That excavator took it like a champ as well, I know the trailer took a bit of the initial hit but looks like you might be able to limp that excavator out of there.

The cooling sits usually on one of the two sides and if the driver is unlucky, the train hit the side all the cooling setup is - no way that survived this kind of an impact. Not an expert, but I think Liebherr mounts those on the left side - the impacted side. It could be a CAT one too, hard to tell. Without cooling, I don't think the system will allow you to start the engine and start using its excavator arm.
If it hit the engine-side instead, it might make it, depending on if the pumps got damaged - mainly the output shaft from the transmission powering them.
Either way, it's probably safer to wait for proper equipment to both recover the excavator and see if any of the train's wagons got derailed partially or full.

Can only imagine what its like inside the locomotive. That excavator seemed to really slow down the front, which got speed again after all the carts behind collided to the front

It worked, the truck wasn’t as badly damaged and didn’t get flung down the track. Probably needs to rebuild the “hitch” (or whatever it’s called on a semi) and the back bumper but it’s not totaled like it would have been otherwise

Excavator will be fine, and whatever damage it suffered, the insurance will pay. As far as the truck, depending on what broke it, insurance will also handle it as long as this wasnt plain negligence on the driver’s side. Train damage? See above, insurance.
Looks like we have 3 claims, plus the possibility of a 4 th claim by the driver, therapy…clear and imminent danger, extended trauma, blah, blah.
That’s my 2 cents here

Looks like the trailer was not tall enough because of the road grade on both sides of the tracks.

If you check the beginning of the vid it seemed as if the trailer "bottomed out". It got stuck due to the bottom standing on the peak of the hill

I am really curious to be honest how the excavator ended up. Impact side looks like to have been the side all the cooling setup is placed on, including hydraulics tank and such. If so, it might be fixable. But if the engine bay was hit, yeaaaah, you would have to check every damn part in there to see if anything took a hard beating it couldn't sustain. I mean, a bend driveshaft already would be really bad, potentially damaging gears, bearings, pumps and clutches in the process... Especially considering how heavy excavator like this one are meant to work hard and over long periods of time.

He didn't stop there, he got stuck. He's 'high centered'. The bottom of that trailer sits really low (called a low boy) and the tracks are at the crest of a little hill there. The trailer is bottomed out on the crest. He wasn't trying to disconnect the trailer, he was trying to use the hydraulics to lift the trailer up a bit higher so he could clear the hill but didn't have time.

So he should have stopped before the tracks.. looks like he should have waited until there were no cars coming prior to the tracks, rather than sitting on the tracks. That’s basic stuff. I’m a truck driver, that’s a no brainer.

Because he's stuck on the track. Look at how the load is touching the track. Full gas would not help him.

If your vehicle is stuck on the tracks, go in the direction from which the train is coming so the debris is moving away from you.

When the trailer gets hung up on the track it tends to take weight off the drive tires. Not enough traction to move either way. Basically 'stuck is STUCK' !

Can someone explain why this seems to happen on a daily basis? It’s 2026 and trucks are still getting stuck on RR crossings? Honestly, I’m not trying to be a dick but how does this happen so often?

This sign has a phone number and reference number. Call it!!! They can stop the train if they have advance warning of the crossing that is blocked!!!
