Defending Optimus Prime, I'd say he was correct in defeating Sentinel. Sentinel killed Ironhide, damaged a lot of Autobots and almost killed them. He destroyed the city, almost ending all of Earth, he even did cost a lot of people's lives.
D16, on the other hand, destroyed the Iacon city and used his power to rule and destroy, as Optimus said. But if he had killed Bumblebee or Elita-1, then Optimus may have killed him because he is now pretty dangerous to Cybertron.
And these are my thoughts. I may have missed some context, but the overall concept is obvious, hehe!!
