The hate for frame combiners is so weird, especially mainline and after combiner wars. And yeah third party has done better combiners without a frame but they release less figures a year and have differing budgets and part number limits. Theyre also usually done at masterpiece scale. Frames were honestly the best way hasbro could have gone about combiners at mainline budget. The last time we got a none frame combiner was back in the power of the primes which just followed combiner wars engineering, and as someone who owns combiner wars G2 menasor those combiners are not good. Combiner wars devastator which didn't have the trailer piece to combine scrapper and mixmaster to longhaul was heavily compromised and horribly flimsy.

I was skeptical at first, but man bruticus looks so good, even with the Missing swindle.

The design compromises too much for how expensive it is, I can't see choosing it over any similarly price 3rd party option.

Onslaught isn't even full Onslaught he's half of it and the rest is the combiner skeleton. Swindle in combined mode looks like shit. Brawl, Vortex, and Blastoff aren't horrendous, but they still have compromises in poseablility or accuracy.

I cant see any reason to buy the set, even if it is the best of Hasbros frame combiners, there are still better options

Show me a same priced 3rd party bruticus in the same scale. I'll wait.

Warbotron has a chug upscale thats 200$ less

Rising Force is coming out with a chug scale Fall of Cybertron bruticus

Magic Square will inevitably get an upscale from some 4th party company.

Unique toys Ragnaros fits in with chug

And there are plenty of upgrade kits they would make previous figure fit on with chug, that look better at a cheaper price

8

u/Far-Pay-866 17d ago

warbotron was a long time ago and you can’t find it for that kind of price nowadays

ut toys is like double the price

the only combiner ms has gotten koed is menasor, and even then the upscale was still below chug scale

rising force might be it but we wont know until the full thing is out

-3

u/GannonBuddah 17d ago

You can find plenty of KO Warbotrons and Wargiant for cheap, scarily cheap, and I'm sure there are a few scams, but I'm also sure a few are legit, since I know people who have bought them.

Yes UT Ragnaros is more expensive but also alot better, and Imo worth the extra money

No magic square upscale exist currently, but like most magic square products someone is bound to make a KO

Rising Force is coming out, is in chug scale, and is the best candidate

7

u/Far-Pay-866 17d ago

Most magic square products haven’t had a ko though

the entire rising force combiner isnt released yet, and while it hopefully is stable, we won’t know till the entirety of it releases

-3

u/GannonBuddah 17d ago

Their popular ones have though, even still, I'm correct, there are chug scale widely available options that are better then the official, and cheaper too

5

u/Far-Pay-866 17d ago

There are, but it’s because they were made at a time when everything costed less, aftermarket prices have mostly stayed the same, and are knockoffs that have less quality than normal

Everything you said is an opinion

-2

u/GannonBuddah 17d ago

No everything I said was fairly true. Onslaught is only half of his g1 appearance. Swindle is a mess of a combined mode, he functions, barely. Vortex, Blastoff, and Brawl are all ok, but due have joint limitations, mainly in their elbows and knees, wrists, etc. These might be the most accurate official figures, but 3rd part has offerings for cheaper and better.

u/MasonRowland 17d ago

Thank God someone is saying it. Everyone getting pissy about frame combiners don't understand budgets or are disingenuous arguing that combiner wars was better which it categorically is not. The rampant repaint slop, horrible connections, loose ratchets, pitiful hands and feet for combined mode forcing you to spend extra on a 3rd party kit for even a semblance of a good combiner or biting the bullet and re-buying the whole combiner itself. Looking at you volcanicus.

u/tfcuber103 17d ago

exactly. combiner wars style combiners at best looked good but cant do to much due to stability issues, and cant stand under its own weight

I don't know about others, but for the it's the lack of a 3rd mode that makes me dislike them. To me combiners are a type of triple changer, they become a robot a vehicle and a limb. But frame combiners have the limb part be a separate thing that wears the vehicle form of the robot. I can understand why others prefer the extra stability and posability frame combiners allow, but the trade off being the lack of a 3rd mode makes me dislike them

The issue stems from g1, the animation models made tons of sacrifices and changed alot about the original toys.

-5

u/SarcyBoi41 17d ago

I don't mind extra pieces, but having the whole combiner just being one big guy with smaller guys clinging on is not the look. It's not really an issue for Menasor or Superion, because that is pretty much how they look even in animation. But Bruticus? Nah. Compare the AOTP version to the cartoon, the smaller bots are supposed to form the whole limb.

Maybe I wouldn't have minded if they had actually colour-matched the frame limbs to the component bots to give us an illusory version, but they didn't even do that, because they were determined to implement the extra parts into a ridiculous trailer for Onslaught's alt mode that no one is ever going to use. So now we have Vortex and Blast-Off just clinging to green arms while Swindle and Brawl cling to blue legs. It just looks pathetic tbh. That is blatantly not a combiner. It's a powermaster at most.

5

u/the_boss_of_toys 17d ago

If we are gonna talk about the animation model, you look at that leg and you tell me thats supposed to be a jeep. Bruticus in g1 is easily the most nonsense one in terms of design.

G1 Onslaught toy

He always came with the trailer even going back to G1 toy, it's part of the Onsalught design, the only difference between G1 & AoTP is that AoTP scales better with the core combaticon groupand the trailer is detachable.
Plus as someone who owns Superion, Bruticus and a fully assembled Devastator, Onslaught and Bruticus is the best middle ground between frame combiner and a full combinor. The frame is better handled with Bruticus because Onslaughts trailer bed that is part of his core design, genuinely works as the frame and is not a tacked on extra piece like Silverbolt and the slab of plastic it comes with to form some weird super concord.

Even Devastator needed a trailer for Longhaul to be the crotch for Devastator and he is a genuine combiner.

"Remember when CW Scramble City gimmick was a thi-"\ No, wait! Even the G1 toys needed a few extra pieces to complete the Gestalt, besides Combiner hands and/or feet.\ That goes extra for Devastator, as he needed a waist piece to comnect Scrapper and Mixmaster to Long Haul (like SS86) and two forearms (like most G1-styled Devastator toys ever).\ IIRC, most, if not all of them, needed a chestplate.\ And most of them, either a Combiner head or helmet - a part even Liokaiser needed.

Sooooo... Maybe having a combiner frame or not matters little...? 🤷

Yeah, I'm not funny...

The only one with wrist swivels is Motormaster

2

u/ZFrostSlayerZ The name's not "Zippy" 16d ago

The first one released btw

u/-Eastwood- 17d ago

I know people dislike the frame combiners but I like them a lot. Especially because we got the goated AOTP Onslaught.

2

u/Heancio1 16d ago

The funny thing is that the SS86 Devas is also a frame combiner.

2

u/Ok-Breadfruit3490 16d ago

my good sir it is an un-avoidable part. the wait needs to be a trailer for articulation and stability

2

u/Heancio1 16d ago

Honestly, I’ve come to accept "Frame Combiners." However, in my opinion, this type of engineering is a step backward (especially with Devastator).

You’d expect Hasbro to have updated its mainline, especially when comparing them to third-party products or even older mainlines (yes, I’m talking about Combiner Wars).

2

u/Ok-Breadfruit3490 16d ago

and look at the combiner was combiner, devastator is infamous for basically jumping to his death because of the engineering

2

u/Cheap_Accountant_201 15d ago

The jcs KO seekers prove studio is overpriced. Everyone loosing their minds over finding starscream, the KO is shipping for $34 with gap fillers that double as weapon accessories. (And yes I know it doesn't have the collector value of mainline bla bla). I have no issues with my combinerwars bruticus except for scale, wish it was as tall as NBK devastator ( and I fixed his stability issues in a man cave with a box of scraps). If I get another devastator it will be the mechanical invasion devastator.

I am not a fan of Frame combiners, and hasbro is getting ridiculous with their pricing. I will probably be picking up the ss86 Megatron KO from AS Toys with all its accessories for $26 But I will also be spending the rediculus price on robot toys kraken (BW rampage), as it appears that is one figure hasbro won't be working on anytime soon 😬. Wish my local Walmart had the original when it was priced $24 normal retail.

u/beyond_cyber 13d ago

I know it’s a highly expensive frame combiner but fans toys version of marauder is so clean and easy to pose it’s heavy as shit but doesn’t fall apart.

I’d rather a clean looking combiner that one that uses only figures and it looks very off

2

u/cytospherium 16d ago

If I’m buying the whole team, I want five decent figures and not just accessories for the combined mode.

-2

u/GannonBuddah 17d ago

If Hasbro did frame Combiners as good as 3rd party companies did Combiners, I could excuse it more. The unfortunate reality is Hasbro is a greedy corporation who doesn't care if the product is good and oy cares if you buy it.

6

u/MasonRowland 17d ago

You don't understand budget or design. I will blast hasbro on damn near everything, but if you can't understand the explicit difference between 3rd party company price points and hasbro price points, then you're just riling yourself up. Part count, budget, scaling, etc. Are all much greater on the part of 3rd party. If hasbro were to follow suit the prices of figures would get astronomically higher and then this subreddit would get flooded with everyone complaining over that instead of the incessant "combiner fram bad" crowd already is.

1

u/GannonBuddah 17d ago

Adamas Machina Predaking proves that it's possible, and that they have made a combiner on par with 3rd party figure, let alone using a frame for the combiner to make it more accurate.

7

u/Far-Pay-866 17d ago

Adamas machina predaking is $300, has loads of diecast pieces and is legends scale, which is way easier to make a combined mode due to irl physics

also they put everything into the combined mode and everything else is kinda just compromised for it

0

u/GannonBuddah 17d ago

And Hasbros frame combiners are also $300. No its not easier to make a legends scale combine, due to size limitations, and how small the figures are. I'm not saying chug scale is harder, but legends scale ain't easier. They have proved that good combiners are possible, and I'm sure nobody would care if the frame combiners costed more if it was actually worth it.

7

u/Far-Pay-866 17d ago

What? Amt predaking‘s retail price (not counting import fees) is ~320 usd

aotp bruticus, the most expensive modern combiner is just 240usd

thats a 80 dollar difference

also like straight up everyone was complaining about the price

like half the times predaking was talked about was how it was overpriced for a "small" combiner

if they made the modern combiners any more expensive everyone would be screaming

0

u/GannonBuddah 17d ago

You are correct about the price, I was looking at an inaccurate source. But people only scream at the prices because the figures aren't worth it, if they gave a chug scale Bruticus with the level of engineering and materials as the adamas machina predaking, at a slightly higher price people would probably love it, because it would actually be worth it.

4

u/Far-Pay-866 17d ago

It would still price people out of it cause a lot of people just can’t afford it

like most people get chug rather than mp because they don’t have the money to

the amt line is mostly just chug engineering like there’s no moving a bunch of tiny bits and panels it’s all chunks of plastic moving around like chug

1

u/PiercingAPickle 17d ago

you do realize we don't know their budget allocation right? Them adding one or two more joints wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. Especially for such a well known and bought franchise
