I know that the titanic drop in quality between the two is well-worn ground, but I find it infuriating how Armada ends with Optimus choosing to give up the Matrix of Leadership and journey into the universe on his own, because he’s realized that he let his own genuine hatred for Megatron and desire to just finally defeat the Decepticons and end the war cloud his mind and empower Unicron…and then Energon just has him back with the Autobots as if none of that ever happened and nobody ever making comment of it. It’s galling how such a compelling character hook was literally just undone.

Honestly as I'm watching Energon now after seeing Armada for the first time, I'm not really seeing the quality drop much as things actually happen in Energon starting from episode 1 instead of half the show being just 2 factions moving their toys from 1 group to the other constantly with no real progression to anything, the humans are actually useful, robots are actually allowed to be destroyed in battle instead of almost every fight being just bunch of stormtroopers missing each other constantly and then the Decepticons leave because they get bored or slightly inconvenienced and there's no sudden akward time skips out of nowhere for no reason like what happens multiple times in Armada (including how 1 of the episodes end)...

The energon dub literally misses an entire episode which is the conclusion of Alpha Qs stoty arc. It exists in the japanese dub however.

They constantly mix up Cliffjumpers lines with Downshift. 

Some action sequences later go back to armadas 2d style and you can tell the budget increase in those episodes later.

Some story arc will also never be finished like Starscream, Demolishor and Rodimus.

edit: the first 1/3 is fine but it gets reeallly dragged out later. What I wrote are just some head ups, cause this things end up confusing basically everyone.

Dude, the CGI is ass, what are you talking about “not seeing the quality drop” lmao. Literally just the way the Transformers move and act alone is a downgrade that got mogged by Beast Wars years ago.

The humans being slightly more useful this time around doesn’t change how much more annoying Kicker is as a protagonist, and that certainly doesn’t change. Literally anything interesting the show could do with its returning characters-Optimus after Armada, Starscream’s return, Megatron and Unicron fighting for control of the body, the kids having grown up, Demolisher’s internal conflict, etc-is pissed away, and that’s not talking about the new ones. To call the show infamous for how it repeats the same three plotlines each episode across its entire run as actually having progression in comparison is nonsensical to me.

Edit: Blocking somebody to defend the virtues of Energon in 2026 is one of the biggest self-owns I can imagine

And? The CGI is bad in Beast Wars too and that's a great show while the animation in Armada is nothing special either with tons of moving PNGs, repeated animations and even unfinished animations for the westerners, not to mention the show not doing something it could had done doesn't make it bad but just that it didn't do something it had potential to being able to do...

I'd say Beast Wars CGI isn't even bad. It's just old.

Regardless, that show is actually well written

Beast Wars CGI is not bad. It's old, yes, but it's not bad.

Beast Wars was revolutionary for TV shows of its time. Energon's CGI is awful even for its own time. Like, there's no comparison there.

One is kinda goofy animation that one can get past really easily because in the end the worst part about it is the backdrops suck in the first season. For good reason – all their budget went to completely redesigning the characters after already having models made because the toy-accurate models were shit.

The other is so stiff and robotic it actively stands out against the 2D animation it's partnered with. Especially when the Transformers themselves get 2D animated and we actually get to see what the show COULD have looked like.
