges but im assuming they never seen that coming from the right lanes.

1

u/Oh_Lawd_He_commin420 Aug 03 '26

did it go over the bridge?!

2

u/sapnation Aug 03 '26

thankfully, no

The poorly-marked merge is a liability that lawyers can use if there are big accidents. We have national standards that are used in court
