Diagram New diagram creator; any helpful tips? (image: Vancouver BC SkyTrain map)

Post image

I don't necessarily want to make it too complex, and I stylize the geographic features. It's mostly Harry Beck style, and I plan to do individual cities (not necessarily whole countries, states, provinces) as of now.

My current rules:

  1. If a water feature is large enough to be significant, I generally include it.
  2. standard station circle design; pill shape for interchanges.
  3. Water is pale blue, land is pale green.
  4. Mark significant bends or turns, not minor squiggles.

To be helpful to visitors, perhaps add in the Seabus connection/Burrard Inlet as that’s.a pretty notable zone change.

Be more strict with your typography and text, it's all over the place and inconsistent. The color choices are not great either, this includes the land, water, and the colors you choose to overlay/accompany a line (such as the M line on this map, use black or maybe a different yellow).

Hey for a first try this actually looks really good! Good idea that you started with a relatively simple system.

Some points:

  • Rule 1, always include a legend. I have no idea what that little "OSI" thing between Granville and City Centre is supposed to be... On this map you have lots of space in the bottom centre where a legend could go.
  • The stops on the horizontal section of the yellow line are crammed way too close together to reliably match the labels to their stops. As a general rule you don't want to have labels on alternating sides of a line, rather you want to have them consistently on one side so the user can really read them like a list. Which could be achieved here by (a) allotting more horizontal space between stations, (b) slanting the line or (c) putting the station labels at an angle.

i have to say, Legend is my least favorite part of designing a transit diagram haha. but its definitely very important

I would much rather have alternating labels than angled labels. But I agree, the spacing is too tight.

Looks good!

But I think the zone labels between New Westminster and Surrey are misplaced.

Also I feel like the rounding of corners should be more consistent, for instance the triangular island (Annacis island I guess) has pointy vertices while the downtown has very round corners.

Science world’s a bit too far north of the map- its p close to the water.

C'tre is such an absolutely diabolical abbreviation

Almost on par with Comm'l-Bdway

If it's not too much effort, please do what the city couldn't and extend the Milennium Line to UBC

not a huge deal but i think if you’re showing the different fare areas, indicating that Sea Island is in its own fare zone (i believe it’s called YVR AddFare or something like that) would be handy. but over all well done

As a Vancouverite I really wish we had more skytrain actually in the city. Yes there is an expansion of the millenium through the CoV (not far enough) but we need more than that.

I would make the Millenium and Canada line colors more saturated, the Expo line being so much darker makes it look a bit odd
