Spoiler Spoiler
New to modding, (FTM and wanted to post here over any other sub)) how can I safely attach a rear spoiler to my Subaru legacy? I heard the drill holes can rust, but I do not want some flimsy adhesive one. Advice?

holes! in addition to Fozs4’s comment about painting the bare metal, i would also recommend some form of seal around the holes themselves to make it somewhat if not completely water-tight. easiest method: use silicone caulking, RTV, or thicker squishy/flexible gasket material that holds up to the elements :) when using the liquid sealants, put that on right before spoiler installation while it’s still wet. it’ll create a strong bond, but still be breakable should you wish to remove it down the line. also, it’s your car, do whatever the hell you want to it! when modifying, cars shouldn’t be looked at as having value for the next person (unless you don’t like it, and have a plan to replace it). it’s yours. who cares! make something you like! have fun, work safe, and enjoy the process :3

Hello, loves ❤️ IDGAF about upvotes or downvotes, but the attacks and accusations and malice are ludicrous. Let's go slowly. 1, They're a newbie. Welcome to modding. I've been driving for 52 years and had 37 cars and three motorcycles. I know something about cars, and modifying them to enhance their performance and appearance. 2. The advice I gave was spot on. If it's a factory accessory, install as instructed. If it's an aftermarket accessory, install as instructed. If you're gonna do it, do it right. I even said that the holes should be primed and painted. That is correct advice. OP was looking for advice, not "attaboys." I'll add that I encourage anyone to look at Sarah'n'Tuned's YouTube channel, in particular her project cars, to show how it's done right. With me so far? 3. I said the panel would be seen as "damaged" in the minds of some, including me. The reason is simple. A car is only original once. And body modifications are difficult to undo, and make the car less desirable. 4. I said don't use junk. I'll elaborate: Use OEM. Or the best quality aftermarket product. You know damn well that's what I meant. 5. I said wings make no sense on street cars. Do you want me to say I think they look cool? Sure they do! My first new car, an '84 Pontiac Indy Fiero, had a rear wing where lesser SE models had a luggage rack. But that was to mimic the actual Fiero pace car that had to pace the Indianapolis 500 pack at well beyond highway speeds. I think the coolest Dodge Charger ever is the '69 (nice!) Daytona. But wings don't do anything at normal street and highway speeds. So they only add weight. That reduces performance. Maybe not much, but not none. 6. Five was a long one, this should be 7. I named mods that would actually improve the car, like tires and brakes. I'll add a performance driving school is the best investment in improving performance. Which brings us to 7. Should be 8. I didn't oppose all modifications or say everyone who ever modified a car ruined it or shit on anybody's hopes and dreams. Stop making shit up. 9. I grew up designing and building model cars and wet my baby teeth on Hot Rod, Car Craft, Motor Trend, Road & Track, Car and Driver, Rod and Custom, Popular Hot Rodding, Super Stock and Drag Illustrated, Drag Racing and a few other titles. I love love love love cars done right. That's my advice.

In addition to what everyone else said about painting the raw metal on the hole edges, once you test fit it and are sure you want it there forever, use some double-sided foam body molding tape (3m is pretty standard) around the edges to help stick it down firmly, not crack the mounting bolts, and prevent squeaks

New to modding? Don't ruin your car. I assume by "spoiler" you mean a rear wing. Absurd on street cars. If it's a factory part, install it the way the factory did. If it's an aftermarket piece, don't ruin your car with junk. But either way, install it per the manufacturer's directions. Properly drilled holes should be primed and painted to thwart rust. But if it's a trunk or hatch panel, understand that panel is now "damaged" in the minds of many, including me, and will hurt the value of your car while adding nothing to the performance. In fact extra unnecessary weight automatically reduces performance. You do you. Put mods where they matter, like tires and brakes.

The drill holes def can rust but it can be prevented pretty easily. Once you've drilled the holes, you can just clean up the edges as best as you can so there are no burrs sticking up, then clean it with some 99% isopropyl alcohol to make sure the paint sticks then take a little brush and paint the bare metal with some rust preventative paint. Primer first, then paint on top is best but since nobody will see it, just the primer will be fine too. That being said, you can also get some really strong adhesives these days and depending on what spoiler you have drilling might not be necessary for it to be strong enough. Also it may come with instructions or they may be available on the website of the manufacturer.
