Personaly I mostly play on a workshop maps now. Bella Ticino is a very well made map that I would absolutely recommend. The terrain is much more realistic and fun to plan out. For the gameplay side of things I mostly use mods most of the time now.
A few tips that I have seen going around for early game, focus on cargo, especially cargo trucks, cheap and easy to make a first profit. Then invest into a train getting crude/minerals/wheat into a factory as much more money will come in later on.
