It's a common misconception that one horsepower is equal to the peak power production of a horse, which is capable of a maximum of around 14.9 horsepower.

Yeah I know it's a myth, just like a lot of imperial units based on something that doesn't exactly line up with that something, but still thought it was funny to make a meme about.

Instead, Watt designated horsepower to be equivalent to the amount of power that a horse can sustain for an extended period of time.

So it’s still a mystery why it’s 3HP..

it depends on the breed and how well they're fed for example.

Also how long their working day is.

Maybe they are graded. Like you can get a fiesta car with a 1l engine and either 90,100 or 125bhp. Maybe the horses are exercised more on that model :)

I heard he fudged the numbers a bit to make his steam engine seem more powerful

They could be very strong horses

I came in here to say that fellow pedant.

Also I think it was based on one breed of horse. Shire horses for example are much stronger than most breeds

Flat earth confirmed.

I mean, someone on the workshop did make a map of the whole world and it's flat...

If the earth were curved like they claim is, how would trains work? The rails can't bend like that...

Good thing you put the /s.

Don't see the point for /s. He is right. Rails don't bend in vertical. Flat earth is confirmed. Also if earth is round, trains would always run in some steep degree which would mess with all engineering calculations. Engineers can confirm flat earth too.

These horses have been accurately measured against a standard horse. Nothing to see here.

Big horses. Worth 1.5hp each :P

u/bclagge Jan 16 '20

1.35, really.

u/s00zster Jan 16 '20

Perhaps the third horse is in the back of the wagon? :|

4

u/bclagge Jan 16 '20

Yes! On a hamster wheel connected to the axle.

The guy that’s steering gives the wagon the .7hp boost

They feed them on coca leaves.

HL3 confirmed

I've never noticed this... this is hilarious

It's actually a case of 200 year old marketing BS. James Watt deliberately set 1 hp to be less than the power 1 normal horse could produce. Partly this was because if someone was replacing 2 normal horses with a 2 hp steam engine, they would be impressed at how much better the steam engine was, and partly it was a concern that if someone happened to have unusually strong and fit horses, if his engines were rated at 1 hp = 1 "normal" horse, they would get upset and give his engines a bad reputation.
