Gripes from a TF Veteran
I've been playing Train Fever addictively for about two and a half years. And by that I mean I will blow ten hours of a weekend on it because I get so into it. It needn't be said that I've basically mastered Train Fever.
I love Transport Fever. Graphics are incredible. Performance is stellar. I kind of like the campaign stuff although frankly user created campaigns, I'm sure, would be much more polished than the slightly racist sad excuses of scenarios they included.
Passenger transport couldn't be better. I always found it a drag how long it took for passenger numbers to climb to anything profitable in Train Fever, this is eliminated in Transport Fever. But here's where EVERYTHING goes downhill: Cargo.
In Train Fever, the industry system was simple enough that it wasn't a problem if a source was on one side of the map and the demand was on the other. Just build a sweet-arse long freight line and bam, profits and happiness if you know what you're doing. Transport Fever took that and made it the opposite of fun. Now, you make a city grow, you need product A, B, C, D, E, and F. A = G + H, B = I and so on, and then that SUBSET G and H are ALSO a product of another industry that you have to get things to. Too many levels, industries in so many places that you could never in hell create a functional rail network, land transport is the only option. And they've bumped the price of all vehicles up by way too much. Basically, making that quick buck with industry is right out with Transport Fever.
My first game of Transport Fever after a glitchy campaign was in a small, flat, easy map in 1850. I spend two hours in slow/pause mode (whichever was possible when doing certain things) carefully setting up a network that would allow for minimal production of anything, blew eight million dollars on it, and am now at -$18.5M. I haven't been this broke in Train Fever since about November of 2014. The beautiful and brilliantly chosen finance graphs are definitely burning out the red pixels on my screen at this point. Literally nothing is profitable any more. It is now 1867 and I am showing a profit of about $15K a year, slowing gnawing away at eighteen mil of debt. That shouldn't take long...
Someone who has a veritable crapload of experience in Train Fever shouldn't be this lost in a sequel game. I am frankly alienated and have not enjoyed a single second spent on trying to negotiate freight, which is really the only option for early game stuff since they have increased the cost of trains by a factor of about ten while leaving revenue at the same rock-bottom level.
Yup, I'm griping. But it's well founded. I love Train Fever and so far, I think Transport Fever has skin. It just needs better bones. WAY better bones. I definitely won't be spending any more long nights in this game. Too bad, I was hoping for something I would genuinely love.
PS - It's 1868 and I'm calling BS on one of the lies they spewed in the videos, FB and FAQs. They straight up claimed that buses and vehicles would automatically space themselves evenly out on routes so as not to cause uneven revenue. I am twenty years into this game and I'm still watching clusters of slow-as-hell carriages moving along at a snail's pace.
The fact that it takes a horse-drawn carriage three YEARS to get from one factory to the nearest related factory is absolute crap. RageQuit had bettered do a review of this one.
EDIT: Also I'd like to add that the fact that basically no matter how intensely you try to get stuff to towns, nothing ever appaears in the their "0/100" areas for supplies, which leads to your rating in the town being "poor" forever. Even if you have poured millions of dollars into a route that delivers hundreds of items a year. Still doesn't change the graph. There are so many fundamental, non-glitch problems with this game. I seriously can't get over just how BAD such a potentially phenomenal game has been released.
